Which players will become SuperCoach guns after switching clubs in 2018?

A SECOND chance at a new club usually means more opportunities — and potential SuperCoach value. Which players will make the most of their career lifeline?

Serious business!

SOME are comeback kids. Others are probably on their last chance.

In last year’s AFL national and rookie draft, players such as Lindsay Thomas, Billy Hartung, Jarrod Garlett and Dylan Buckley were granted second chances at the elite level.

NEXT BIG THING: WHO WILL BE THE 2018 VERSION OF CLAYTON OLIVER?

Others including Jackson Trengove, Steven Motlop, Tom Rockliff and Aaron Mullett used free agency to join new clubs.

Each arrives at their second home hoping to achieve more senior opportunities, a factor which could make them more relevant when selecting your SuperCoach side.

Which raises the question, which of those players docking at a new club and eyeing greater opportunities should be on your radar?

NICK HOLMAN (GOLD COAST) $102,400 MID

Priced at just $102,400, the former Carlton defender should be a popular bench selection in midfield after being snapped up by the Suns in the rookie draft. His SuperCoach numbers with the Blues were modest, posting 19 in his only match in 2014 and averaging 40.6 from eight matches in 2015. Holman was crowned Central Districts best-and-fairest after a standout 2017 SANFL campaign and promptly declared he was determined to make the most of his second chance. His pressure was a feature of his game last season and had eight tackles on the way to 84 points in Gold Coast’s first JLT Series game against Geelong.

AARON MULLETT (CARLTON) $440,700 DEF

Mullett was cut by North Melbourne despite playing 18 games last year and finishing the campaign with a career-best SuperCoach average of 80. From Round 15 onwards, the small defender scored less than 70 once and tallied consecutive triple-figure totals in Rounds 16 and 17. With Sam Docherty on the sidelines for 2018, expect Mullett to be an important member of Carlton’s back six after his move from Arden St. At $440,700 he will be out of reach for most but is a player worth consideration.

JARROD GARLETT (CARLTON) $117,300 FWD/MID

The last selection in the 2017 national draft, Garlett is back in the AFL after featuring in 17 games for Gold Coast. Garlett returned to Western Australia last season and played in the WAFL for South Fremantle. His SuperCoach numbers during his time at the Suns don’t demand selection, averaging 45.5. However, his price and fwd-mid status appeal. Garlett looms as a regular fixture in Carlton’s team and should be a lock to fill one of the positions on your forward or midfield bench.

TRENT McKENZIE (PORT ADELAID) $347,800 DEF

“The Cannon” has roped a few SuperCoaches in before. At his best, in 2013 and 2014, he posted averages of 88.6 and 80.3 and earmarked himself as a reliable scorer in defence. However, he has failed to hit those heights since and found himself on the outer despite Gold Coast’s struggles last year. McKenzie is the perfect example of a risk-reward selection. In Round 22 last year, the superboot amassed 132 Supercoach points after scores of 47, 65 and 60 the previous three weeks. He scored 65 points from just 51 per cent game time against Adelaide on Saturday and there could be an opening in Port’s Round 1 line-up with an injury to Jasper Pittard. He is awkwardly priced at $347,800 and will need to be your fourth or fifth defender if you are considering giving him another chance.

TOM ROCKLIFF (PORT ADELAIDE) $529,400 MID

The Power snared Rockliff in one of the biggest moves of the off-season via free agency and the widely-held expectation is the former Brisbane Lions captain will be used in a midfield-forward role rotating with Robbie Gray. The number of midfield minutes he is deployed for by Ken Hinkley for will be the determining factor in whether he is worth his $529,400 price tag.

For a player capable of elite numbers, Rockliff offers potential value. Patrick Dangerfield will set you back $220,400 more and players such as Brendon Goddard, Sam Menegola and Brad Ebert are more expensive than the ball magnet. He has missed both JLT games with knee soreness but Hinkley has declared him fit for Round 1, but he has had injury issues in the past — the most matches he has played has been 21.

DOM BARRY (PORT ADELAIDE) $117,300 MID

Another product of Port’s aggressive recruiting at the end of last season, Barry was given an AFL lifeline after averaging 89 points per game in the SANFL last year. His SuperCoach numbers in his first AFL stint with Melbourne in 2014 don’t make inspiring reading (five matches, average 31) but he has put in a solid pre-season and shapes as an excellent bench choice. We just need Hinkley to pick him for Round 1.

Others worth consideration

Cam O’Shea (Carlton), Matt Shaw (Carlton), Lachie Keefe (GWS), Alex Morgan (North Melbourne), Jack Watts (Port Adelaide).

Give them a miss

Billy Hartung (North Melbourne), Billy Gowers (Western Bulldogs), Dylan Buckley (GWS), Jack Trengove (Port Adelaide), Steven Motlop (Port Adelaide), Jackson Trengove (Western Bulldogs), Lindsay Thomas (Port Adelaide).
