SuperCoach AFL 2024: Winners and losers from round 17

Hats off if you brought in Connor Rozee for close to $400,000. And there could be another high-scoring bargain up for grabs this week.

Everyone loves a bargain.

And getting the highest score of the round for close to $400,000 is about as good as it gets – well played if you grabbed Connor Rozee from the bargain bin in recent weeks.

If you had Rozee in your team and reversed trades to take him out an hour before the bounce on Saturday – oh, was that just me?

Here are all the heroes and villains from round 17, including another huge potential bargain.

WINNERS

CONNOR ROZEE – 168 POINTS

Set the tone early with an insane 18 disposals and almost 70 SuperCoach points on the board at quarter-time. He went on to finish with 36 touches, eight tackles and a goal. His partner in crime Zak Butters had 159 points of his own to torch one of the highest rated midfields in the AFL.

KIEREN BRIGGS – 148 POINTS

It’s been an underwhelming season for one of the SuperCoach finds of 2023, but Briggs turned it on against a combination of Tom De Koning and Patrick Cripps in the ruck. Twenty-two disposals, nine tackles and 16 contested possessions for the big man.

COLBY McKERCHER – 134 POINTS

With Zac Fisher out injured, McKercher returned from his own foot issues for his first game since round 9 and blitzed the Suns with 37 disposals at 84 per cent efficiency, including all 11 of North Melbourne’s behind kick-ins. He will shoot up in price but will still be an enticing trade option this week, especially if Fisher isn’t back for a while.

JYE CALDWELL – 134 POINTS

More than 13,000 coaches traded in Caldwell this week and were instantly rewarded with 30 disposals, seven tackles and a goal. Zach Merrett was brilliant as well, continuing a trend of opposition midfielders posting big scores against Collingwood.

ISAAC HEENEY – 129 POINTS

Never count out Isaac. Hard to believe he had just 36 points to his name halfway through the third quarter. Then he caught fire, kicking two goals to finish the third then almost helped the Swans pull off a nailbiting victory. But is in trouble with the MRO?

HAYDEN YOUNG – 125 POINTS

Shane Warne had Daryll Cullinan, and Hayden Young must look forward to every match against Richmond. He has now scored 125, 130 and 125 in his past three against the Tigers. He has kicked nine goals for the season and four of them have come against Richmond – two in round 8 and another two on Saturday night.

LUKE JACKSON – 121 POINTS

Jackson was handy in the first half against Richmond but took over in the second half after Sean Darcy was subbed out with concussion. He was dominated in the hitouts by Toby Nankervis but was brilliant around the ground, continually winning loose balls and linking up through the middle of the ground. He’ll go solo again next week against the Hawks.

SHAUN MANNAGH – 118 POINTS

An amazing gift for coaches who have held the mature-age Cat since he last appeared at senior level in round 2. Even better if you had him on field – like The Phantom. Mannagh followed up a six-goal return in the VFL with an excellent display in the AFL headlined by 14 tackles.

CHARLIE COMBEN – 108 POINTS

How many players have we traded ou tand back in again this season? Could Comben be added to the list? A popular mid-season cash cow, he has hit a rich vein of form with three scores in a row over 100. Ten intercept possessions for the former Kangaroos forward.

LOSERS

SAM WALSH – 69 POINTS

The latest victim of GWS tagger Toby Bedford, who has fast become public enemy No.1 for SuperCoaches. Walsh managed 22 disposals but just eight of them were kicks and only 11 hit the target.

JHYE CLARK – 56 POINTS

After being dropped Clark was a late in for the Cats and scored above his season average – but below his Break Even for the round, which means he’ll lose money this week. At least if he stays in the team he can provide some emergency bench cover.

CLAYTON OLIVER – 51 POINTS

Melbourne demolished the Eagles but Clarry missed the party with just 14 disposals for the afternoon at 57 per cent efficiency.

NAT FYFE – 39 POINTS

Fyfe scored 92 last week but this makes three of his past four games 51 or lower. The champ is bench cover only at this point of his career.

TOUK MILLER – 33 POINTS

Things were already going badly for Miller’s 37,000 owners when he was subbed out in the third quarter against North Melbourne with a a wrist injury. He’s likely to be a must-trade this week – if you have any left.

CHARLIE CURNOW – 33 POINTS

The dual Coleman medallist struggled to get a kick against Richmond’s Ben Miller a week ago and this round he he didn’t get a centimetre of space from Jack Buckley. Curnow kept his goal streak intact deep into the fourth quarter but the theory of picking him on the basis of Carlton’s fixture is looking dubious at best.

AARON NAUGHTON – -3 POINTS

The Bulldogs spearhead hadn’t recorded a disposal when he was subbed out injured in the first quarter on Saturday. But he did manage to give away a free kick, resulting in negative SuperCoach points.
