Why North Melbourne recruit Aiden Bonar shapes as a KFC SuperCoach ‘no-brainer’

He managed just six AFL games across his first two seasons. But North Melbourne recruit Aiden Bonar is shaping as a SuperCoach steal in 2020 as greater opportunity beckons. Just ask Rhyce Shaw.

He managed just six AFL games across his first two seasons, but don’t be surprised if Aiden Bonar doubles that tally by Round 6 this year.

The North Melbourne recruit has produced an eye-catching summer on the track and shapes as a potential KFC SuperCoach steal in 2020.

He will start this season aged 21 but with a SuperCoach price tag of only $202,800 – the same as raw 2019 No.2 draft pick Noah Anderson.

Selected at Pick 11 in the 2017 national draft, Bonar was once considered the “best 15-year-old in the country” before having consecutive knee reconstructions.

But his body was a not problem in two years with Greater Western Sydney.

Instead, Bonar suffered primarily from a lack of opportunity in an already stacked and more experienced Giants midfield.

The move to the Kangaroos is bound to bring far more opportunity, though, with glowing reviews coming out of Arden St over summer.

“Bon’s been going really well,” North Melbourne coach Rhyce Shaw said last week.

“I’ve been really impressed with his attitude since he’s come down from GWS and I’m really looking forward to seeing what he can do.

“He’s a really exciting talent and I can see the reason he was picked up No.11. He’s super exciting, super powerful and hopefully plays a big part in our midfield this year.”

Kangaroos captain Jack Ziebell recently sung similar praises of Bonar.

“He’s very big and powerful and I’d like to see him in our midfield pretty early on to see if he can add a few more dimensions in there, and just give a bit more flexibility and depth as well,” Ziebell said.

“I think we all saw in a few of the games he played over the last couple of years that he’s got the ability to go forward and take a mark and kick a goal. It’s an exciting prospect for our fans, and for us as players as well.”

But with a Beak Even score of just 37 and available as a midfielder or in the forward line, Bonar appears a SuperCoach no-brainer if he is selected in Round 1.
