Adelaide has come down hard on small forward Tyson Stengle, handing him a four-match ban for his drink driving offence.

The 21-year-old has also been slapped with a $2500 fine, with the money to be donated to charity.

He also will be forced to undertake a road safety education program.

Former Tiger Stengle, in his second year at Adelaide, was stopped by police for driving an unregistered vehicle in Adelaide’s southwestern suburbs in the early hours of April 9.

He subsequently recorded a blood alcohol reading of 0.125.

Crows Head of Football Adam Kelly said the club-imposed sanction reflected the serious nature of the indiscretion and reiterated Stengle had clearly breached the club’s standards and those of the broader community.

“Tyson continues to show remorse for his actions and these sanctions are an expression of our disappointment,” Kelly said.

“It is crucial that he receives appropriate education on the significant risks and danger of driving while under the influence of alcohol, and road safety more broadly.

“We are thankful that no-one was hurt and the club will continue to provide Tyson with the necessary support to ensure he can push through this difficult period.”

The sanction was determined by the club’s senior management.

Chief executive Andrew Fagan said Stengle had paid a heavier price because he delayed reporting his indiscretion.

“We probably strengthened the sanction on this occasion because Tyson was slow in revealing information to us and that it is contrary to the standards that we set as a footy club,’’ Fagan told SEN.

“He knows that it was a significant mistake that he’s made and he’s extremely remorseful.

“He regrets his actions and I know he’s going to work hard to get the trust of his teammates back and get back onto the field and playing as soon as he possibly can.’’

Fagan described Stengle’s actions in driving an unregistered car as “a genuine oversight’’.

“He had changed management groups and thought that someone else had taken care of that for him,’’ Fagan said.

“As for the drinking, I don’t think there’s often a great excuse or reason that, it was a genuine mistake, an error in judgment, and he’s owned that.

“It took him a while to come forward, which was disappointing, and he recognises that’s not the way that he is supposed to operate.’’

In a statement, the Crows said Stengle was regretful and disappointed in his actions.

“I know that I have let a lot of people down and I want to apologise for what were some poor decisions,” Stengle said.

“I am determined to win back the trust of my teammates and coaches and that starts with focusing on my training and working hard.”

Fagan defended the club’s decision to wait a week to publicly disclose the incident.

“It took us a few days to be notified and then we wanted to sit with Tyson to make sure he was okay and then we had to investigate the incident properly,’’ he said.

“We also had a scheduled meeting with the playing group on Friday morning and thought it was important for Tyson to be able to front up in front of the team and explain what he had done, it was an important step to regain the trust of his teammates.

“I think the fact we took four or five days after being notified of the incident (to announce it publicly) isn’t a significant issue at all.’’
