The Phantom’s Trade Talk: Cash cow Willem Drew is again likely to help fill the void left by the injured Ollie Wines on the inside

While the third-year midfielder has only scored 62 and 69 in the past two weeks, his role in the Power side has been a vastly different one since Wines returned from a shoulder injury in Round 3.

In the first two weeks of the season, Drew, playing a full-time inside-midfield role, attended 29 centre bounces – the second-most at the club – and recorded scores of 103 and 90.

The following round against the Lions at the GABBA, Wines was back and Drew was pushed forward as Ken Hinkley reinstated his midfield bull at the coal-face.

It resulted in a disappointing 9-disposal, 36-point effort.

Drew wasn’t much better the following week against the Tigers but he bounced back with 20 disposals and 105 points against the Eagles in Round 5.

With that score dropping out of his three-round rolling average and a Round 8 breakeven of 58, SuperCoaches were getting ready to cash-in on a $198k profit and trade the 20-year-old out.

But there’s still money to be made.

Speaking on The Lowdown Podcast, Tom Jonas declared defender Matthew Broadbent and forwards Kane Farrell and Aidyn Johnson will play in Saturday night’s Showdown, meaning Drew, again, set to fill the void left by Wines in the midfield

Given what he showed earlier in the year, he’s an on-field rookie we can be sure about again.

While it’s unlikely to be this week, the Wines injury could also give an opportunity to another strong-bodied midfielder, Joe Atley, who has averaged 26 disposals and seven clearances in the SANFL after recovering from a pre-season hamstring injury.

But for now, though, it’s all about Drew.

And Tom Rockliff, who should - and must - lift after a disappointing display against the Magpies. The former Lion posted scores of 138 and 116 without Wines in the side to begin 2019.

If you were planning to trade Drew, include fellow forward-line cash cows Jack Petruccelle or Matthew Parker in your trades instead.
