This man is one of three Magpies to produce breathtaking KFC SuperCoach scores on ANZAC Day. Who are the other two, and did any of the three win the medal for their efforts?

KFC SuperCoach TV episode 2

With no week-to-week KFC SuperCoach action to feast on, we have been reliving the best – and the worst – SuperCoach performances from that respective round in history.

There are sure to be a host of classic names that will give you your footy and SuperCoach nostalgia fix.

As Round 5 is slated to be played this weekend, we bring you the most rousing fifth round SuperCoach displays of all-time.

BEST FIFTH ROUND SCORES

Superstar Gary Ablett is edging closer to becoming a SuperCoach Hall of Fame member, and his colossal score in Round 5 of 2008 is forever etched into our memories.

To this day, the Little Master’s 251 SuperCoach points against Sydney at Kardinia Park is the highest score ever recorded in the AFL competition under the current scoring model – where each game’s cumulative total adds up to 3300.

If there was any week to have Ablett captain, it was this one. Everything GAJ touched turned to gold, registering 35 disposals, 20 contested possessions, nine clearances, 18 score involvements and three goals.

I recall having Ablett vice-captain that week in the days before rolling lockout – a decision I still live with today.

Will this record ever be broken? Considering even the superstars of the past decade have failed to break it – not even Gazza himself – it may be a height that is never achieved again.

The champion went on to average 132 points for the season, surpassing the 150-point mark another six times.

In the very same game as Ablett’s record-breaking total, Jimmy Bartel registered 27 disposals, 10 tackles, two goals and 179 points, the third most damaging fifth round score.

There is a Geelong flavour to the best Round 5 scores of all-time, with Patrick Dangerfield joining Gary Ablett and Jimmy Bartel in the top-three.

Playing for former club Adelaide, Dangerfield dined out against a lacklustre GWS outfit back in 2014, amassing 33 disposals, 18 contested possessions, nine clearances, 13 score involvements, five goals and 192 points. Not a bad day at the office.

Of the top-10 totals, Pies duo Dane Swan (equal third highest, 179), Leon Davis (seventh, 175) and Scott Pendlebury (tenth, 170) serve as the most significant given they were all posted on ANZAC DAY. Dane Swan’s massive 42 disposals and three goals earnt him the 2012 ANZAC DAY medal.

Pendlebury and Davis were both overlooked for the prize in 2009 despite amassing 170-plus totals.

Norm Smith medallist Lenny Hayes (178) and fellow Sam Fisher (176) also feature in the fifth Round top-10, posting their scores in the same game against the Power in Round 5, 2009.

And it’s no surprise to see SuperCoach greats Josh P. Kennedy (173) Lance Franklin (172) rank inside the top-10.

SURPRISE ROUND 5 SCORE

Chris Mayne (Fremantle) – 155 SuperCoach points vs Melbourne, Round 5 2015

Before his role as a loping wingman for Collingwood, Chris Mayne was a goalkicking presence for the Dockers. But he has never been relevant for SuperCoaches.

That’s why his score of 155 points against Melbourne in the fifth round of 2015 would have even shocked himself. Mayne finished with 18 disposals, nine marks, four goals and an impressive 12 tackles in a very well rounded game.

ROUND 5 SHOCKERS

Ryan Crowley (Fremantle) – 0 SuperCoach points vs Western Bulldogs, Round 5 2011

This was a small win for SuperCoaches who had their weekend’s ruined regularly by Ryan ‘creepy’ Crowley. Tasked with a forward tagging role on Robert Murphy, the super-stopper had eyes only for his opponent in this encounter. Crowley tallied just two disposals and one tackle from 84 per cent game-time, finishing with a big-fat doughnut to his name. In his direct match-up on Murphy for 75 minutes, Crowley kept him to 16 disposals. Murphy scored just 45 SuperCoach points for the match.

This Freo-Bulldogs clash was a game for SuperCoach stinkers, with ageing goalkicker Barry Hall struggling against opponent Luke McPharlin at the other end. Hall managed just five disposals and 11 points in total, despite spending the exact same amount of time on ground as Crowley.

Round 5, 2011 was a day to forget for Barry Hall.
