SuperCoach player Trevor McKenna, ranked 173,370th, scores 2352 to win weekly prize

Is your SuperCoach season not going to plan? Don’t despair. Trevor McKenna was ranked 173,370th out of 200,000 players and posted the highest score of the week to win $1000. Here’s how he did it.

Trevor McKenna still can’t believe it.

The emergency teacher admits he usually loses his SuperCoach head-to-head match-ups and hasn’t had much to show for his participation in Australia’s biggest fantasy game apart from the fun of competing.

Until this week.

Despite being ranked 173,370th of more than 200,000 players going into Round 7, the planets aligned for Trevor’s team CPRs and he rocketed to the top of the weekly rankings with a round-high score of 2352.

His son, who “lives and breathes” SuperCoach, has given Dad a new nickname: Steven Bradbury.

“It’s like a dream,” he said today. “I like this team, but how the hell did it get to the top?

“I generally lose by 90 points every week. This week I couldn’t believe it.”

McKenna has a simple, but not usually successful, selection strategy.

“I don’t pick the same as everyone else. I never go for the big-timers — never.”

That meant ignoring Patrick Dangerfield, despite his son’s protests.

“You’re never going to get ahead of the pack (picking the big names). What would have happened if Dangerfield, Cripps and Grundy all came up (with big scores)? I would have been nowhere near the top. But none of that happened — Danger had a stinker.”

McKenna’s unlikely success stories include Dayne Zorko (in 2 per cent of teams), Luke Shuey (2 per cent), Tarryn Thomas (2 per cent), GWS forward Jeremy Cameron (5 per cent), Docker Luke Ryan — who McKenna says is his pick of the year — plus a left-field ruck duo.

Ignoring Grundy and Max Gawn, he picked Todd Goldstein and Rory Lobb with Adelaide’s Riley O’Brien on the bench — and decided O’Brien’s form was good enough to give him a crack on the field.

That proved an astute move, as did bringing Jack Darling off the bench after scores of nine and 22 in his previous two games, although he admits there was an element of luck in that decision: “I read that Gryan Miers might be rested.”

But he says CPRs’ score could have been even bigger if he hadn’t traded out Elliot Yeo (for Tiger Jack Ross) and Ben Brown (for Eagle Josh Kennedy) last week. Brown scored 131 against the Blues and Yeo posted 132 while Kennedy struggled in the wet.

“If I had’ve kept them I would have blitzed it!”

The astonishing return has inspired McKenna to double down on his strategy, as much as his son shakes his head.

“It’s inspired me. I’ve got a lot of lateral ideas,” he said. “I’m going to tweak it this week — watch out.”

His team jumped more than 73,000 spots in the overall rankings to sit just outside the top 100,000, and also scored an all-important league win.

“I think I moved from 14th to 12th.”

He’s also $1000 richer and an inspiration to SuperCoach players everywhere.
