Don't miss out on the headlines from Supercoach. Followed categories will be added to My News.
AFTER pledging a cautious approach this week, we’re looking at a rookie fire sale in Round 14.
Many of the popular pre-season selections will have a bye this weekend and are ripe to be cashed in or upgraded to premium selections to push your score higher for the rest of the season.
Tom Doedee, Bailey Banfield, Andrew Brayshaw, Jack Higgins and Ben Ronke won’t be playing this week, and you will also have to make a decision on Tim Kelly if you are still holding him.

ROUND 13: THE PHANTOM’S SUPERCOACH REVIEW
Paul Ahern and Brody Mihocek are the best of the downgrade options on the bubble, but waiting another week on St Kilda forward Josh Battle could also be a wise move.
He kicked three goals and scored 64 points against Gold Coast, enough to put himself in the frame as a downgrade option when St Kilda returns in Round 15.
This shapes as a crucial weekend of cash cow calls as you weigh up which players to keep until the end of the season. Here’s a helpful guide to assist you making those tough decisions.
TRADE NOW
Sam Murray ($334,000, DEF) Breakeven: 79
Jeremy Finlayson ($334,800, DEF-MID) BE: 78
Murray and Finlayson have done their jobs, making enough money and almost getting you through to their byes. Both haven’t been sighted at AFL level for a month and if they are still on your bench, it’s time to moved them on.
Bailey Banfield ($318,000, MID) – 72 points, BE: 52
Andrew Brayshaw ($307,300, MID) – 83 points, BE: 46
Banfield has a three-round average above 70, so you could mount a case for keeping him as midfield cover. But Fremantle’s bye represents an opportune time to cash him and teammate Andrew Brayshaw in (Banfield has increased in value by almost $200,000, Brayshaw by just over $100k). Ross Lyon has shown faith in his young players but you would expect they will be rested at some point in the second half of the campaign.
Jack Higgins ($292,800, FWD-MID) – 56 points, BE: 56
Higgins was part of Richmond’s centre bounce setup in the final quarter against Geelong which is a good sign for his job security but his average and break-even have met and Richmond’s bye seems the right time to cash in. He’s made almost $160,000, which has been a strong result.
Tom Doedee ($394,500) — 59 points, BE: 96
Time is up for one of this year’s most popular, and successful, cash cows. Doedee lost $11,100 this week and is likely to drop again after his next game. Use his bye to say thanks and swap him for a top-line defender — you only need $122k to jump to Kade Simpson.
Lachlan Fogarty ($311,700, MID) – 32 points, BE: 85
Fogarty will lose value for a few weeks after his bye as a result of his lowest score of the year. With the Cats on the bye, it’s time to bail.
Jack Henry ($306,900, FWD) – 35 points, BE: 79
You’ve ridden the rollercoaster with Henry for long enough. A high score of 114 and low of 27 for the year tell the tale of his first SuperCoach season. Cut your losses and move him on now.
Ben Ronke ($324,100, FWD) – 84 points, BE: 59
Another popular rookie who has this week off and you should consider trading. Ronke has scored above 60 in seven of his eight games and risen $200,200, a brilliant return from a player promoted off the rookie list.
WAIT ON
Jake Waterman ($274,500, FWD) – 38 points, BE: 80
Willie Rioli ($304,100, FWD) – 40 points, BE: 97
Billy Gowers ($276,000, FWD) – 48 points, BE: 47
Charlie Spargo ($238,000, FWD-MID) BE: 60
In any other week, we would advocate moving this group on. But the fact they are playing means that unless you can field 18 players without them, you’ll need to stick with Waterman, Rioli, Gowers and Spargo for another week. But start making plans to trade them in Round 15 or 16.
Jordan Ridley ($162,600, DEF) BE: 13
Ridley made a small profit before getting injured and will find it hard to win his spot back from Mason Redman. Fresh bodies will be important this week and Joel Smith is available for a similar price, but wait for Essendon’s team announcement before locking in any moves.
Jordan Cunico ($389,100, FWD) – 84 points, BE: 28
He’s unlikely to be a keeper, but Cunico is doing a superb job of pushing his price toward that of a fallen premium. There might come a point after Geelong’s bye where you can turn him into Sam Menegola, Michael Walters or Justin Westhoff and only part with a small portion of your bank.
Ed Phillips ($226,400, MID) BE: 17
Those who brought Phillips in to take them through until the Round 14 bye would have been disappointed when he was dropped last week. You need to ask whether you are happy with his $102,500 profit or whether you can be patient in the hope he can win his spot back through the VFL. With the bye this week it’s tempting to cut him loose but the priority trades are listed above — players who have all made a much bigger profit — so he’s likely to survive in most teams.
Jaidyn Stephenson ($316,100, FWD-MID) BE: 63
Bailey Fritsch ($416,200, FWD) BE: 54
Nick Holman ($371,200, MID) – 84 points, BE: 82
Stephenson, Fritsch and Holman have potential to be carried through until the end of the season. The trio is scoring well enough to provide cover in either your forward line or midfield. Whether you can afford to keep will depend on how many other options you have to be upgraded to deploy a team full of premium selections.
HOLD
As was the case last week, the rookie bible has played it safe and recommended keeping most of the options who will be playing, to help you field a full side in Round 14.
Those expected to feature you should hold on to are:
Ed Richards ($344,200, DEF) – 99 points, BE: 45
Liam Ryan ($252,800, FWD) – 45 points, BE: 19
Roarke Smith ($187,700, DEF) – 51 points, BE: 20
Zac Giles-Langdon ($271,800, FWD) BE: 15
Cam Rayner ($282,200, FWD-MID) BE: 19
Riley Bonner ($312,900, DEF) – 90 points, BE: 42
Charlie Ballard ($176,700, MID-FWD) – 49 points BE: -5
Matt Guelfi ($293,700, FWD) BE: 28
Paddy Dow ($307,800, MID) BE: 57
Meanwhile, these five players either have more money to make or in Kelly’s case, are too valuable to your side to part with yet despite their Round 14 bye.
Tim Kelly ($435,800, MID) – 75 points, BE: 96
Stefan Giro ($150,000, MID) – 66 points, BE: - 39
Logan Austin ($271,400, DEF) – 54 points, BE: 36
Bailey Rice ($234,200, DEF) – 46 points, BE: 29
Hunter Clark ($280,800, MID) – 98 points, BE: 24
BUBBLE BOYS
Paul Ahern ($123,900, FWD-MID) BE: -67
After scores of 84 and 57 in his first two AFL games, Ahern shapes as one of the top mid-season downgrades. It’s a bonus he will provide cover for the rest of the year in either your forward line or midfield. Get him in if you haven’t already.
Sam Taylor ($117,300, DEF) BE: -45
Taylor’s range appears to be around the 50-60 mark and that would only result in a slow price rise after his first few games — if he stays in the team. It’s a pass.
Tom Murphy ($124,900, DEF-MID) BE: -7
The young Roo offers defensive and midfield cover, which can be valuable, but then again, so does Joel Smith who scored 91 two weeks ago. Smith looms as a better option if you can wait a week or are willing to punt on him after one game.
Will Brodie ($187,700, MID) BE: -7
On the bubble again after being dropped last week but he appears to be out of favour.
Body Mihocek ($102,400, DEF) BE: -71
Questions still linger about whether Mihocek and Ben Reid can play in the same team, so only bring him in if you are chasing a bargain-basement defender. A safer play would be to wait an extra week and weigh up Mason Redman’s job security.
ONE-GAMERS
Mason Redman ($113,200, DEF) – 90 points
Redman was brilliant against the Lions two weeks ago and some coaches even brought him in despite his Round 13 bye. Take the cautious approach and have another look unless you need him to field 18 this week.
Joel Smith ($152,500, DEF-MID) – 91 points
Your trades might be limited at this point of the season, so take another opportunity to have another look at the man anointed to fill Jake Lever’s spot if you can. He was great two weeks ago, but you want to see him produce those numbers again. Plenty of coaches were burnt by going early on his teammate Tim Smith.
Jarrod Brander ($148,800, DEF-FWD) – 25 points
He didn’t score well in his first outing, but you need to consider him if you have James Sicily. Even if he’s not playing, you could bring him in at the opposite end to Sicily and then use the gun Hawk to cover injuries in attack or defence.
Patrick Wilson ($105,400, FWD-MID) – 34 points
His price makes him an option if you want to build your bank and Adelaide’s extended injury list might allow him an extended run in the senior side. Ahern is clearly a better option this week.
Ryan Garthwaite ($123,900, DEF) – 71 points
Questionable job security considering he came into the side for David Astbury, but his score on debut was a nice start.
