PATRICK Dangerfield and Dustin Martin’s goalkicking exploits last season had many a SuperCoach dreaming of 2018.

The short answer is don’t.

‘Danger’ and ‘Dusty’ — the No.1 and No.2 scorers in SuperCoach this year — will remain midfielders only next year.

While once available in the forward line, the Cat and Tiger spent too much time in the midfield during 2017 to be considered for dual-position status.

Champion Data statistics show Dangerfield spent 76 per cent of game time on the ball this season while Martin was in the guts 71 per cent of the time.

Their shift to dangerous forwards during the finals isn’t enough to change their positions.

As the Tigers charged towards a drought-breaking premiership, Martin spent just 57 per cent of his time in the midfield and 43 per cent in the forward line.

Dangerfield had similar numbers, 61 per cent onball and 39 per cent up in attack.

Spread across the entire season, those numbers would usually be enough to ensure midfield-forward eligibility.

Champion Data’s Daniel Hoyne said there would be no change in 2018.

“The finals got people excited but we look at the whole year,” he said.

The stats gurus will also be looking closely at the midfield v forward numbers of Dangerfield’s new teammate, Gary Ablett, after Cats champ Jimmy Bartel predicted he would kick 40-plus goals next season.

Peter Jankulovski, managing director of SuperCoach developers VaporMedia, said plans for 2018 were coming along nicely.

“We’re not changing too much (about the game), we can’t tell you much but hopefully in the coming months we can reveal more,” he said.
