Callum Mills, Izak Rankine and Sam Simpson shine in KFC SuperCoach Round 6

Callum Mills was one of the lowest SuperCoach scorers on the ground at quarter-time against Richmond. This is how the Sydney defender turned it around to make himself the No. 1 scorer of Round 6.

Targeting Lachie Whitfield | KFC SuperCoach AFL Podcast

The KFC SuperCoaches with Callum Mills in their teams would have been cursing their luck on Sunday at quarter-time.

Mills’ only involvement in the opening term against Richmond was a spoil as the Sydney defender went to the first break with a SuperCoach score of -1.

What unfolded from that point will go down as one of the greatest turnarounds in KFC SuperCoach history.

Mills scored 60 points in the second quarter and 76 in the third, gathering 23 disposals, 18 marks and 12 intercept possessions during that stretch.

By three-quarter-time he had 135 points and went on to score a round-high 174.

His final totals read: 29 disposals, nine marks, 15 intercept possessions.

The phenomenal score has Mills in the sights of many coaches ahead of Round 7 as they look to capitalise on his break even of 19.

At $532,400 and with scores of 112, 119 and 173 in the past three rounds, is it time we officially retire his ‘burn man’ tag?

CHAMPION DATA MARKET WATCH: SIMPSON’S STATS IN FOCUS

More than 10,000 coaches have traded in Geelong’s reigning VFL best and fairest Sam Simpson ahead of Round 7 after his career-best KFC SuperCoach performance against Brisbane Lions.

Simpson had 112 SuperCoach points, 58 higher than his previous best of 54.

Simpson, Izak Rankine and Will Day are popular targets this week after they excelled in their first games of the campaign in Round 6.

Champion Data breaks down the key numbers behind Simpson’s long-awaited AFL return in this week’s market watch.

Sam Simpson

Playing his first match at AFL level since Round 17, 2018 — Sam Simpson stormed home — scoring 69 of 112 SuperCoach points after half time. He finished with a game-high 27 disposals, also recording 13 contested possessions, five tackles and two clearances from 82 per cent game time.

Tom Mitchell has a formidable recent record against Collingwood.

Tom Mitchell

Mitchell continued his recent domination against the Magpies – racking up a season-high 33 disposals and 23 uncontested possessions from 87 per cent game time. He was excellent on the inside – winning nine pre-clearance disposals and pre-clearance seven contested possessions – both team-highs. Mitchell scored 122 SuperCoach points – ranked second on the ground.

Jack Viney

Viney bounced back to reach three figures for the first time since the season opener – scoring 123 SuperCoach points in Melbourne’s win over the Suns. He finished with 21 disposals, 12 contested possessions, two inside 50s and one score assist. His defensive effort was also excellent — recording a team-high eight tackles from eight tackle attempts.

YOUNG GUN: Izak Rankine

The highly anticipated debut of Rankine was the highlight of the round – recording six shots at goal (3.3) and eight score involvements – both game high tallies. He collected 111 SuperCoach points and almost won the match for the Suns — scoring 68 points after half time. Rankine finished with 12 disposals, eight contested possessions and one score assist.

Mills excelled at winning the ball back, recording a round-high 15 intercept possessions – four more than any other player for the round.

RAGE TRADES: WHAT’S GOING ON WITH DUSTY?

With all teams playing outside their home states, form was thrown out the window in Round 6.

But the one thing we could still rely on was having plenty of players that caused concern for KFC SuperCoaches.

With interstate hubs set to become the new normal in an uncertain 2020 season, there was plenty for KFC SuperCoaches to learn and take into Round 7.

Jon Ceglar is one of the few ruckmen whose scoring has not spiked this year.
Jon Ceglar is one of the few ruckmen whose scoring has not spiked this year.

BOOT HIM

Dustin Martin Mid $481,100 – 66 pts

Dusty is in just over 50 per cent of teams and it would be a huge call to trade him out of your side but he hasn’t scored more than 93 since round 1. This week’s 66 points was his lowest score of the season. He has already dropped $62k and is likely to drop further with a break even of 122 now.

Jonathon Ceglar Ruc/Fwd $415,700 – 43 pts

This week’s score of 43 followed his 53 from last round. This would be a huge concern for owners. But what was even more concerning was that he was taken off the ball and Ben McEvoy rucked for significant portions of the game against Collingwood. With McEvoy doing a great job against Grundy, this could see reduced minutes for Ceglar as the first-choice ruck when the Hawks come up against the team with the top-line ruckmen.

Shannon Hurn Def $455,800 – 39 pts

Hurn had a terrible score this week but he has now had two in a row under 70 — plus, he hasn’t been over 90 since Round 1. He has dropped in value significantly in the past two rounds and will drop further now with this score in his cycle for a few weeks. If you don’t plan on holding him to see if he recovers at Optus Stadium, you have to cut him this week before he drops to close to $400K.

Shannon Hurn has struggled to post premium KFC SuperCoach scores since Round 1.
Shannon Hurn has struggled to post premium KFC SuperCoach scores since Round 1.

Rory Laird Def $486,200 – 76 pts

He may have had two scores of 107 in the last few weeks, but Laird has also had four scores under 90. He isn’t displaying the high scores we have seen from him in recent years. This week it was fellow defender/wingman Brodie Smith who scored prominently. You may not want to boot him, but you may want to send him a message by rage trading him for a few hours at least.

Darcy MacPherson Fwd/Mid $356,800 – 34 pts

MacPherson was highly touted after a dominant pre-season but he is certainly underdelivering. This week was his lowest score of the season and he has had only one total over 65 which was a 111. That showed he can produce good numbers but doing it just once from six games is not enough. All KFC SuperCoaches should be trading him out, if they haven’t already.

Devon Smith Fwd/Mid $393,900 – 68 pts

Smith’s last three weeks have delivered two 70s and a 68. At what we paid for him, he isn’t delivering near enough. His price is falling to the extent you may need to hold him but if you wanted to move him on you would certainly be forgiven.

Brad Ebert Fwd $492,100 – 47 pts

The last two weeks have seen Ebert’s lowest scores and he is also at risk of a suspension which should e known by Monday afternoon. He had a great start to the season but these two low scores and the possible week off mean that not only will he lose money he may not score you any points either.

Marc Pittonet Ruc $434,200 – 75 pts

Pittonet had a fantastic start this season but his last three games have seen his score slowly reducing. His 75 this week would have hurt those coaches that have been relying on him as their R2. If he continues this slide then you will need to look at trying to upgrade him as soon as possible.

Chad Wingard endured a down week against Collingwood, only managing 34 points.
Chad Wingard endured a down week against Collingwood, only managing 34 points.

ON WATCH

Chad Wingard Fwd/Mid $484,300 – 34 pts

This was Wingard’s lowest score this season and he only had three touches to halftime. He played a lot of the first half forward and the ball simply wasn’t getting down there as the Magpies dominated. When a player spends significant time down forward, these sort of scores can happen. Don’t trade for now, as we know he can score big, but just keep him on watch.

Zach Merrett Mid $578,900 – 68 pts

Since the week off Merrett has had a 78 then a week’s suspension and now a score of 68. This is a huge concern for those that brought him in after the first two games where he went 100+. You may want to give him one more week but another sub-90 should have you looking for the trade button.

Consistent KFC SuperCoach scorer Mitch Duncan injured his hamstring in Geelong’s win over Brisbane.
Consistent KFC SuperCoach scorer Mitch Duncan injured his hamstring in Geelong’s win over Brisbane.

INJURY WATCH

Mitch Duncan Mid $555,300 – 13 pts

Duncan left the ground in the first quarter with a hamstring issue, he tried to return but he was ruled out at quarter time. With the likelihood of quick turnarounds in coming weeks the Cats will want to make sure he is 100 per cent right before they bring him back in.

Hugh McCluggage Mid $576,700 – 74 pts

McCluggage had a big hit to his shoulder just before halftime and then another one after the break. He went down to the rooms for a jab and some taping and then courageously played out the game. Keep an eye on injury reports in case there was some more damage than we could initially see. Prior to getting injured McCluggage wasn’t scoring as well as he has been, mostly due to the return of Dayne Zorko.

Hayden Young Def $273,700 – 1 pt

Young suffered an ankle injury early against St Kilda and this could see him miss some time. But more importantly for coaches his one point total will see him now have a Break Even of 91. Even if he is able to play, his price will drop over the next couple of weeks while this score is in his cycle.

Josh P Kennedy Mid $501,800 – 18 pts

Kennedy suffered a Medial Ligament strain early in the Swans lost to the Tigers. It wasn’t considered a bad one but it will still see him miss probably 2-3 weeks. In the current season that is just too long to have a player of his standard and cost on the bench. You should probably look at trading him out.

Sam Menegola is benefiting from a return to Geelong’s engine room.
Adam Treloar has been his typical prolific-self since returning for Collingwood.
Adam Treloar has been his typical prolific-self since returning for Collingwood.

Buy Him

Sam Menegola Mid $498,800 – 152 pts

Menegola has had four games with more than 100 points and this week was his best for the season. He was in less than 1000 teams at the start Round 6, but this number is sure to rise quickly. With Mitch Duncan injured, we could see Menegola get even more midfield time. His 26 touches and two goals will almost certainly have brought him to the attention of many KFC SuperCoaches.

Dayne Zorko Mid $492,700 – 119 pts

Zorko returned from injury and dominated the first half. This was his best score of the season and second of more than 100 points. His influence took points away from Hugh McCluggage. Zorko missed his BE and dropped in value. His new BE of 122 will see him either maintain price or drop slightly this week If he misses his BE in round 7 then he could be well worth picking up after that.

Adam Treloar Mid $613,500 – 122 pts

This was his second game back and we have seen enough. Get him in. A 119 and 122 has been enough to convince coaches that he is well and truly recovered from injury and has slotted back into that midfield rotation seamlessly.

Michael Walters Fwd/Mid $572,600 – 107 pts

Walters is off to a flying start to season 2020 with just one score under 100. He is in just under 20 per cent of teams which is mainly due to those that have been burnt by him before and his high price. However, he seems to have found consistency and should be a serious consideration as he looks to be heading towards the top-six, if not top-three forwards.

Touk Miller Mid $541,000 – 142 pts

Miller has now had four scores over 110 this season. He is flying under the radar and was in only 628 teams prior to Round 6. Many people are focusing on the rookies at Gold Coast and overlooking players like Miller who has been getting the job done consistently.

Callum Mills Def $532,400 -173 pts

Mills has now had three in a row over 110 now and this week’s score of 173 was massive. It was the fifth highest score we have seen in KFC SuperCoach this season. If we see any time missed by Josh Kennedy and maybe Isaac Heeney who hurt his ankle this will open the door for Mills to spend more time in the midfield.

Nick Haynes Def $561,600 – 113 pts

Haynes has been putting together a fantastic season and is on track to be one of the top 6 defenders this season. His lowest has been 97 and he is averaging 113. He is in 10% of teams shortly after lockout was lifted but this is likely to rise over the next few weeks with more scores like this. With a BE of just 67 he is not going to get much cheaper than this.
