Round 11 SuperCoach whispers: Popular defensive rookie Marty Hore sends scare as Instagram story hints at injury

A possible injury to popular SuperCoach defensive rookie of the year Marty Hore could be set to throw the trade plans of almost 100,000 coaches into turmoil on the eve of the byes.

AFL Mid-season draft 2019 wrap

It is the Instagram story which has almost 100,000 SuperCoaches rethinking their trade plans.

SuperCoach defensive rookie of the year Marty Hore was shown on teammate Angus Brayshaw’s Instagram story today with his calf wrapped, hinting at a possible injury.

Mature-age recruit Hore has been one of the few positives for last year’s preliminary finalist this season, ranking No. 2 in the AFL for intercept marks per game behind Jeremy McGovern.

Hore has averaged 86.8 points per game this year and made a $279,200 profit from his initial price to be $396,500 heading into Round 11.

The possible injury could not have come at a worse time for SuperCoaches who were hoping to use Hore as a valuable scorer during the byes either side of his Round 13 rest.

DANGERFIELD TO MAKE WELCOME RETURN FOR CATS

Patrick Dangerfield will provide a boost to almost 130,000 SuperCoach teams when he returns from an ankle injury against Sydney. Many coaches were forced to trade early to St Kilda small forward Robbie Young (17 points) as a result of Dangerfield’s week off. The Geelong Advertiser reports Dangerfield pleased coaches with his movements at training on Tuesday and is poised to return in place of suspended veteran Gary Ablett. His teammate Charlie Constable, who is still in 57,000 teams, picked up an injury in the VFL at the weekend and is unlikely to be recalled for Round 13.

WILLIAMS SET TO MISS AGAIN FOR GIANTS

Bad news for coaches who held onto dashing GWS defender Zac Williams when he was ruled out last week with a hamstring injury. Still in more than 50,000 teams, Williams will not play again this weekend against Gold Coast. However, the Giants are hopeful he could return in Round 12, which would give him two weeks before the club has a bye. The Giants reported their medical staff were ‘optimistic’ Williams would only miss one more week. Meanwhile, Stephen Coniglio is expected to overcome a knock to his knee to feature against the Suns. “He’s been a bit bashed up with his finger and his quad cork but at this stage he looks likely to play,” football manager Wayne Campbell said on Tuesday.

CROUCH STARING AT ANOTHER WEEK ON SIDELINES

Matt Crouch will face a fitness test on Thursday before Adelaide makes a call on whether his injury-enforced lay-off stretches into a third week. The ball magnet has been sidelined with a hip issue for the past two rounds and the Crows reported on Tuesday he had shown improvement. But general manager of high performance Matt Hass told the club website Crouch still had boxes to tick before returning: “It’s the more ballistic, dynamic movements that are the concerns at the moment so he’ll need to tick off those areas to be available,” he said. If ruckman Sam Jacobs gets through training on Thursday, he could also return this weekend, although a week in the SANFL is likely.

ROCKLIFF HEADS TO CHINA BUT NO GUARANTEE TO PLAY

Port Adelaide will take midfielder Tom Rockliff to China after positive scans on his injured hamstring earlier this week. But with both the Power and Saints set to travel with 26 players, late changes for both sides are possible. Rockliff is expected to face a fitness test after Port Adelaide travels, although it is a positive sign he will be on the plane. Young on-ballers Joe Atley and Willem Drew both impressed in the latest round of SANFL and could be in line for a re-call if Rockliff fails to prove his fitness.

BEWLEY IMPRESSES ON DOCKER DEBUT

Fremantle’s mature-age rookie Brett Bewley made an impressive start to his AFL career, showing poise in a tense final quarter and scoring 49 SuperCoach points. If he can reproduce that type of score in Round 11, he’ll be one of the most popular mid-season downgrades of the season after the Dockers have a bye in Round 12. That week off will allow you to pick up Bewley and field him for the last two weeks of the bye rounds to cover premium midfielders who will be missing. “It was some of those kicks he took late in the game. He’s got a terrific kick on him and to be able to pull the trigger one some of those kicks into the corridor in your first game, it was terrific to see,” teammate Brad Hill told Fremantle’s website.

GOODWIN BUOYED BY BAKER’S EARLY RISE

Oskar Baker is set to be one of the most popular bubble boys this week alongside Brisbane Lions defender Mitch Hinge and his form in the past two weeks has pleased coach Simon Goodwin. While Melbourne has several injured players who are due to return in the next month, Baker’s form has won praise from the Demons coach. “There were some good signs today as well. Baker was a sign moving forward and Marty Hore continues to play to a reasonable level,” Goodwin told reporters after the club’s loss to GWS.

MOORE PRESSING TO RETURN FOR MAGPIES

Darcy Moore is set to mount his case to return to Collingwood’s team at training after being out for the past two rounds with an ankle issue. The Magpies said earlier this week they expected to make a final call on Moore’s availability after their main training session, keeping the door ajar for the key defender to tackle Fremantle. “Hopefully he can do enough to also put his hand up for selection. That will be contingent on just how much he can do,” football manager Geoff Walsh told the Magpies website.

SNELLING THE PICK OF MID-SEASON DRAFTEES

New Essendon midfielder Will Snelling ($117,300, Mid) appears the SuperCoach standout of the mid-season draftees after being flagged to fill the role vacated by a season-ending injury to Devon Smith. Snelling, who played one game for Port Adelaide in 2016 for a SuperCoach score of 64, has been posting huge numbers in the SANFL this year, averaging 30.4 disposals and 137 ranking points for West Adelaide. “We think his (Snelling) form stacks up. If he comes over and plays in the top form he’s been in this season, he’ll add some depth to our midfield immediately,” recruiting manager Adrian Dodoro said.

SHAW FLAGS YOUTH FOCUS AS ROOS INTERIM COACH

There could be a few SuperCoach nuggets who emerge during Rhyce Shaw’s tenure as interim coach at North Melbourne after Brad Scott’s replacement flagged a likely youth focus for the remainder of 2019. The Roos have already blooded Bailey Scott, Tarryn Thomas and Curtis Taylor this year, but Shaw said more young players would be given chances to prove themselves during his time in charge. “We’ve been playing the youth this year. We’ll continue in that vein for the rest of the season,” Shaw told reporters on Tuesday after being unveiled.
