Adelaide Crows lock on Charlie Cameron could open with Bryce Gibbs homecoming trade from Carlton

BRYCE Gibbs remains in the frame for a go-home trade from Carlton to Adelaide - and the key to releasing contracted Crows speedster Charlie Cameron to Brisbane.

BRYCE Gibbs remains in the frame for a go-home trade from Carlton to Adelaide - and the key to releasing contracted Crows speedster Charlie Cameron to Brisbane.

The AFL trade period closes at 1.30pm tomorrow with the contracted Gibbs remaining linked to the Crows despite the strong denials from Adelaide that it has revisited this option - and the equally strong stand from Carlton that it will not trade the South Australian.

Gibbs is on the list of prospective major deals to headline the final two sessions of the 11-day trade period along with Jake Stringer (Western Bulldogs to Essendon), Brownlow Medallist Gary Ablett (Gold Coast to Geelong) and Josh Schache (Brisbane to a Victorian-based club).

Gibbs, 28, was the headline non-trade last October when Adelaide refused to meet Carlton’s trade demands - two first-round draft picks - during an uneasy relationship between strong-willed list managers Justin Reid (Adelaide) and Stephen Silvagni (Carlton).

But if Carlton coach Brendon Bolton agrees to release Gibbs from the last two years of his current five-season deal, there is the chance for Adelaide and the Blues to work together for a win-win trade.

Adelaide - that has draft picks Nos. 10 and 16 and possibly 18 to score from Brisbane for Cameron - can help Carlton close a deal for Greater Western Sydney midfielder Matthew Kennedy.

Carlton can help the Crows overcome the loss of 73-game Cameron - and gain insurance from Gibbs should Adelaide vice-captain Rory Sloane take up free agency at the end of next season.

Adelaide remains adamant it will hold Cameron to his contract at West Lakes next year unless a replacement player emerges from the trade period for the 23-year-old pacy midfielder-forward.

Cameron’s management continues to insist the Crows have more to gain in trading Cameron now rather than carrying an unsettled player on their list next year.

Andrew McDougall from the Colin Young management team described Brisbane’s willingness to hand draft pick No. 18 to Adelaide as “a fantastic offer”.

“It is more than fair and reasonable for a player who came off the rookie list,” said McDougall.

The key question that might be answered today is which club, Carlton or Adelaide, or which manager moves first to set off the dominoes with Gibbs, Cameron and Kennedy.

Brisbane football chief - and former Crows football boss - David Noble yesterday morning described the Lions as “hopeful” of scoring Cameron in a trade.

There were just two trades yesterday - Jack Watts from Melbourne to Port Adelaide and Brendon Ah Chee from the Power to West Coast - in a day that was mis-labelled as “Super Tuesday”.
