KFC SuperCoach announces rules for postponed and catch-up matches in 2020 season
KFC SuperCoach players were thrown into a spin when Essendon’s clash against Melbourne was postponed. Now new rules have been announced for how scoring will work when the Bombers and Demons play their catch-up game.

Like all KFC SuperCoaches, we’ve been thrown into a spin.
The news of Conor McKenna’s positive COVID-19 test and subsequent postponement of Sunday’s Essendon-Melbourne fixture resulted in changes to Australia’s favourite fantasy game.
We’ve tried to make it as fair as possible for those who have selected Essendon and Melbourne players and were impacted by the last-minute change.
For Round 3 SuperCoach reverted to best 18 scoring which has been used during bye rounds and in 2015 when the Geelong-Adelaide fixture was cancelled after the death of Crows coach Phil Walsh.
In this case, Melbourne and Essendon will play their postponed game later in the season so a solution was required to factor those scores into KFC SuperCoach. This is how it will work for this game — and if this scenario happens again during this crazy 2020 season.
KFC SUPERCOACH SCORING CHANGES EXPLAINED
With the remaining uncertainty around how the rest of the AFL season plays out and fixtures only being released in small blocks, we will continue to remain agile and adapt as the season dictates to keep the competition going. With a great deal of unknowns and uncertainty, we will continue with a consistent approach for as much as any situation allows.
The Essendon v Melbourne catch-up game is now expected to be played later in the season. We will include it in the round that it is played closest to — meaning that Essendon and Melbourne will likely play twice in a round. If this is the case, your team will receive the benefit of the HIGHEST of the two scores that any player achieves from either match. If your selected player/s plays only once, you will receive that score.
So if Max Gawn scores 90 in the first match and 130 in the second match, the second score will be his KFC SuperCoach score for the round — or 260 if you have him as captain.

If we are faced with further match cancellations or postponements in any round — or at least where one or more teams are unavailable in a round — the game will immediately revert to Best 18 scoring to minimise the impact. While we hope that this information is at hand as early as possible to assist with planning, the unpredictable circumstances may mean that this can happen at any time — including mid-round as was the case in Round 3.
Most importantly, to the best of our ability under the circumstances thrown up, we will continue to operate a fantasy competition the way it is intended, scoring points based on REAL, upcoming player performances. We will not revert to awarding any predetermined, known scores such as projections or season averages if there are further cancellations - and produce the possibility to manipulate and “fix” team scores by selecting players with known points ahead of time, whether this happens prior to the round staring or during a rolling lockout.
Note that we intend to apply the above Best 18 and double match scoring ruling consistently in a situation where the season may need to be compressed at any point and matches don’t play out in a traditional round format (where every team plays once), and games are played out daily or midweek. However, we are still in the middle of an unprecedented pandemic with no certainties and plenty of unpredictability.
We promised that we’ll continue to adapt as circumstances require and more changes may indeed be required — whether they are structural, the possibility of additional trades, or increasing round-to-round trade limits should the season need to be compressed or play out differently. We will provide ample notice as any situation allows.
NEW RULES FOR KFC SUPERCOACH DRAFT
We will apply the same “highest scoring” ruling for the Essendon v Melbourne catch-up match and any other circumstance where a team plays twice in a determined round. For all league commissioners, remember that you can tweak your league settings and trading rules at any time (waiver length, trade approval processes) to allow as much flexibility within your leagues.
Furthermore, each league commissioner will have the ability to ‘void’ a round that is impacted by match cancellations, or where any team does not play for any reason. Simply contact us via the link on the game to request it. Note that this may be applied retrospectively for Round 3.
