KFC SuperCoach Round 16 trade guide: Best options to finish your team

Lachie Neale’s sidekick in the Brisbane midfield and a star Giant building into form are two players who could give your KFC SuperCoach team a big boost. Plus all of the top premium targets in our Round 16 trade guide.

KFC SuperCoach 2020: Round 16 trade guide
KFC SuperCoach 2020: Round 16 trade guide

With trades dwindling and premiums being managed, KFC SuperCoaches face a juggling act during the run home.

League finals resume in Round 16 and whether you’re chasing glory against your mates or rankings immortality, time is running out to stake your claim.

Brave SuperCoaches will roll the dice and burn their last trades this round or next, hoping for a clear run to the end of the home-and-away season.

It’s a risky strategy but one which paid handsome dividends for last year’s overall winner Dwayne Delmenico.

Richmond and Collingwood have a Round 16 bye, although most coaches will have little trouble fielding a team of premiums for best 18 scoring.

Brodie Grundy and Dustin Martin are the only players from those clubs in more than 50 per cent of KFC SuperCoach teams.

Round 15 was tough, with six teams and a host of popular trade targets having their rest.

But that only means the opportunities to bolster your team for the run home will be plentiful in Round 16.

Hopefully you have enough trades left to take advantage.

Caleb Daniel has been a consistent defensive scorer this year.
Caleb Daniel has been a consistent defensive scorer this year.

TOP TARGETS

Caleb Daniel $469,500 DEF Avg: 99.7

Crazy to think a player with Daniel’s consistency is available this cheap. The Western Bulldogs quarterback has seven tons this season in 14 matches and six other scores between 83-95. Daniel doesn’t possess the huge ceiling other defenders such as Jake Lloyd, Luke McDonald or Jordan Ridley do, but he’s as reliable as they come and does’t need big possession numbers to amass points thanks to his precise kicking. He’s gone at 81.4 per cent efficiency by foot this year.

Marcus Bontempelli $670,000 MID Avg: 114.3

He’s at the top of his price cycle due to his 199 against Adelaide in Round 12, but there’s no questioning the barnstorming form the Western Bulldogs skipper has been in. His last five scores have been 114, 138, 199, 135 and 122 — an average of 141.6. If he continues at that scoring rate, Bontempelli could be the difference between success in a league final in the next three rounds, when Western Bulldogs face West Coast, Hawthorn and Fremantle. The Hawks’ clash, in particular, appears primed for Bontempelli to dominate in the same vein he did against the Crows.

Hugh Greenwood has been one of the best KFC SuperCoach forwards of the season.
Hugh Greenwood has been one of the best KFC SuperCoach forwards of the season.

Hugh Greenwood $499,000 FWD-MID Avg: 104.5

The only player with more than 80 tackles to Round 15 (103), Greenwood has been a revelation in his first season with Gold Coast. The tough on-baller had a top average of 86 in three seasons with Adelaide but has averaged 104.5 points a game this campaign. He has 11 scores of at least 95 in 14 games and has scored 116 or more in five matches. At less than $500,000, he’s set to be one of this round’s most-popular targets as many KFC SuperCoaches look to round out their forward lines.

Travis Boak $535,800 MID Avg: 107.3

While not available for the bargain $462,600 he was in Round 11, Boak is still more than $40,000 cheaper than his starting price ahead of Round 16. After being carefully managed in the middle of the campaign, the Port Adelaide midfielder has rocketed back into form with scores of 129, 97, 148 and 116. He’s averaged 27 disposals during that stretch and most significantly played at least 76 per cent of game time. His time on ground was as low as 70 per cent in Round 10 against Western Bulldogs when he scored 67 points.

Jack Steele continues to post massive SuperCoach numbers during a breakout season.
Jack Steele continues to post massive SuperCoach numbers during a breakout season.

Jack Steele $600,300 MID Avg: 121.4

The breakout Saint is $70,000 cheaper than Bontempelli and has averaged seven points more this season. Steele has 10 hundreds in 14 matches — which have all been scores of at least 114. He’s had one of the highest ceilings of any midfielder this year, topping 150 three times and 120 eight times. Despite these numbers, he’s still only in 15 per cent of teams and could be the premium addition who launches you into a KFC SuperCoach preliminary final.

Touk Miller $518,200 MID Avg: 107.2

The ultimate POD selection this week — as he has been for much of the season. Miller has been an unsung hero of the Suns midfield and overlooked by 98 per cent of SuperCoach teams. He’s only had one score of less than 80 and will have a crucial role to play as Gold Coast tries to finish its season on a high against Brisbane Lions, Collingwood and Hawthorn. He’s had lockdown jobs before and could get Lachie Neale, Taylor Adams and Tom Mitchell in the Suns’ remaining games which would ensure he’s close to the footy.

Jy Simpkin $438,000 FWD-MID Avg: 94.8

Cash generation has been tough this season and many KFC SuperCoaches won’t have the money spare to target uber premiums in Round 16. That’s where value options such as Simpkin become appealing. His form has been mixed since a dominant opening six rounds, during which he averaged 119. But he’s hit triple figures in three of his past five matches and continued to rack up encouraging numbers despite North Melbourne’s woes. He’s already in 29 per cent of teams but if you were waiting until post-bye, now is the time to grab him.

Luke McDonald’s SuperCoach stocks have soared in the past month.
Luke McDonald’s SuperCoach stocks have soared in the past month.

Luke McDonald $563,700 DEF Avg: 91.9

Only three defenders — Jake Lloyd, Luke Ryan and Rory Laird — have averaged more points than McDonald in their past five games. His three-game streak of hundreds was brought to a halt in Round 14 by a 94 — although it’s worth noting he spent the first quarter-and-a-half in a lockdown role on Izak Rankine and scored poorly. Since getting as low as $338k, McDonald has posted scores of 122, 136, 95, 138, 119, 114 and 94. Those are phenomenal numbers for a player relishing greater freedom as an outlet from halfback in a team whose defence is under regular pressure.

Tom Stewart $497,900 DEF Avg: 95.2

Stewart is one of the most-reliable players in KFC SuperCoach and has a standard deviation of about 16 points with six scores between 100-119 in 11 matches. Two of his other scores were an injury-affected 18 and a season-high 145. He doesn’t regularly score those big numbers, but is the type of player coaches love in their teams. You can bank on a minimum of 80 and likely score of 90-110 from him every round due to a combination of kick-outs, intercept possessions (4.5 a game) and kicking efficiency (84.7 per cent).

Robbie Gray’s past five games have him back on the SuperCoach radar.
Robbie Gray’s past five games have him back on the SuperCoach radar.

Robbie Gray $465,700 FWD-MID Avg: 88.6

Gray has surged back into KFC SuperCoach relevance in the past month and ranks fifth of this year’s forwards with a five-round average of 109.2. He’s considerably cheaper than those ahead of him (Tom Hawkins, Lachie Whitfield, Christian Petracca and Andrew Brayshaw as of Round 15). He’s also got battling North Melbourne in Round 16 before games against Essendon and Collingwood to round out the home-and-away season. Gray’s DPP could also come in handy if you’re low on trades.

Patrick Dangerfield $576,400 MID Avg: 111.5

Dangerfield’s scoring hasn’t suffered significantly from spending greater time in attack with six scores of 117 or higher in his last eight matches. His ability to impact games in bursts in the middle has attracted plenty of points this year and he’s still averaging 5.1 clearances a game (compared to 5.7 last season). Dangerfield has stated he’s determined not to be rested and the Cats have attractive fixtures against Essendon and Sydney in their last three.

Max Gawn $668,400 RUC Avg: 141

Nic Naitanui has dropped below $600k and coaches planning on trading him back to Gawn will be desperate to make it happen this round. Naitanui only played 59 per cent game time against Essendon and didn’t get close to his 130 break even, scoring 72. Gawn returned from knee and shoulder issues in Round 14 against St Kilda, sending an immediate reminder of his SuperCoach credentials with 135 points. The Demons skipper has games against Fremantle (Sean Darcy), GWS (Shane Mumford/Sam Jacobs) and Essendon (Sam Draper) to come. He could post sky-high numbers in that stretch.

Jarryd Lyons doesn’t get the same plaudits as Lachie Neale but has enjoyed a standout campaign.
Jarryd Lyons doesn’t get the same plaudits as Lachie Neale but has enjoyed a standout campaign.

Jarryd Lyons $575,300 MID Avg: 114.6

After hitting $611,200 in Round 13, the unheralded Lyons, who is in just three per cent of teams, was projected to be about $555k for Round 16 (before Brisbane’s clash with Collingwood). While Lachie Neale has taken many of the plaudits and been crunched into Brownlow Medal favouritism, Lyons averaged 10 contested possessions, five clearances and five tackles to Round 15. That’s gold from a KFC SuperCoach midfielder and also three key reasons he had an average of 112.8 to Round 15.

Andrew Gaff $525,500 MID Avg: 104.9

Gaff has recaptured his prolific form from the start of the season since returning to Queensland and will jump to about $525k after a score of 115 against Essendon. That followed a 137 and lifted his five-round average since West Coast’s bye to 109.4 with a low of 94. He was available for 50k cheaper in Round 13 but don’t let that put you off. While other players are being managed to the finish line Gaff is powering to finals, featuring in 295 of a possible 297 minutes in the past three rounds.

Nick Haynes $502,500 DEF Avg: 107

Looking for a well-priced D6 to finish your side? The Giants’ intercept king is your man. Haynes is the second-ranked KFC SuperCoach defender and bounced back to his best with a 139-point performance against the Blues in Round 15 – his first KFC SuperCoach ton since Round 10. And the Crows – GWS’ opponent on Tuesday - aren’t exactly the most-precise team going forward.

Toby Greene $439,000 FWD Avg: 90.2

The match-up with Adelaide makes Haynes’ teammate an appealing option. Especially after the star Giant - owned by just six per cent of KFC SuperCoaches - attended 10 centre bounces against the Blues and tallied 19 disposals, seven marks, six score involvements, 1.2 and 105 KFC SuperCoach points. If the Giants get on top, look out.

Matt Crouch $590,300 MID Avg: 109.4

Forget what Crouch has done to you in the past – or even earlier this year when he scored 68 in the season-opener and was dropped in Round 4. The Adelaide ball magnet is back to his best, recording a competition-high 162 points against the Hawks, taking his three-round average to a huge 142. Crouch, who is in just one per cent of teams, is averaging 27 disposals, 11 contested possessions, seven tackles, five clearances and 128 KFC SuperCoach points since Round 9.

Josh Kennedy $435,000 MID Avg: 92.4

He’s no longer available for a ridiculous $417k but thanks to the injury-affected 18-point score in Round 16, the star midfielder is still available for $140k less than his starting price. And that’s despite scores of 84, 96 and 110 since returning in Round 13. Kennedy has posted a KFC SuperCoach ton is in his past three against the Blues and is still a great M8 option if you’re short on cash.
