SuperCoach AFL: Matt Flynn a must-have? The rookie crisis, and Nick Daicos! | The Phantom's Lair

It’s not unusual to see Marcus Bontempelli and Zak Butters at the top of SuperCoach score projections for the week.

What is different is that they are in hardly any teams after delayed starts to 2025.

So, unless you’re forking out the bucks to bring them in this week, we need to look elsewhere to find a captain and vice-captain for round 7.

Fortunately, we have exclusive Champion Data stats that reveal which teams concede the most points in every position, providing vital intel when making those crucial captaincy and selection calls.

Here are the numbers you need to know this week.

WHO TO TARGET THIS WEEK

Port Adelaide players: North Melbourne concedes more points than any other team to general forwards and the sixth-most to opposition midfielders. And the Power get the Roos at home, where Jason Horne-Francis has posted 153 and 119 in his past two games. Expect Butters to go ballistic as well, while the Roos are a mid-table match-up for defenders – a group that now includes Connor Rozee.

Rucks v West Coast, Geelong and Richmond: Those thinking of trading Tom De Koning should rethink ahead of the second-easiest ruck match-up in the game. Lloyd Meek owners should cash in this week, and Max Gawn loves Anzac Day eve, posting 162 and 174 in this fixture the past two seasons.

Midfielders v Demons, Tigers, Eagles, Pies, Crows: Thursday night should be a free-for-all with Melbourne 18th for defending opposition midfielders and Richmond almost as bad – good news for Christian Petracca and Clayton Oliver. Expect Hawthorn mids to feast against West Coast, and Andrew Brayshaw to continue his hot start to the year when the Dockers face Adelaide.

Essendon is a mid-table match-up when it comes to midfielders, but Nick Daicos loves the big stage, and you can’t deny his recent form. But Zach Merrett could be an even safer bet – his past three scores against Collingwood are 145, 127, 133.

Defenders v Gold Coast and St Kilda: Matt Roberts and Riley Bice have the best match-up for general defenders this round and Dayne Zorko is due for a big game against the Saints.

WHO TO AVOID THIS WEEK

Midfielders v Brisbane, Bulldogs, Fremantle: The Lions are still the hardest midfield to score against even after last week’s debacle against Collingwood. The Dogs have been restrictive all season, so Finn Callaghan will have a tougher week, and Crows midfielders have a tough match-up against the Dockers.

Rucks v Port Adelaide: Jordon Sweet has been surprisingly restrictive on his opponents this season, presenting a challenge for a suddenly in-form Tristan Xerri.

Defenders v Carlton: The Blues give up the fewest points to opposition defenders – not ideal for Tom Stewart owners. The Giants are also hard to score against (beware, Bailey Dale) while Adelaide has also been a tough match-up for opposition defenders (Jordan Clark, Luke Ryan) over the first six rounds.

ULTIMATE STATS DROP: CBAs, KICK-INS AND MORE

SuperCoaches who stuck with West Coast bargain pick Elijah Hewett were rewarded this week with a tidy return of 96 in his first game since Round 3, aided by a big jump in CBAs.

Hewett ($188,300) attended 15 centre bounces, up from eight in his last game, seeing his value jump $39,300 as he put in a score well above a 57.3 average on his return from a calf injury.

Fellow Eagles cheapie Tom Gross, who scored 82 last week with 20 CBAs, was the sub in Round 6 as the Eagles welcomed back several stars.

His price still jumped $34,000, paying dividends for the 24.7 per cent of SuperCoaches who swooped in for some value.

Popular Hawks defender Karl Amon took half as many kick-ins as Round 5 but it didn’t affect his score, turning in a massive 152 in a losing game against the Cats.

Dayne Zorko continues to frustrate owners after a hot start to the season (139, 136 and 135). With fewer kick-ins to bolster the statsline – dropping from seven to three in a week – Zorko returned just 70 points, his third sub-100 score in three games.

Zorko’s value has now plummeted almost $50,000 since the start of the season.
