WE’RE now entrenched in the most challenging period of the SuperCoach calendar and one that’s become synonymous with separating the contenders from the pretenders.

The prepared coaches amongst us would have thrived, while most (if not all) would have struggled to field a side of 18 players for this week’s action.

Here’s to you, Aaron Sandilands.

ERADICATOR: AT LAST, IT’S TIME TO TRADE IN A BARGAIN

ROUND 12: ONE BYE DOWN, IT’S TIME TO GO SHOPPING

STUDS & DUDS: KELLY EXPLODES, DUSTY DOMINATES

All is not lost, however, because you can still supercharge your side and rocket up the rankings with several astute trading decisions across the remainder of the byes.

Our resident expert, Daniel Begala, casts his eyes across the SuperCoach “stock market” and the blue chip, speculative and penny stocks to watch after Round 11.

BLUE CHIP STOCKS

CHARLIE DIXON ($523,000, Fwd)

Average: 102 Breakeven: 66

The hulking Port Adelaide forward has roared into SuperCoach relevance with a string of ominous performances that have now catapulted his average over the magical 100-point threshold. Nursing the weight of the world following his brain fade against the Cats, Dixon grabbed Hawthorn by the scruff of the neck in a standout big-man performance that included four goals, 20 disposals and whopping 167 SuperCoach points. The Power have served their bye and Dixon is owned by a mere 1.8% of teams. If risk is your game, Charlie’s your man.

JOSH KELLY ($585,600, Mid)

Average: 114 Breakeven: 63

The player of the round and the fast becoming the best player at the Giants, if not, the whole competition. Kelly’s performance against the Bombers was one for the ages and will further fuel demand amongst rival clubs jostling for his services. He’s the prototype of the modern midfielder and on Saturday afternoon Kelly had the ball on a string in a performance that encompassed 38 disposals, 10 tackles, a goal and 177 SuperCoach points. If it weren’t for his Round 13 bye, Kelly would be the most traded in premium midfielder this week. The SuperCoach Investor sees the hallmarks of a long and prosperous scoring career for young, Josh Kelly.

PATRICK DANGERFIELD ($661,400, Mid)

JOEL SELWOOD ($586,400, Mid)

SCOTT SELWOOD ($348,000, Mid)

The dynamic duo of Patrick Dangerfield and Joel Selwood have recently welcomed the addition of a new member to the Cats’ engine room, Scott Selwood, whose influence has been profound in a rejuvenated tagging role. His addition has coincided with the resurgence of the competition’s best midfielder, Patrick Dangerfield, who over the past three weeks has averaged an astonishing 154 SuperCoach points. “Scooter” (Scott Selwood), as he’s affectionately known, is looming as one of the most integral acquisitions of the byes and will likely blossom into the perfect M9 candidate. They’re not a duo anymore, they’re “DangerWoodWood”.

DUSTIN MARTIN ($602,300, Mid)

Average: 118 Breakeven: 66

The boat has now officially sailed on Dustin Martin whose performances across the past month are second only behind the rampaging Patrick Dangerfield. North Melbourne preached a plan to stop Dusty, however on Saturday night they were rendered speechless by a virtuoso display that included 38 disposals, two goals and 166 SuperCoach points. We’ve spruiked his wares in the lead-up to the byes, however with his price now skyrocketing above $600k, you’ll probably be forced to look elsewhere for midfield value. The SuperCoach Investor considers the best priced options as Adam Treloar ($563k), JPK ($545k) and the Gary Ablett ($585k). If it’s Dusty you’re after, then have the chequebook and war chest at the ready.

SPECULATIVE STOCKS

JARROD WITTS ($466,300, Ruck)

Average: 94 Breakeven: 82

The bargain basement big man has rubber-stamped himself as one of the competition’s most improved players in 2017. He would have initially only set you back $217k, but Witts’ rich vain of form has now seen him become entrenched amongst the top-10 scoring ruckmen. If you’ve held Witts from the start, pat yourself on the back as he’ll continue to be a vital cog of your bye round strategies and potentially beyond. 14 disposals, 34 hitouts and 94 points isn’t too shabby for this money ball selection.

PENNY STOCKS

ANDY OTTEN ($376,200, Def)

Average: 79 Breakeven: 65

He’s been admirable, but the time has now come to cash your chips in and upgrade Otten to one of the defensive generals you foresee finishing the year as a top-six scorer. The SuperCoach Investor has earmarked the those defenders, based on averages, as Sam Docherty, Taylor Adams, Rory Laird, Dylan Roberton, Michael Hibberd and Jake Lloyd. If your defensive stocks are looking a little slim, it’s essential you upgrade Otten and revel in the spoils of consistent, high-grade defensive scoring.

JAMES COUSINS ($102,400, Mid)

Average: 62 Breakeven: -62

In a week bereft of rookie options, Cousins looms as a well-timed downgrade target for those coaches looking to free up some much-needed cash. His performances have not been groundbreaking (14 and 12 disposals), but it’s expected Cousins will be given every opportunity to thrive in the youthful Hawks outfit. He’s as cheap as they come, $102k, but his Round 13 bye may deter some coaches from taking the plunge.

MATT SCHARENBERG ($164,000, Def)

Average: 56 Breakeven: -14

Bucks has spruiked his wares and has publicly declared Scharenberg will be given a month, at the least, to rekindle his career at the top flight following a sequence of devastating injuries. He’s high-end talent, a former top 10 draftee and has all the hallmarks of a mature-aged player that could settle himself into the Magpies back six. The issue, however, is his starting price ($164k) and the fact he’ll be sitting out in Round 13 with Collingwood serving their bye.

BYE, BYE, BUY?

ROUND 12

With the first of the dreaded byes now a thing of the past, it’s integral that you trade in an additional one or two premium stars in preparation for Rounds 12 and 13.

As discussed last week, focus your attention on the likes of Marcus Bontempelli, Josh Kennedy, Marc Murphy and Gary Ablett, who are all fresh and ready to lead your side to glory across the remainder of the byes and beyond.

The other selection that looms, if he’s firstly able to prove his fitness, is Tom Rockliff whose well-known scoring capabilities know no barriers.

ROUND 13

The Round 13 bye poses the most threat to coaches, however can be circumvented if you carefully manage your trades across the next fortnight.

We’ll obviously be short-staffed with SuperCoach goldmines, Adelaide and Collingwood, serving their. They’ve been exceptional servants for our SuperCoach teams, Will Hoskin-Elliot and Andy Otten, but if you haven’t already parted ways, it is paramount that you do so.

Cash is also an essential ingredient for Round 13, so come prepared and be ready to spend big in your quest to submitting a side with 18 starting players.
