SuperCoach Draft really is the ultimate way to play KFC SuperCoach. For fans of American sports who have played Draft games over the years, SuperCoach Draft offers the same concept.

But in SuperCoach Draft, there are seven key tips any team manager needs to be aware of before they begin picking players for their unique side.

1: GO IN WITH A PLAN

Going into a SuperCoach Draft without a plan would be like driving with your eyes closed. It’s fraught with danger and it only ends up with one outcome – an absolute wipe-out of epic proportions. Prior to the draft commencing, ensure you’ve gathered all your materials, organised your rankings, jotted down the sleepers and breakout contenders you’d like to target and what your overall strategy is. Draft day will throw up an array of twists and turns so it’s important you go in with a contingency plan to mitigate any rushed or pressured selections.

PRO TIP: Keep your eyes across our Draft rankings that occur throughout January, February and March to track player progress.

2: DO YOUR RESEARCH

If you’re holding your draft prior to the preseason competition, then it pays to go over data from last season. More so, do the rounds across social media and Fox Footy and ascertain which players are building hype in the preseason before the games have come around. If you’re holding your draft after the preseason competition, then you’ll know of any injuries, you’ll have a better sample size of positional changes and subsequent scoring too. Fox Footy will also have draft rankings available across all positions to help ease the process.

PRO TIP: Keep tabs on articles published by Fox Footy, The Herald Sun and The Advertiser and grab yourself a News+ Subscription for in-depth SuperCoach analysis. It’s just $1 for 28 days.

3: PREDICT SLEEPERS WHO MIGHT BE FLYING UNDER THE RADAR

It’s inherently important that when the big guns are off the board, you are looking to your next batch of Draft types who can help your team rise to the top. Sleepers and breakout contenders will go a long way to helping your team throughout the season. Breakout contenders are those who are pressing their claim to push into elite status, while sleepers are players who’ve fallen off the radar due to long term injury, lack of opportunity at their current club or they’re players who’ve switched teams in the offseason for greater game time. Find them, note them down and roll the dice!

PRO TIP: A player’s last 3-5 games of the season is usually a great indicator of who is going to take the next step in their SuperCoach points output.

4: TRADE, TRADE AND TRADE SOME MORE

You can’t afford to be clingy or over-emotional when it comes to Draft. It’s a cut-throat caper that could see Patrick Dangerfield traded out for five role players coming back the other way to help your team with its depth and positional coverage. Don’t be afraid to offer some crazy trades; the worst that can happen is a coach laughs in your face and rejects it. Encourage counter offers and get the conversation happening.

PRO TIP: Ensure commissioners turn on multiple player trades so that one player can be traded for multiple others.

5: KEEP AN EYE ON A WAIVER LIST

Any seasoned drafter will tell you that while Draft day is important, glory is ultimately won from the waiver wire. In between your Draft finishing and the season commencing, all undrafted players will become free agents that you can pick up at any time. However, once the season starts, these players move to what’s called a waiver wire for a 24-48 period. If you keep your finger on the pulse, you might just grab an 80+ point freebie. This, of course, means delisting an existing player on your list. Remember, the waiver wire is a priority order from last on the ladder to first, commencing from the end of your nominated first round of your SuperCoach Draft season.

PRO TIP: In your league settings, you can choose how the waiver wire is attributed. Choose between reverse ladder priority (lowest-ranked team to highest) or last pick to bottom.

6: MONITOR INJURY LISTS

You need to be savvy when it comes to injuries. Some players are worth stashing away on your bench while others have to be unceremoniously dumped. This will be partly due to the length of their injury lay off and the role they have in your Draft team. If Nat Fyfe is going to miss for four weeks, then you stash him on your bench. If Cale Hooker is missing for the same amount of time, then he’s delisted and replaced with a free agent from the waivers.

PRO TIP: SuperCoach Draft will notify you if you have players who are injured that are on field. During the preseason it’s important you keep your ear to the ground.

7: MAKE FULL USE OF THE LOOPHOLE

In Draft, there is a loophole option. If you’ve got a ‘fringe’ type player who is playing early in the round, say a Thursday or Friday night game, put them to the bench with the emergency firmly placed on them. If they score well, then activate your loophole. If they don’t, replace them and it’s a free hit. It’s a great way to maximise potential scoring output.

PRO TIP: Commissioners will need to activate rolling lockout in the Draft settings for this to take effect. If you opt for a lockout throughout the whole round, then prior to the round commencing you’ll need to select a set and forget the team that also includes your captain and vice-captain and hope for the best! If your league has lockout activated, then ensure your commissioner has emergencies turned on to account for any late withdrawals.
