IF YOU needed any more evidence of how the face of AFL has changed in the past decade, here it is.

Tayla Harris found this photo when looking through old pictures from her primary school days this week.

It’s a pretty standard snapshot of a starstruck young fan with her AFL hero, in this case Brisbane’s triple premiership captain Michael Voss. Except back then Tayla had no idea she would one day have the opportunity to put on a Lions jumper herself and take the field.

Harris is one of the stars of the new AFLW league, which passed another major milestone last night when several teams outside Victoria hit the training track for the first time.

Tonight they will be joined by Collingwood, Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs, with Carlton’s team hitting the track tomorrow at Ikon Park.

The numbers back up the changing face of footy — total female participation soared by 19 per cent in the past 12 months and women now account for 27 per cent of all footballers.
