The most selected players in KFC SuperCoach 2020

If you need a guide on who to pick in KFC SuperCoach this year, let the people decide. Two Tigers are in the top four most selected players, but there are some big surprises in the top 30 – and some big names missing.

Footy’s best fairytale story is about to add a new chapter.

Richmond’s Grand Final hero Marlion Pickett is the most popular player in KFC SuperCoach less than a week from the first lockout of the season.

Remarkably, Thursday night’s season-opener against Carlton will be Pickett’s second AFL game after his stunning debut in the Grand Final.

In a godsend for fantasy players, that score doesn’t factor into his KFC SuperCoach price so he is available at the bargain price of $123,900.

That explains why he features in 71 per cent of KFC SuperCoach teams, a clear No. 1 in the popularity stakes ahead of No. 1 draft pick Matt Rowell (66 per cent), last year’s topscorer Brodie Grundy (64 per cent) and Tigers teammate Dustin Martin (60 per cent).

Marlion Pickett is in almost three-quarters of SuperCoach teams.

If the list of most popular players is any guide, prepare for a frantic final week of KFC SuperCoach pre-season.

For many teams, selections will come down to final hours before the ball is bounced when we will find out which players are selected in their Round 1 sides.

A lot of SuperCoach players are banking on Sydney’s Will Gould (51 per cent of teams), Gold Coast’s Izak Rankine (46 per cent), Brisbane’s Deven Robertson (32 per cent) and Adelaide’s Ned McHenry (29 per cent) being on the team sheets on Thursday night.

Most coaches seem to be adopting the Dusty-Lachie Whitfield one-two punch in the forward line but they are less sure about the ruck, with Collingwood back-up Darcy Cameron the second-most popular big man behind Grundy.

And they are split on Tom Mitchell, who features in 20 per cent of teams as he prepares to return from a year out with a broken leg. The last time he played a full season, he averaged 129 points a game.

Proven KFC SuperCoach guns Patrick Dangerfield (20 per cent), Rory Laird (20 per cent), Stephen Coniglio (19 per cent) and James Sicily (19 per cent) just miss the top 30.

If you really want to break from the herd, Ben Cunnington, Travis Boak, Josh P Kennedy, Jack Billings, Steele Sidebottom and Trent Cotchin are in 1 per cent of teams or fewer.

Point of difference, anyone?
