Not unlike cryptocurrency, the Brisbane Lions have SuperCoach upside for those willing to take the risk

THE Brisbane Lions could be to SuperCoach what Bitcoin is to cryptocurrency with several high risk-high reward options. Gilbert Gardiner runs his eye over the players to watch.

THE Brisbane Lions are to SuperCoach what Bitcoins are to cryptocurrency.

While risky and volatile on face value, the Lions pose significant upside in fantasy land — where the rewards could be astronomical for the astute miner.

IT’S A TRAP: WILL YOU TAKE THE RISK ON GAZ, ROCKY?

GET MEAN: FAGAN’S PLAN TO TOUGHEN UP LIONS

The Lions’ blockchain (or SuperCoach Gold for those without a crypto currency glossary) reveals a wealth of opportunity and potential across the price spectrum.

Meet the Bitcoin Lions:

DAYNE BEAM (Mid, $557,600)

2017 AVERAGE: 101

Yes, the Lions captain has battled with injuries in recent seasons but his ability in close - where all the points are scored - must not be underestimated. With luck, Beams, a proven goalkicker and ball magnet, could be in the conversation for top-10 SuperCoach scorers at the end of the season.

LUKE HODGE (Def, $461,800)

2017 AVERAGE: 84

Hodge needs no introduction. The four-time premiership Hawk has slotted in seamlessly at the Lions and already his impact has been profound on young backline. Lions coach Chris Fagan will be hoping to get upwards of 18 games out of the 305-game champion and that bodes well for SuperCoach owners. Must be considered, especially in the first half of the season. Happy to risk young Lion Alex Witherden ($478.900) at the price.

HUGH McCLUGGAGE (Mid-Fwd, $297,800)

2017 AVERAGE: 54

Awkwardly priced but the No.3 pick will be better for the 18 games he played last season and the second AFL pre-season. Has filled out nicely and looks set for big season.

CAMERON RAYNER (Mid-Fwd, $202,800)

Yet to debut, 2017 draft No.1 pick

Big, strong and explosive, Rayner will be among the first picked in 2020 SuperCoach teams. But for now, the Western Jets product - likened to Dustin Martin and Christian Petracca - is untouchable at the price. Will spend the bulk of his time forward where he faces stiff competition from experienced campaigners Mitch Robinson and Allen Christensen for minutes.

ZAC BAILEY (Mid, $139,800)

Yet to debut, 2017 draft No.15 pick

Spent two days with the Lions in Launceston and kept hearing Bailey’s name in midfield conversations. The Territorian has genuine pace and an appetite for the contest, monitor closely during AFLX and the JLT Community Series.

BRANDON STARCEVICH (Mid-Fwd, $126,300)

Yet to debut, 2017 draft No.18 pick

Like Bailey, Starcevich has not put a foot wrong in his first AFL pre-season. A contested ball beast, the young Lion is up to his eyeballs in a three-way battle (with Rayner and Bailey) for that prized forward-midfield spot.

CHARLIE CAMERON (Fwd, $372,500)

2017 AVERAGE: 67

Lots of money to spend on someone with a career average of 63 but Cameron biggest weapons — speed and intensity — are exactly what the Lions need in the midfield around contested bulls Dayne Beams and Dayne Zorko. One to watch closely in pre-season games where any midfield minutes should spark a buyer frenzy

ALLEN CHRISTENSEN (Fwd, $267,300)

2017 AVERAGE : -

He’s back and hungry to perform. It is to forget Christensen averaged a tick under 90 SuperCoach points in 2013-15 before collarbone injuries robbed the electric forward the chance to play football. Suspect he’ll spend more time forward but capable of putting up big numbers in midfield bursts.
