Geelong superstar Patrick Dangerfield is free to play in the Easter Monday blockbuster against Hawthorn after copping a fine for his off-the-ball frustrations on Saturday.

One of the Brownlow Medal favourites, Dangerfield was last night hit with a $2000 fine for lashing out at tagger Matt De Boer with an elbow to his midriff behind play.

But Carlton has been dealt a blow with onballer Will Setterfield copping a two-match ban for dumping Gold Coast’s Will Powell into the turf in a dangerous tackle.

North Melbourne defender Luke McDonald could also be missing from North’s Good Friday clash against Essendon after he was dealt a one-match ban for striking Crow Chayce Jones.

McDonald was attempting to spoil when he collected Jones high in the marking contest.

Defender Sam Wright could replace McDonald ahead of a massive assignment against Bombers’ seven-goal star Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti on Friday.

Clubs have until 11am to decide whether to appeal.

Setterfield’s suspension is a disappointment for the Blues as they look to break their drought against Western Bulldogs on Sunday followed by a trip to Launceston to take on the Hawks.

Dangerfield was standing in front of the tight-checking De Boer when he used his left arm to strike De Boer’s stomach.

It was graded as intentional conduct and low impact.

But Dangerfield can count himself lucky his second arm-swing narrowly missed De Boer’s head, as the Giant buckled over in pain from the first strike.

Match review officer Michael Christian yesterday defended the tribunal process after his two most recent big verdicts on Mason Cox and Dustin Martin were successfully challenged.

Christiain said there was not enough force behind Dangerfield’s second striking motion to warrant a sanction.

“Matt De Boer had hold of Patrick and he flung back with his arm and it was minimal contact,” Christian said.

“We certainly determined that it was insufficient force to constitute a reportable offence.”

Setterfield’s rough tackle on Powell was assessed as careless conduct with high impact to the head. Powell’s head was slammed into the turf in the incident, concussing the young Sun. He didn’t return to the field.

“If you drive, sling, or rotate with excessive force into the ground, it becomes unreasonable in the circumstances,” Christian said.

“In this case it was a slinging action and added to that Will Powell was in a vulnerable position because Will Setterfield had hold of his right arm.”

Christian said the recent tribunal decisions on Cox and Martin should not undermine the public’s faith in the MRO system.

He said the match review operations did not have access to witnesses and other evidence that was available to the tribunal, leading to potentially different interpretations of incidents.

“I see it as the process working, the match review function is separate to the tribunal function,” Christian said.

“We won’t shy away from applying the guidelines as best as we can.”

Brisbane forward Eric Hipwood escaped sanction for accidentally kicking David Myers in the face in a marking contest.

Could Riewoldt make shock return?

Richmond could have three of its big four stars back by Anzac Eve but Jack Riewoldt seems unlikely to be risked against Sydney on Saturday night.

The Tigers not only escaped from Adelaide Oval with a critical win over Port Adelaide, they unearthed another exciting young midfielder in Jack Ross.

Ross won 25 possessions, with coach Damien Hardwick hailing his poise and delivery despite being spruiked pre-season as a tough inside midfielder.

Shai Bolton played his first game of the season and Sydney Stack’s remarkable start to his career continued with Hardwick hailing his influence despite only 11 possessions.

The Tigers take on the 1-3 Sydney at Marvel Stadium on Saturday night with Dustin Martin returning but aware they have only a four-day break until Anzac Eve.

Riewoldt told Fox Footy yesterday he hasn’t been ruled out of Saturday night as he recovers from a medial strain and a wrist injury.

But he suggested he and captain Trent Cotchin were more likely to take on the Demons on Wednesday week.

“For me it will just be continually ticking things off. Obviously I want to play and wanted to play against Port Adelaide this week but the four-day break does make it tough.

“Cotch might be in the same boat pushing for the Melbourne game. No risks will be taken.

“If it was me I would be playing but the medical and coaching staff will make the final call.”

Bachar Houli will also likely return against Sydney after telling the coaching staff he wasn’t 100 per cent ready for the Port Adelaide contest with a hamstring strain.

Saints, Seb not getting carried away

Al Paton

St Kilda remains a long way from lifting its sights from the cliche of one game at a time.

Sunday’s upset win against Hawthorn gave the Saints three wins from their opening month, in a season in which they were tipped to flounder in the bottom four. But acting captain Seb Ross said it remains far too early to reassess and look any further ahead than the Easter Saturday clash with Melbourne.

“I don’t think we’re in a position to look ahead at all,” he said. “We’re pretty fortunate we have a six-day break, so we can bank that win and look forward to playing Melbourne.”

Ross stepped in as captain yesterday when Jarryn Geary was a late withdrawal because of illness and he was best afield with 39 possessions.

The Saints fell four goals behind in the third quarter and a year ago the Hawks would have swamped them. But St Kilda’s effort never wilted and Hawthorn did not kick another goal.

Ross attributes the impressive opening month to several factors, including the arrival of new assistant coaches Brett Ratten and Brendon Lade.

“We were able to get some real clarity within our pre-season with a few new coaches coming in,” he said.

“We put some game plans in and some things we wanted to put in place.

“As long as we bring the effort, those sorts of things seem to be working for us.”

Post-match, coach Alan Richardson pointed to the Saints' improved fitness.

“That’s helped massively; the guys who are usually at the top of the running drills, they’re still at the top,” Ross said.

“But we got a more significant improvement from the guys underneath. The range in our 3km time-trials was a lot closer – we had a lot more guys running 10-11 minutes.”
