Rage Trades: The SuperCoach players on the trade chopping block after Round 4

DOES Jack Billings have to go? How long can we wait for Michael Hibberd to post a hundred? And don’t start on the rookies. Our SuperCoach kneejerk reaction to Round 4.

Rage Trades.
Rage Trades.

ANOTHER round comes to a close and we now get an opportunity to make some rash SuperCoach moves with the security of the ‘reverse trades’ button to fall back on after we settle back down during the week.

JON RALPH: BLUES HAVE LOST HEART, FIGHT

Who’s on the chopping block for your team? Here are our villains (and a few heroes) from Round 4.

BOOT HIM

Jack Billings — Teased us all with a 133 in Round 1 against the Lions, but has averaged only 66 across his three games since and if you have him, it’s probably time to cut your losses.

Michael Hibberd — How long can we persist? I am an owner and considered trading him after Round 1 and my patience is wearing thin after four rounds without a hundred to his name including three scores in the 70s.

Andrew Brayshaw — Many have already traded Brayshaw out, however he is still in 48 per cent of teams. We had hoped for hundreds from him after an impressive pre-season, but it hasn’t eventuated and in Round 4 he only just managed to beat his break-even of 33, which leaves him needing to score his best ever score next week to maintain his current price. Unless you’re prepared for a very slow burn from him, it’s probably time to move him on.

Todd Goldstein — Two poor weeks in a row with Majak Daw in the side. Is this a trend that will continue or will he turn it around next week against Ben McEvoy and the Hawks?

Zac Fisher — Was a popular trade-in target when he was on the bubble after averaging over 100 across the first two rounds, however he has followed that up with a 76 and then a 45 this week, showing a regression to the mean that should have been expected.

Matt Kreuzer — Has failed to score over 86 this season, including just a 60 this week. Has plummeted in price as a result and it might be too late to trade him now, but I bet it would be tempting for his owners.

Rory Sloane — In only 6 per cent of teams, and we know he is capable of mammoth scores such as his 141 in Round 2, but he doesn’t have another hundred and only scored a 59 this week.

Others you should have already traded out who continued to perform poorly this week include Mason Cox, Cyril Rioli, Brandon Ellis, Tom Rockliff and Adam Saad.

BUY HIM

There were a lot of great performances this week, including some who have returned to form after a poorer week last week.

Elliot Yeo — none more so than Yeo with a massive 150 after just a 27 last week. However, the 150 makes it three hundreds from four rounds and that 27 may not drop his price much after all!

Dustin Martin — Also returned to form with a massive 141, making happy all those who had him as their vice-captain.

There was no stopping Dustin Martin against the Lions.

Clayton Oliver — Last week’s 75 looks to be an aberration due to being tagged by North Melbourne’s Ben Jacobs, as his other three scores have been 123, 146 and then a 128 this week.

James Sicily — Started the season with a bang in Round 1, and then had a characteristically dramatic Round 2 with a low score and a suspension, but has returned in Round 4 with a solid 110.

Robbie Gray — What a hot start to the season after being suspended in Round 1, now averaging almost 120 across his three games.

Brodie Grundy — In amazing form and Mason Cox’s presence hasn’t slowed him at all with scores of 95, 139, 154 and now 141 across the four rounds so far to be one of the highest scorers in the game this year!

There are some others who have continued their hot start to the season but are probably out of reach now, including Stephen Coniglio, Jaeger O’Meara, Toby McLean and Shane Savage.

BENCH CALLS

A few rookies were excellent as always, such as Tim English (78), Lachie Fogarty (80), Tim Kelly (89), Sam Murray (92) and Jeremy Finlayson (101) and should have been on the field in all teams, however some other usually solid options had a down week, such as Nick Holman (32), Zac Fisher (45), Jack Henry (46) and Riley Bonner (60).

There were a few rookies you could have been excused for leaving out, who turned out some unexpectedly good performances such as David Mirra (77), Aaron Naughton (78), Cam Rayner (97), and Jaidyn Stephenson (115); and there were others who should be locked to the pine by now given their consistent low scoring. They include Aliir Aliir (32), Adam Cerra (34), Luke Davies-Uniacke (37), Patty Dow (41), Andrew Brayshaw (42), Darcy Fogarty (44), Cam O’Shea (45) and Willie Rioli (48).

Most other rookies had average weeks including Bayley Fritsch (58), Dan Venables (61), Jake Waterman (61), Mitch Crowden (61), Ed Richards (67) and Bailey Banfield (69).

NAILED IT?

There were two uninspiring predictions from the Thursday night SuperCoaches Box podcast this week:

More unsuccessful SuperCoach predictions.
More unsuccessful SuperCoach predictions.

Gilbert Gardiner: Todd Goldstein to score at least 142 — FAILED IT. Goldy has dropped off a bit since Majak Daw came into the side last week, and on Saturday opposing No. 1 ruckmen Kreuzer and Goldstein cancelled each other out, both scoring poorly, with Goldstein not even achieving half of Gil’s very precise prediction of 142.

Ben Higgins: Buddy to score at least 130 v Dogs — FAILED IT. Buddy had a decent game, but he didn’t quite reach the 10-goal haul that Higgo predicted and fell short of the 130 score by 32 points.
