SuperCoach AFL 2024: Experts rank the most popular round 14 trades

There are tough choices to be made on the SuperCoach trade table. Who is getting it right? Experts rate the rookies and premos to buy and sell this week.

Bye round agony: How to survive the worst fortnight in SuperCoach | SuperCoach AFL

Finding players to trade out this week is easy. Picking the right replacements is a bit trickier.

A pair of rookies have emerged as the go-to targets but both come with a major complication – the round 15 bye. But with 18 players needed on field this week and cash required for other trades, options are limited.

However, when it comes to premiums, there is no shortage of possibilities.

Which way should you turn? Get the experts’ verdict on the 10 most traded out, and 10 most traded in, players for round 14.

MOST TRADED OUT

1. SAM CLOHESY $313,900 DEF/MID

Al Paton: TRADE. Wish I still had him as he’s the perfect rookie trade this round – on his bye and worth enough to make a real upgrade.

Tim Michell: TRADE. The days of him almost pushing record cash generation levels feel like about three months ago. Losing value and not scoring well enough to be of much use as insurance in defence or midfield.

Patch: TRADE. See ya, Sam. You’ve done your job, got to the byes, and it’s time go run on the wing in the sky.

Chloe Williams: TRADE. Has gotten himself to a nice price and it’s time to move him on. There’s not many rookies on the horizon, but he’s at a great stepping stone price and trading him will give you an extra player this round.

Dos: TRADE. After averaging 102.3 in his first three games, he’s scored four 40s in his last six games and is now on his bye. It’s time to go.

2. DARCY WILSON $368,900 MID/FWD

AP: TRADE. I’ve been a big Wilson fan but last week’s zero-point first half was a disaster. I think he has to go unless you plan to keep him as bench cover after the byes.

TM: TRADE. Even if it means you cop a doughnut this week. Would be a disaster if he scored 50 or less and lost upwards of $40k. Tough match-up against Brisbane away, too.

Patch: TRADE. I reckon he’s gotta go. No sure thing to even hold his spot. Flick him unless you desperately need him to get to 18 this week.

CW: TRADE. He’s lost about $35k and is set to drop another $30k – move him on now unless you want to see your hard earned money go down the drain!

Dos: TRADE. The idea of bye coverage was nice … if a 54 or 25 made your best 18 the last two weeks. A great rookie with a bright future, but we say goodbye for now.

3. CHRISTIAN PETRACCA $519,000 MID

AP: TRADE. Horrible injury means it’s an easy but sad call.

TM: TRADE. Two tons in eight weeks probably meant you were planning to sell anyway but with the brutal injury he copped on Monday the decision was made for you. Try to find $16k to grab Hayden Young off his bye.

Patch: TRADE. Get well soon, Trac, we’ll miss you. Righteo, now he’s in the ambulance and can’t hear me, send him to the knackery.

CW: TRADE. He endured a gnarly injury, so unfortunately, it’s time to say goodbye … and a sad goodbye it will be as he’ll take $148k of your cash with him, too.

Dos: TRADE. Ouch. The ribs, spleen and lung will take time to heal, as will our experience with owning any player not named Max Gawn wearing a Demons uniform.

4. WILL GRAHAM $290,400 DEF/MID

AP: TRADE. His DEF/MID DPP could be useful if you have other rookies who can go first, but it makes sense to use that cash to get more points on field.

TM: TRADE. You did well to stay patient and extract maximum value out of him and to be able to play Graham in the first two buys.

Patch: TRADE. Like Sam Clohesy, he’s done his job (mostly) and is free to go live on a SuperCoach farm somewhere.

CW: TRADE. He’s only just started to lose cash and isn’t playing this week, so if you HAD to keep him it wouldn’t be the worst situation. Trading him now will give you an extra playing player, though.

Dos: TRADE. “I don’t recall saying good luck.” Holding for a month netted patient coaches a cool $12.6K… so long, Graham.

5. HUGO GARCIA $215,100 MID/FWD

AP: TRADE. Stuck in the VFL, the Saints are winning and has the bye next week anyway.

TM: TRADE – Assuming he’s not named this week. If he is, take the cash gen and an extra number on field when plenty of coaches will be scrambling to field 18. He kicked three goals from 15 disposals in the VFL at the weekend.

Patch: TRADE. Will struggle to get in barring injuries at the Saints. I’m trading him this week.

CW: TRADE. I’ve really tried to be patient with Garcia, but I can’t bear to look at him just sitting there making no money. He still has a great break even at 5, but each week his chances of playing seem to dwindle, especially with the Saints’ limited injuries.

Dos: CONSIDER. Out of all the red dot rookies, I still like Garcia’s chances of cracking back into the team the most. If he’s your only avenue to an upgrade and he’s not named again, it’s still fine to jump off.

Charlie Comben at North Melbourne training. Picture: David Crosling

6. CHARLIE COMBEN $361,300 DEF/FWD

AP: HOLD. Unlike most on this list, he will play this week and next week. Trade out players on the bye instead.

TM: HOLD. Unless it doesn’t hurt your chances of fielding 18 in rounds 14 and 15. He’s losing value but before scoring 32 in round 13 Comben had a three-round average of 88.

Patch: HOLD: I think we give him another week or two considering how tight many people are for scores.

CW: HOLD: I was complaining this week about all of the rookies I missed this year, and Comben was one. I can’t remember who I prioritised but it probably wasn’t worth it. Break Even has risen to 93, but he is worth a hold for his score for the remaining byes.

Dos: CONSIDER. Comben’s coming off his worst score this season, but he’s a green dot, has FWD/DEF flexibility, and comes up against a friendlier matchup for key defenders this week.

7. JORDON SWEET $309,400 RUC

AP: TRADE. No point having $309k sitting on the bench.

TM: TRADE. Doesn’t look like getting back in anytime soon. Soldo is clearly Ken Hinkley’s No.1 and Port can’t play two rucks in a team featuring Jeremy Finlayson or Charlie Dixon.

Patch: TRADE. Send it.

CW: TRADE. It wasn’t very Sweet. He made some money, but not as much as we wanted, and now he may not play again barring injuries. Trade him and pretend you didn’t participate in this experiment.

Dos: TRADE. Seems to be a fair way off cracking back into the best 22.

8. LACHIE SULLIVAN $275,600 MID

AP: CONSIDER. If, like me, you have half a dozen rookies not playing in round 15 it might make sense to move one of them on now, but you would only do it if you still have at least 18 scorers this round.

TM: HOLD. A bad miss by me (I went Joe Richards instead). I’d love to have Sullivan available this week to help me field 18, especially up against North Melbourne. Break Even of 53 so could even make some cash before you punt him on the bye in round 15.

Patch: CONSIDER: Hold him if you can.

CW: HOLD. Sullivan’s Break Even of 53 is still achievable and he’s a warm body this week.

Dos: HOLD. If you can, I’d consider holding Sullivan for one last hurrah against North.

9. CLAYTON OLIVER $498,600 MID

AP: TRADE. Will lose ground on teams who have a 110-plus midfielder in that spot. Bye is the ideal time to move him on.

TM: CONSIDER. Very much a team-dependent call. After trading in Errol Gulden last week I have nine premo mids, so one of Oliver and Touk Miller are gone this week. Leaning towards Oliver, who probably gets more attention with Petracca injured and faces a big task to carry the Demons midfield deep into the year off little pre-season.

Patch: CONSIDER. I mean I don’t know the state of your team but he’d be ideal cover for the rest of the season.

CW: HOLD. This is interesting … I would’ve said trade if it wasn’t for Trac, but someone will have to stand up for the lowly Dees.

Dos: TRADE. I’m so on the fence with this. Right now, I’m trading. Tomorrow, I’ll be holding. His SuperCoach history begs us to hold. His form, the Demons struggles, and the gap between him and the 2024 uber premiums all scream trade.

10. TOM STEWART $466,800 DEF

AP: TRADE. Like Oliver, he’s a fair way below the best players on his line. Ideally replace him with a bye-free defensive premo.

TM: TRADE. Three tons in his past 10 matches, a period in which Stewart has averaged 87.1. That’s miles off the best SuperCoach defenders. Many coaches have put Stewart’s drop-off down to Zach Guthrie’s increased kick-in role. But interestingly Stewart’s kick-in per cent has only dropped from 38 to 37 per cent this year, so it’s other areas where he has dipped.

Patch: CONSIDER: Possibly one to trade out, but you’re doing pretty well if he’s your main concern.

CW: HOLD. He isn’t the Stewart we know and love, but he’s still averaging 92.5. Not worth a trade for me.

Dos: TRADE. It’s different to trading Jordan Dawson, Hayden Young, or Nic Martin earlier in the year. We have plenty of data to suggest this isn’t going to turn around. The issue is our trades remaining. If you’re tight on that front, consider holding and improving your team elsewhere.

MOST TRADED IN

1. BILLY DOWLING $123,900 MID/FWD

AP: BUY. Plan A is to bring in a rookie who will play over the next two rounds – if anyone finds one, let me know. In the world we actually live in, Billy is the best rookie on offer this week.

TM: BUY. Would have scored 80-plus on debut if his radar had been on during the last quarter against Richmond. Was largely played out of his preferred midfield role, but still found the footy. Plus, there will be a riot in Adelaide if he’s dropped anytime soon.

Patch: BUY. He’s in for me considering the dearth of rookie options. Make sure you don’t shoot yourself in your round 15 foot, though.

CW: BUY. Yes, as long as you have enough players for the next bye. He won’t increase in price for a while, but I bought him last week out of rookie desperation and was not disappointed.

Dos: BUY. 157 - 183 - 161 - 198 - 148 - 163 - 107 -167 -136 - 268 - 113 - 119. These are Billy Dowling’s SANFL Under 18 SuperCoach scores, courtesy of his No.1 fan – The Phantom. The 268 wasn’t a typo. Dowling had 44 disposals (16 contested), 17 marks, 14 score involvements, 7 clearances, 7 intercepts, 6 tackles, and 4 goals on that fateful day.

2. NATHAN KREUGER $123,900 RUC/FWD

AP: CONSIDER. Injury and scoring history is not good but we don’t have a lot of options.

TM: BUY. Many SuperCoach teams are already carrying Will Dawson and Zach Reid, plus a ruck doughnut in Coen Livingstone. If that’s you, the thought of trading in a player like Kreuger with such a wretched injury history will send shivers down your spine. But on the plus side he’s DPP, cheap and has North Melbourne this week, where he could kick a bag.

Patch: BUY. Same as Billy. I think he’s in ... for now.

CW: BUY. Look, it’s not ideal, but I think I’m going to go there. He’s playing this week (against North) and my round 15 coverage is OK.

Dos: CONSIDER. A nice game on the weekend puts him in the mix. There are a lot of players due back for the Pies in the next two weeks, so job security is still a major concern for all fringe Pies.

3. ERROL GULDEN $560,600 MID

AP: CONSIDER. You probably just missed his best score of the year (well played, Tim) but still good value at the price.

TM: BUY. What, we all didn’t get him last week? In all seriousness, the one trade I nailed this year was worth celebrating. Errol is still great value at this price and should run rings around Adelaide this week. He’s averaging 92.5 per cent time on ground, which is out of this world.

Patch: CONSIDER. Still convinced he floats between 105 and 110 with occasional spikes, but he’s way cheaper than a lot of other options who’ll do the same.

CW: CONSIDER. His price is amazing, he’s still making money and he’s fresh off a 131 and 157. I do get worried about his floor, though. I won’t give too much away, but there’s some juicy options at a similar price …

Dos: BUY. An underpriced ball magnet with a penchant for piggery. Shifting up a gear for the run home as he did last season, I’m looking to find a way to bring him in this week.

4. ZAC FISHER $520,800 DEF/FWD

AP: BUY. He could be the third-best forward behind Heeney and Flanders.

TM: BUY. Not to sound like the Noah Kahan hit, but I love kick-ins and it’s the season of the Fish. The biggest issue with North Melbourne’s backline in recent years has been the points were shared between Ziebell, Sheezel and Hall. But with Colby McKercher out indefinitely and Sheezel in midfield, Fisher is pigging out like I used to at the Smorgy’s buffet. How good was that mousse as a kid?

Patch: BUY. Finishing my side with Zac Fisher, what a time to be alive.

CW: BUY. Sold. I brought him back in last week, and this time, I have no regrets. He’s a seagull!

Dos: BUY. Cramped up late due to the immense amount of Sherrin he collected on the weekend.

5. LUKE RYAN $666,800 DEF

AP: BUY. Teams without Ryan are starting at a major disadvantage every week.

TM: BUY. Speaking of backline feasters, there’s none better than Ryan. Fremantle plays a game style where he’s allowed to sit deep behind the ball, use his ability to read the play and pick up uncontested kicks as the outlet for any switch. Regardless of how highly you value that role overall, it’s gold for SuperCoach. I just can’t see how he isn’t D1 this year.

Patch: BUY. The best player in the game. SuperCoach cheat code. Get him in.

CW: BUY. Another seagull. He’s had his bye now, so what are you waiting for? Get him in at all costs!

Dos: BUY. There’s no better feeling in SuperCoach than being a Luke Ryan owner.

6. LACHIE NEALE $635,200 MID

AP: CONSIDER. Well played Phantom for buying him last week but I would prioritise Serong or Butters this week.

TM: AVOID. Marcus Windhager awaits and Lachie has a propensity for getting very angry when tagged. You could be in for a seriously frustrating Thursday unless Ross Lyon unexpectedly sends Windhager to Josh Dunkley.

Patch: BUY. He’s a good option. Sure. Not the value option, but certainly a good one.

CW: BUY. Two 70s but the rest of his scores have been above 100. If you’re trading out an inconsistent underperformer (not naming names), Neale will provide you with peace of mind. Just beware of the tagger …

Dos: WAIT. Marcus Windtagger is on the menu this week, I’d prefer to wait until next week at the earliest, and even longer if he gets clamped for the potential price drop.

Jordan Clark is having a breakout season. Picture: Daniel Carson/AFL Photos via Getty Images
Jordan Clark is having a breakout season. Picture: Daniel Carson/AFL Photos via Getty Images

7. JORDAN CLARK $580,300 DEF

AP: CONSIDER. Having a fantastic year but he was scoring in the 80-110 range until exploding in the past three weeks, and I do worry that might be his more usual output.

TM: BUY. The second prize winner in the Fremantle backline sweepstakes. Sometimes you watch the Dockers and think, ‘I could get a kick in that defence’. But then you remember Jordan Clark is a much better footballer than you. He’s the 18th most expensive player in SuperCoach but scoring like he’s worth it.

Patch: BUY. There’s more value lying around but Clark is a fantastic POD and one I’m mad I didn’t pick early in the season despite wanting to.

CW: CONSIDER. I’m not sure I can find room for him amongst my plethora of Dockers, but if you’ve gone sparingly on the men in purple, why not bring him in. He’s a scoring machine and seems to be improving by the week.

Dos: BUY. The price is getting well and truly up there now but you can’t deny what he’s doing in the Dockers mark-kick happy game style.

8. CALEB SERONG $628,900 MID

AP: BUY. You want him in your finished team.

TM: BUY. One of SuperCoach’s most consistent midfielders all year with a floor of 91 and coming off the bye. The perfect time to jump on.

Patch: CONSIDER. Would probably rather a few other guys, to be honest.

CW: CONSIDER: The highest averaging pure mid, you’d be silly not to bring him in. Unless you want to roll the dice on one more price drop … his Break Even is 176 and he’s projected to drop another $20k.

Dos: BUY. He may very well be the top averaging player in SuperCoach by the end of the season. It’s upgrade season, we can ignore the high Break Even.

Dayne Zorko has a juicy match-up against St Kilda this week. Picture: Albert Perez/Getty Images
Dayne Zorko has a juicy match-up against St Kilda this week. Picture: Albert Perez/Getty Images

9. DAYNE ZORKO $593,700 MID/FWD

AP: BUY. Role is just too good. One of only four forward premos I have any confidence in.

TM: BUY. And slap the VC on him without hesitation. Unless Ross Lyon pulls a swifty and starts a forward tag on Zorko, he is going to absolutely pig out on a St Kilda team that seems to have little interest in stopping defenders from racking up the ball. I mean Alex Sexton took 12 marks in a half and seven Suns backmen averaged 115 points. That’s wild.

Patch: BUY. Will score eleventy billion points against St Kilda.

CW: BUY. I’ve been deliberating on Zorko (finding the cash for him) for way too long, and this week is the perfect opportunity to pull the trigger.

Dos: BUY. A match-up with the Saints has me nervous as a non-owner. I’ll likely bite the bullet to avoid the pain of a potential monster ceiling score.

10. ISAAC HEENEY $598,000 FWD/MID

AP: BUY. I said to wait until after his bye and here we are.

TM: BUY. It’s Heeney or Flanders for F1 this year, but Flanders has the bye this week. I think there will be games later in the year where Heeney plays more forward to manage his body with Sydney likely to lock away top-four weeks out from the end of the season. Even then, Heeney has shown he can score well.

Patch: BUY. Under $600k for the first time in a long time but will still be a top-six forward. Lock and load.

CW: BUY. End of story.

Dos: BUY. A top-two FWD in SuperCoach this year and he’s back under $600k.
