SuperCoach AFL 2017: will you pick any of these players from the Sydney Swans?

THE Swans are flush with premium picks in 2017. Will you be splashing the cash? We look at the best options for your SuperCoach team.

IT’S almost unprecedented.

Three players from the same club all over $600,000 - all in the same position as well.

The Swans’ midfield triumvirate Josh Kennedy, Dan Hannebery and Luke Parker are some of the safest premiums available in SuperCoach 2017.

We wouldn’t advocate owning all of them but we wouldn’t blame you if you did.

Elsewhere, Lance Franklin continues to be one of the best picks in the forward line and Jarrad McVeigh in defence.

But it is in the mid-price region that the Swans throw up a couple of interesting prospects.

Isaac Heeney could move into the midfield and elevate his game to elite status while we hope Dane Rampe can improve his scoring consistency.

PREMIUMS

Lance Franklin ($514,600, Fwd)

The superstar Swan averaged 94 in 2016. Unbelievably, he’s only dropped under 90 twice since his debut season, which speaks to his scoring power. A rare thing for a key forward and at $514k he’s reasonably cheap. Select with confidence.

Dan Hannebery ($616,800, Mid)

What a season. Except for Rounds 17 and 18, Hannebery didn’t drop below 86 and racked up 17 tons from 22 games. Hannebery is one of the safest picks in SuperCoach if ultra-premiums Dangerfield and Pendlebury don’t appeal, look no further.

Josh Kennedy ($617,100, Mid)

Speaking of great seasons. Kennedy adds consistency. After a Round 1 75, Kennedy didn’t score less than 90 for the rest of the year and finished with 14 hundreds. How will the captaincy impact his game in 2017? We’re predicting positively.

Jarrad McVeigh ($483,600, Def)

The former captain just sneaks in here. Just. Because he’s a defender. The SuperCoach premium defenders stocks are historically thin and McVeigh has been one of the best over the years. Averaged 88 in 18 games in 2016 and should remain around that mark in 2017.

Luke Parker ($608,900, Mid)

Parker exploded out of the blocks in 2016, scoring five hundreds in the opening six rounds, including a 161 and 151. While Hannebery and Kennedy are more consistent, Parker has the ability to go big. He finished with 16 tons this year.

MID-PRICE RISKS

Jordan Foote ($182,800, Mid)

Not a mid-pricer but certainly a risk. Foote has been spoken about as a pre-season flyer and a possible midfield contender. If he’s there in Round 1 he could be this season’s George Hewitt. Foote played just one game in 2016, scoring 42.

Isaac Heeney ($433,400, Fwd)

The early breakout favourite for 2017. Heeney has spoken of his desire to step into the Swans midfield more often and with Tom Mitchell’s departure there’s an opportunity. Played 20 games in his second season and averaged 79. Now he needs to take the next step.

Dane Rampe ($468,600, Def)

He’s already elite in real life but can he take his fantasy game to the next level. The 2016 All-Australian averaged 86 this year but we need a little more from him to be considered premium. Only five hundreds for Rampe but only five under 70 speaks to his consistency.

Kurt Tippett ($479,200, Ruck)

Only available as a ruckman in 2017, which certainly limits his currency. However, he managed to average 88 in 14 games in 2016, which is food for thought. Had a purple patch in the middle of the season that saw him score five tons in six games but probably needs to ruck solo.

ROOKIES

Darcy Cameron ($117,300, Ruck-Fwd)

A third ruck option but don’t be surprised if the mature-age recruit gets some game time. If Kurt Tippett struggles with injury and either Callum Sinclair or Sam Naismith have form issues, Cameron comes into calculations. DPP status helps.

Oliver Florent ($166,800, Mid-Fwd)

The Swans top draft pick could very easily challenge for games early in 2017. Florent provides some outside run and carry which is exactly what the Swans are looking for. With Kennedy, Parker and Hannebery doing the heavy inside work, Florent could cash-in.

Nic Newman ($123,900, Def)

Surely this bloke gets a chance in 2017. Newman, the former Frankston Dolphin - has been carving up the NEAFL and just needs a chance at AFL level. Newman could be next year’s George Hewitt or Tom Papley, playing early games and a key early cash cow.

TEAM PREVIEW

The Swans are hurting, there’s no doubt about that.

After losing a second Grand Final in three years, Sydney must regroup and go again.

While they’ve lost Tom Mitchell to Hawthorn, the Swans have academy young guns Isaac Heeney and Callum Mills ready to step up.

John Longmire certainly hasn’t lost anything when it comes to his playing list and with the likely improvement of Heeney, Mills, Allir Aliir and Jake Lloyd should see them remain premiership contenders.

The Swans’ ruck division is perhaps their only weakness with Sam Naismith proving he can handle the No.1 mantle with help from Kurt Tippett, while Callum Sinclair will be available from Round 1 after injury ended his 2016.

However, with a midfield that contains Kennedy, Parker and Hannebery the quality of the ruckman isn’t as important, especially when they’re delivering to Lance Franklin up forward.
