ADELAIDE will have its own Brownlow function at Adelaide Oval rather than have its players have their preparations hampered by travel in the week leading up to the club’s first grand final in 19 years.
The club will still be represented by club officials at the game’s biggest individual award in Melbourne tomorrow night but the players will have a low-key function and contribute to the night through live crosses rather than attending in person.
Traditionally, each club’s captain and players who are expected to poll well are invited to the event and make a big night of it if the club does not feature in the grand final.
“We’ll hold an event here so it’s obviously a small event,” club chief executive Andrew Fagan said. “A few of the players will obviously represent the club and there will be a cross into the event.
“And there will be a few of us who will represent the club at the event in Melbourne.”
The club is expected to swept up in grand final fever by Wednesday when it will hold an open training session which is expected to be attended by hundreds, if not thousands of fans.
It has also booked in a family day for Sunday which it hopes will mark the club’s first premiership since 1998.
“We’ll be back here for our open session and expect to get a lot of support for the footy club,” Fagan said. “Then we’ll be back here on Sunday to send the guys off and celebrate what has been a great season.
“Fingers crossed we’ve got something extra special to celebrate.”
Fagan could not speak more highly of the club’s win against Geelong – a match which was dominated from the first goal and one in which the Crows kept the lead throughout the game.
“I’m really proud of the guys; they prepared really well over the two weeks and I’m just proud they could go out there and execute it as well as they did.
“It’s obviously been a tremendous journey and I’m really proud to get us back to the MCG on the last Saturday in September.
“But that’s the start. We’ve now given ourselves the opportunity and now we look to do what we can do with it.’’
