HAS Melbourne unearthed a new midfield gun?

The Demons had a major centre square shake-up on Saturday night as they adjust to life without Christian Petracca.

With Clayton Oliver copping a heavy tag and spending more time outside the centre bounce mix, Simon Goodwin turned to Trent Rivers, who has spent most of the season, and his 91-game AFL career, in defence.

Against North Melbourne, Rivers’ CBAs spiked from zero to 80 per cent, and the $451k defender in SuperCoach delivered a season-high score of 131 points.

Tom Sparrow’s CBAs also more than doubled, from six last round to 13 against the Kangaroos, but Kysaiah Pickett lost his centre square role, attending nine CBAs after he was at 19 the previous round.

In other big CBA and kick-in moves in round 15:

TOBY Greene was used at nine centre bounces against the Swans, a blast from the past for the former midfielder. He has been thrown into the middle on several occasions this season but so far without a huge impact; he scored 72 SuperCoach points on Saturday from 18 disposals.

ARCHIE Perkins’ CBAs jumped from four to 22 against the Eagles.

NAT Fyfe’s CBAs dived from 25 to 10, and the champ managed just 43 SuperCoach points in Fremantle’s win against Gold Coast.

TOM Powell took two kick-ins for North Melbourne.

SOME of the AFL’s kick-in kings had to find other ways to score points last round. Luke Ryan had just three kick-ins against the Suns, Zach Fisher two for North Melbourne and Lachie Whitfield had five for the Giants, down from 12 the week before.

ALEX Sexton spent time on a wing but still managed to take five kick-ins for the Suns, playing on from all of them.

Secret SuperCoach stats

Each week Champion Data guru Fantasy Freako lifts the lid on the SuperCoach scoring system by analysing key moments from the weekend games.

Here are the numbers you need to know from round 15.

The all-new Tom Green

Tom Green’s first half was huge against the Swans, collecting 118 points – a season-high. He had 22 disposals, nine contested possessions and four tackles to go with one score assist. It was only the fourth time this year he had at least 50 points at the half.

One major difference from recent weeks was his efficiency, which was outstanding. Of his 71 acts for the game just two were negative – a free against and handball clanger.

The all-new Clayton Oliver

Oliver hasn’t played a worse game in his career, with just two points to his name at halftime and 32 by the final siren.

He lost 23.5 points in negative acts, made up of five frees against and one 50m penalty.

Defensively, Oliver had seven tackle attempts but just one stuck to cap off a miserable night.

Fourth-quarter specialists

Luke Davies-Uniacke delivered in another close finish, scoring 59 points in the last quarter against Melbourne after a huge 73 points in the final term against Collingwood a week earlier.

Across the season, Davies-Uniacke ranks 18th in the AFL for points scored in the final quarter.

The top five Q4 scores for the year are:

89 – Marcus Bontempelli v Collingwood in round 12

82 – Luke Ryan v Port Adelaide in round 5

79 – Mason Wood v West Coast in round 12

79 – Bodhi Uwland v St Kilda in round 13

79 – Nick Vlastuin v Sydney in round 3

A tale of two kitties

The games of Tom Stewart and Jhye Clark on Friday night perfectly illustrated the SuperCoach scoring system.

Efficiency was the difference in their scores, as was where the ball was won on the ground.

Stewart hit the target with 12 of his 15 disposals, and collected 10 disposals in the defensive 50. He also won five intercept possessions and laid seven tackles to finish with 107 SuperCoach points.

Clark scored 31 SuperCoach points from five more disposals than Stewart. However, only eight of Clark’s 20 disposals were effective, and he laid just two tackles.

Stat of the Week – Running Bounces

One of the easiest ways for a player to score points is via a running bounce. It’s a simple two-point play and if you can roam down the wing and have four in a row – then it earns you eight points as a raw figure.

A running bounce is defined as touching the ball onto the ground, either directly or via a bounce, to allow a player to avoid being penalised for running too far.

If we look at the leaders in this stat atop of the list is Chad Warner with 48. To put that figure into context he had just 17 last season from 20 games. He had been a lot more aggressive with ball in hand this year and he is taking the game on a lot more.

Daniel Rioli has always ranked high in this stat and has 40 for the year. He had 50 to his name last season from 23 games, so he is well on his way to smashing that number.

Zak Butters had four on the weekend for a season tally of 40 – already surpassing last year’s tally.

Andrew McGrath has 38 and is on track to match his 67 from last season, while Shai Bolton has already beaten his personal-best from last year (29) with 30.

Over the past four years Adam Saad leads the league with 241 running bounces – well ahead of Nick Hind (142) and Rioli (128).
