How to play SuperCoach

Week 2 of the JLT Series has given SuperCoaches plenty to ponder. The Advertiser’s fantasy footy guru The Phantom looks at 10 standout performers from the forwardline.

Dan Houston (Port) $117,300

While a few of his more experienced teammates made errors against the Tigers, the rookie-listed Houston had 10 disposals at 100 per cent efficiency. The 19-year-old, who finished with 60 SuperCoach points, may still be a long shot for round one but, if he can win promotion to the senior list, he’s one to keep an eye on for later in the year.

Dan Butler (Rich) $123,900

The speedy small forward is pushing hard for a debut after an impressive first-up display in the JLT Series. The 20-year-old, who is in his third season on the Richmond list, finished with 17 disposals, seven scores involvements, a goal and 75 points.

Christian Petracca (Melb) $395,600

After injury ruined his debut season in 2015, Petracca showed glimpses of his enormous talent in 17 games last year. But, with a full pre-season under his belt, this could be the year the No.2 draft pick from 2014 really takes off. The powerful midfielder-forward, who was a prolific SuperCoach scorer at junior level, dominated against the Blues, tallying 19 disposals, 10 contested possessions, four goals and 136 points.

Jesse Hogan (Melb) $417,600

The young star forward has posted some big SuperCoach scores in his first two seasons at senior level but they just haven’t come consistently enough for Hogan to be considered a genuine SuperCoach option. But as Melbourne improve, the time will come. And, with 15 disposals, five marks, three goals and 127 points against the Blues, following on from his four goals in week one, is that time now?

Josh Kennedy (WC) $532,200

The Coleman Medallist needs big bags of goals to score well and, fortunately enough, they are a regular occurrence. And his first game of the JLT Series was no different. Kennedy posted 139 points on the back of 15 disposals, eight marks and five goals. While he will have Sam Mitchell putting it on his chest in 2017, five scores of less than 65 last season is still a concern.

Nathan Hrovat (NM) $301,400

The former Bulldog has been on fire all summer and that continued against the Hawks with the clean and skilful 22-year-old impressing with 18 disposals, two goals and 84 points. A great selection if you can fit him in.

Jarryd Roughead (Haw) $367,100

He could’ve had one kick in his return and we would’ve been happy but he had 16 of them and wasted little time in finding form. Roughead, who ventured all over the ground, finished with 23 disposal and 95 points and could find his way into a lot more teams with a similar performance against the Power on Sunday week.

Jack Gunston (Haw) $502,300

The athletic forward is looming as an intriguing point-of-difference in the forward line after a 92-point performance against the Kangaroos saw him spend significant time on a wing. And it could’ve been a three-figure score if it wasn’t for three behinds.

Ben Ainsworth (GC) $198,300

The dangerous small forward is almost a certainty for round one after a standout performance in week two of the JLT Series. While the No. 4 draft pick didn’t have a huge impact in his first outing as a Sun in week one, Ainsworth showcase his potential against the Bombers with 13 disposals — at 92 per cent efficiency — seven contested possessions, two goals, one goal assist and 92 points.

Josh Begley (Ess) $117,300

There hasn’t been a lot of talk about the Bomber’s No. 31 pick within the SuperCoach community but, after four goals and 79 points the Suns, that is about to change. The 187cm, 93kg forward showed he is ready to make the step up to senior footy straight away.
