Sydney, Dan Hannebery set to explore trade options in off-season

SYDNEY is happy to consider Dan Hannebery’s trade request, which would jettison his $2.4 million wage bill and give them room to chase Collingwood swingman Darcy Moore.

SYDNEY is happy to consider Dan Hannebery’s trade request, which would jettison his $2.4 million wage bill and give them room to chase Darcy Moore.

Hannebery’s camp said on Tuesday night he had not outright demanded a trade, but in Tuesday’s exit meeting both parties had been open to exploring a potential deal.

The Sydney vice-captain’s links to St Kilda, first revealed in the Herald Sun, come despite three seasons on a deal worth $800,000 a season.

Hannebery was able to kick only one goal this year and averaged 18 modest possessions, but believes with a full pre-season he could rediscover his All-Australian form.

The Saints have offered a four-year deal at $800,000 a season but it is understood they have ruled out using their top-five draft pick to secure him.

Former senior coach Terry Wallace said it was “trading incompetency” for St Kilda to chase Hannebery given he was 28 and “banged up”.

Pacy Sydney flanker Gary Rohan is also weighing up a return to Victoria where he and his wife can be closer to their parents.

Geelong is yet to full commit to a trade for Rohan, contracted to 2020, but he did not finish the season in the Sydney senior side.

Rohan will meet with the club in coming days to clarify his future after a tough year where Amie gave birth to children Bella and Willow, aware Willow would pass away with a fatal defect.

Sydney still needs to pay some of Kurt Tippett’s salary next year and must commit enough cash to secure Jake Lloyd, who Gold Coast is no longer pursuing.

But with coach John Longmire open about the need to support Lance Franklin in the final four years of his deal Collingwood’s Moore might be the perfect foil.

Franklin turns 32 in January and in recent finals has felt the strain of a punishing home-and-away season workload and often finished the season sore.

Moore is only 22 and despite his manager Liam Pickering consistently saying Collingwood is in the box seat he has not committee to a deal offered by the club in January.

If he could find some durability a player who kicked 24 goals in his second season and 25 the following year would be the perfect lead-up forward while Franklin played deep.
