KFC SuperCoach: Experts rate the big trade moves for Round 11

The KFC SuperCoach experts are making key moves to set up their teams for the byes. See who they are buying plus full trade grades.

KFC SuperCoach: Round 10 Hot & Cold

The AFL fixture has been thrown into chaos but the KFC SuperCoach show goes on.

And there are important KFC SuperCoach decisions to be made just a week out from the dreaded bye rounds.

Is it time to jump off several starting rookies?

Should we bring in a pair of promising cheapies?

Our panel of KFC SuperCoach experts reveal their Round 11 moves and weigh in on this week’s most traded players.

TIM MICHELL

My trades: Tom Powell and James Jordon to Jack Steele and Isaac Heeney

I banked some cash last week hoping I could double up this week — does Heeney count as an upgrade or technically a downgrade? Regardless, I think he is worth the risk at that price considering his role further up the ground in the past two weeks. Most KFC SuperCoaches will have a spare 4-5 trades to cover injuries late in the season so I can potentially offload Heeney if he’s managed. That’s the hope, at least.

I am torn on whether to grab Zach Merrett or Jack Steele this week but am leaning towards the Saints co-captain as he has North Melbourne and Adelaide in his next three. Of course, that could change completely if we go to best 18 scoring when I think a double downgrade to Cody Weightman and James Madden would need to be considered. Anthony Scott’s omission means he can he held for one more week.

Isaac Heeney is a high-risk, high-reward KFC SuperCoach option.

AL PATON

My trades: Anthony Scott and Tom Powell to James Madden and Jack Steele

I held onto Powell last week hoping his score in the 40s was an aberration but after another sub-50 return his break even is up to 115 and he has to be traded to make the most of the value he gained over an exceptional first eight rounds.

Anthony Scott is also ready to go after losing money last round (although his value won’t change this week). The value from that pair will be enough to get Steele, who is a great price for a player who has averaged 112 and has lots of upside ... but only if I take Lions rookie Madden. I think Cody Weightman is a better bet for on-field scoring and job security but that extra $50k is gold.

THE PHANTOM

My trades: Tom Powell to Jordan Ridley (via Rory Laird), Anthony Scott/Chad Warner to Cody Weightman/James Madden

Like Al, I held Tom Powell last week and traded Miles Bergman instead. But now is the time before he drops further. The Hunter Clark injury throws a spanner in the works but I will likely proceed as planned. And that’s trading in a bottomed-out Ridley for Powell this week, before swinging Laird back into defence by trading Clark to a premium midfielder - maybe Lachie Neale - ahead of Round 14. I’d love to dump Anthony Scott but to make the Powell to Ridley move work, I would need to go with Madden. But for job security reasons, and on-field scoring, I’d like to go with Weightman - and that’s where Warner comes in. And that’s the way I’ll probably go.

DAN BATTEN

My trades: Chad Warner and Anthony Scott to Sam Walsh and Cody Weightman

I knew from the first half of the Richmond-Carlton season-opener that I needed to bring Walsh into my KFC SuperCoach team. With $200k in the bank before trades, I can’t stand to have him out of my side any longer, even with his Round 13 bye still to come.

I am able to get from Warner to Walsh while still nabbing Weightman, who looks to have greater job security and scoring potential than James Madden. The Lion was exceptional against Richmond, but I question whether his score of 78 – featuring a goal and four intercept marks – is his ceiling. I will need all the on-field scorers I can get in Round 13 and 14, and I’m unsure whether I can bank on Madden being available.

TRADE GRADES: MOST TRADED OUT

ANTHONY SCOTT $281,700 MID/FWD

AP: TRADE — Let’s take a moment to acknowledge what a great servant he’s been after being recruited from the VFL as a $102k rookie and playing every game. But it’s time to say goodbye.

TM: TRADE — No guarantee to play this week after experiencing blurred vision and has a break even of 93. Only going to lose money this week and you would offload him in Round 13 anyway.

The Phantom: TRADE — After the blurred vision-affected 18, Scott’s break even is up to 93. If it gives you enough cash, turn him into teammate Cody Weightman.

JAMES JORDON $366,100 MID

AP: HOLD — I’m hoping to carry him through to the Demons’ Round 14 bye. Hopefully he doesn’t lose too much value in that time.

TM: HOLD — Running out of gas and might get squeezed out of the Demons team in coming weeks. But if he doesn’t he is going to provide valuable cover until Round 14. That’s when I would move him on, not now.

TP: HOLD — Didn’t get as much of the ball but still applied nine tackles against the Crows. No problem with upgrading him but he’s a better chance to hold his value than a few others.

TOM POWELL $350,600 MID

AP: TRADE — I held him last week hoping his 45 in Round 10 was an aberration and copped a $25k price drop. Get off now before he crashes again.

TM: TRADE — I got stuck with him last week and am ruing it. His CBAs were still high but his output hasn’t been there the past few weeks. Time to cut him loose.

TP: TRADE — Break even is even higher this week — 116 — and he struggled, again, in Round 10 despite plenty of centre bounces. Upgrade him with the byes in mind.

CHAD WARNER $315,900 FWD

AP: HOLD/TRADE — Happy to hold him until Sydney’s bye but if he’s your only path to a superstar I wouldn’t say no.

TM: HOLD — Like Jordon, he has the Round 14 bye. He’s consistently scoring close to 60 which will be valuable in rounds 12 and 13.

TP: TRADE/HOLD — Warner made it four consecutive scores between 58 and 61 and, like he has for the past month, took a minor price hit. Break even is steady and his role is still there so he’s unlikely to fall dramatically. But he’s ready to be traded if you need.

Changkuoth Jiath (left) couldn’t keep up his elite scoring of the early rounds.
Changkuoth Jiath (left) couldn’t keep up his elite scoring of the early rounds.

CHANGKUOTH JIATH $393,000 DEF

AP: HOLD — Can’t see him hitting his 118 break even but deal with your rookies first. Could go leading into the Hawks’ Round 12 bye.

TM: HOLD — Losing value but I wouldn’t bother cashing him in this week. He’s got the Round 12 bye which is when I would make the call on whether to trade him.

TP: HOLD — If you’re set on trading, at least give him another week before the Hawks’ bye. I’ll need him in Rounds 13 and 14 — and his scoring potential is still there — so it’s a hold for me.

JACOB KOSCHITZKE $277,300 DEF

AP: TRADE — His break even of 43 is gettable but he’s not going to make much more cash and Lions rookie James Madden presents a chance to cash him in for a tidy profit.

TM: HOLD — Trade him in Round 12 when he has the bye. Unless you’re moving him to Madden this week.

TP: HOLD — Should get his break even of 43 this week and he’ll be handy in the final two bye rounds, if you can find another rookie to trade.

ERROL GULDEN $282,900 MID

AP: TRADE — Having rookies who will play during the byes is crucial so there no point hanging onto Gulden, who won’t play for 5-6 weeks.

TM: TRADE — People still have him?

TP: TRADE — Don’t waste the money or the bench spot over the bye rounds.

MILES BERGMAN $272,100 FWD

AP: HOLD — Most teams will have cover for Port’s bye in Round 12, hopefully he gets a game in Round 13 or 14.

TM: HOLD — Unless he’s named as the sub again.

TP: HOLD/TRADE — Didn’t come on as the medical sub so his price and break even are still intact. Hold if he comes back in.

Orazio Fantasia started the season with a bang.
Orazio Fantasia started the season with a bang.

ORAZIO FANTASIA $284,000 DEF/FWD

AP: TRADE — Put this down as a failed mid-pricer (has increased in value by $12k since Round 1). You could cash him in to another DEF/MID in James Madden.

TM: TRADE — Didn’t realise there are KFC SuperCoaches out there with him. Two of his past three scores are under 40.

TP: TRADE — If you are looking OK for Rounds 13 and 14, dump him now.

BRAEDEN CAMPBELL $235,800 MID/FWD

AP: TRADE — I’m scratching around for any rookie with value to cash in. He’s not playing so make use of the money.

TM: TRADE — Won’t play again until after his bye due to injury. The only reason to hold would be if you’re using him as a loophole.

TP: TRADE — As per Gulden verdict. You’ll need the cash and the bench cover over the next month.

MOST TRADED IN

JAMES MADDEN $123,900 DEF/FWD

AP: BUY — Rookie outlook looks pretty bleak for the next few weeks and he’s a solid option with DPP flexibility.

TM: BUY — His job security will likely be an issue but the DEF/FWD status will help with trades. He looked accomplished against Richmond and Chris Fagan isn’t averse to playing the kids.

TP: BUY/PASS — If you need the cash, go with the Lion, who scored 78 points last week. But Brisbane has a few to come back over the next fortnight so his job security is a concern.

CODY WEIGHTMAN $173,100 FWD

AP: BUY — If you can afford him. Probably has better job security than Madden but that extra $50k prices me out of a true premium upgrade, so I’m going with the Irishman.

TM: BUY — Weightman has earned at least another few weeks in the Bulldogs forward line after having 11 score involvements against St Kilda. He’s likely to find it much tougher against Melbourne’s watertight defence though.

TP: BUY — He’s more expensive but Weightman’s place in the Bulldogs side appears more secure. And, even though he’s a small forward, he looks a more reliable scorer in that team — especially after posting scores of 80, 116 and 82 in the VFL before breaking back in.

CLAYTON OLIVER $652,900 MID

AP: BUY — Price is still OK value given his recent scoring, but check how many players you’ll have missing in Round 14 first.

TM: BUY — Don’t expect another double ton but he’s one of the most consistent scorers in KFC SuperCoach.

TP: BUY/PASS — With a break even of 45, this will be the cheapest Oliver will be for a while. It’s a lot to pay but I’d still consider it if he didn’t share the Round 14 bye with half of my side.

ISAAC HEENEY $347,000 FWD

AP: PASS — I can see a world where this works out and Heeney averages 95 for the rest of the year. But I can’t afford to burn any more trades if he breaks down again.

TM: BUY — But only if you’re prepared to burn a second trade replacing him. His durability is a big worry.

TP: PASS — He was good again last week, and the price is crazy. But the ankle soreness from two weeks ago still scares me. I won’t be going there.

JORDAN RIDLEY $484,600 DEF

AP: BUY — Doesn’t seem to have the ceiling of the early rounds any more but you’re getting one of the most reliable defenders for $100k less than I paid for him.

TM: PASS — He’s cheap but there’s better options in defence now he’s sharing kick-outs with Mason Redman.

TP: BUY — His second KFC SuperCoach ton since the concussion against the Lions and he looks to have bottomed out completely in price. Coming in for me this week.

Dayne Zorko and the Lions are flying.
Dayne Zorko and the Lions are flying.

DAYNE ZORKO $536,400 FWD/MID

AP: BUY — One of the few forwards we can rely on each week.

TM: BUY — Destined to be a top-two forward. My only concern this week is Callan Ward might run with him.

TP: BUY — Zorko made it five KFC SuperCoach tons in the past six matches in Round 10 and is the clear No.2 forward behind Jack Ziebell. Get on now before his price jumps again.

CALEB POULTER $228,400 MID/FWD

AP: PASS — Looks great for a first-year player, but he’s already gone up more than $100k.

TM: PASS — You missed the boat here.

TP: PASS — He was very good against the Power, and he’ll make a fair bit of money from here, but I think you’ve missed the boat.

BAILEY DALE $479,900 FWD

AP: PASS — How many Bulldogs can you pick? Round 13 bye could catch a few unawares.

TM: BUY — It’s time we classed Dale as the real deal. I can’t see him repeating his Round 10 heroics again but kick-outs will ensure he has a base of about 85-90 points a game.

TP: BUY/PASS — Has averaged 25 disposals, 521 metres gained, six score involvements and 101 KFC SuperCoach points since Round 2 — numbers which are hard to ignore. But three of his top four scores have come in big wins. Not 100 per cent sold just yet.

JACK STEELE $563,000 MID

AP: BUY — Likely to be joining Don’t Argue this week. Expecting the Saints to show something this week.

TM: BUY — Plays North Melbourne this week and although he hasn’t hit the heights of last year, he still boasts one of the best averages of any midfielder in KFC SuperCoach.

TP: BUY — If you can afford to have another Round 14 premium.

JACK MACRAE $621,500 MID

AP: BUY — Underpriced for the third-highest scoring player in the game.

TM: BUY — It’s never a bad week to get Macrae.

TP: BUY— Never a bad time, really. He’s cheaper than Bontempelli and Lyons, despite scoring more points this year.
