The week between trade guides really is a long time in KFC SuperCoach.

With dwindling trades, and recent injuries to Lachie Neale, Sam Docherty and Jarman Impey acting as a warning, many KFC SuperCoaches were last week happy running with the likes of Callum Coleman-Jones and Tom Highmore on-field.

Those who copped all three injuries had no choice.

But after Coleman-Jones was subbed out of the game with five points to this name on Thursday night, and Highmore struggled to have any real influence, KFC SuperCoaches are scrambling to find ways to finish their team.

The good news is, there are a few bargains on offer – this round and next.

DEFENDERS

Jordan Ridley (Ess) $495,200

3-round average: 110
Ridley’s price is well-and-truly on the way back up now after a third consecutive KFC SuperCoach ton against Melbourne. But he’s still good buying at less than $500k. A week after recording a season-high 28 disposals, the reigning Bombers best-and-fairest finished with season-highs for intercepts (11) and intercept marks (5) in the loss to the Cats. He’s back.

Christian Salem (Melb) $489,500

3-round average: 110
Salem is the 20th-most expensive defender in KFC SuperCoach but he’s only one of eight players to boast a three-figure average this season. The skilful Demon is averaging 105 points per game since Round 4, despite two quiet outings against the Bulldogs and Lions.

Nic Newman (Carl) $428,700

3-round average: 89
Our friend at Champion Data, Fantasy Freako, reminded us pre-game that Newman averaged 22 disposals, seven marks and 96 KFC SuperCoach points when Sam Docherty was out of the side in 2019. Then, following on from a season-high 99 against the Crows a week earlier, Newman finished with 24 disposals – 23 of them kicks – 11 marks and 106 points on Saturday night. After missing the first half of the year through injury Newman is building – and the Docherty injury should see him win even more footy across half-back.

Wait a week on …

Tom Stewart (Geel) $533,200
Breakeven: 148, Average: 105

He’s not as cheap as some, but with that 58-point score still in his three-round rolling average, Stewart faces another high breakeven of 148 in Round 17. The star Cat bounced back with 107 points against the Bombers but still lost $16k off his price tag.

MIDFIELDERS

Scott Pendlebury (Coll) $510,100

3-round average: 120
You might not get the super-consistent Pendelbury of old, but you will get your money’s worth at $510k. The Collingwood skipper couldn’t replicate his huge Queen’s Birthday effort against the Dockers last week, but he bounced back with another KFC SuperCoach ton, on the back of 28 disposals, 12 contested possessions and eight clearances, on Sunday. Pendlebury is averaging 117 since returning to the midfield in Round 12 against the Crows.

Sam Walsh (Carl) $554,200

3-round average: 113
Yes, there are a few injured players on the list, but Walsh is currently the 21st-most expensive midfielder in KFC SuperCoach – thanks, largely, to the Matt de Boer-effected score in Round 14. The young midfielder, however, has posted scores of 131 and 138 since, and is the 7th-ranked midfielder for total points this year. That’s value in anyone’s book, if you have the cash.

Andrew Brayshaw (Freo) $532,000

3-round average: 112
If money and trades are an issue – of course they are – you just have to accept that an extra uber-premium is out of reach. At $532, fresh off a season-high 135 against the Blues, the young Dockers star is the perfect M8. Since the two tough weeks with taggers in Rounds 3 and 4, the 21-year-old has posted seven KFC SuperCoach tons in his 10 matches, four of them in excess of 120.

Luke Dunstan (StK) $481,300

3-round average: 111
Dunstan is an interesting one – scoring has never been a real issue for him. Getting picked and injury have been, however. The ball-winning midfielder, who posted nine KFC SuperCoach tons in 2019 before missing all-but one game through injury last year, has played the past five matches after cracking back into the senior side and posted scores of 131, 79, 105, 109 and 118.

Taylor Adams (Coll) $483,300

3-round average: 105
At a similar price, selection isn’t an issue for the Magpies’ vice-captain – injury is. But Adams has posted back-to-back KFC SuperCoach tons since returning from his second stint on the sidelines this year.

Nat Fyfe at less than $500k any one? Picture: Darrian Traynor/Getty Images

Wait a week on ….

Nat Fyfe (Freo) $505,600
Breakeven: 154, Average: 105

He may have failed to reach three figures in KFC SuperCoach since Round 8, and scored just 72 in his return from a shoulder injury in Round 16, but Nat Fyfe at less than $500k is Nat Fyfe at less than $500k. In a good sign, the Dockers skipper spent most of his time in the midfield against the Blues, as coach Justin Longmuir suggested pre-match, to finish with 20 disposals and 11 contested possessions. Even if Fyfe scores 100 against the Hawks in Round 17, his price will still fall to around $480k.

Clayton Oliver (Melb) $599,200
Breakeven: 159, Average: 120

The star Demon won’t be as cheap, but considering he hit $703k following his huge 204-point performance in Adelaide, Oliver, too, looms as a bargain over the next few rounds. The 23-year-old is averaging 98 over the past four matches, and will lose another $24k off his price tag with a score of 105 against the Power. And that type of score will result in a very similar breakeven the week after.

RUCKS

Brodie Grundy (Coll) $607,200

Breakeven: 92, Average: 123
He’s not a bargain, but if you’re trying to get him back, with a breakeven of 92, in this is the cheapest he will be for a while - $41k down on his starting price.

FORWARDS

Rowan Marshall (StK) $437,200, Ruck

3-round average: 84
KFC SuperCoaches with their eye on Marshall would’ve been pleased with what they saw on Sunday. Marshall’s gametime (64 per cent) didn’t increase in his second game back from injury, but his output did. The star big man finished with 14 disposals, three contested marks, four hitouts-to-advantage, one goal and 100 KFC SuperCoach points. But it was still a score which saw his price drop by another $27k. With his time-on-ground likely to increase against the Lions, Marshall should get his breakeven of 88 in Round 17. His value as a dual-position ruck-forward target has also increased after the injury to Coleman-Jones.

Patrick Dangerfield (Geel) $533,100

3-round average: 125
Some of you will be kicking yourself you missed out on 184 points and Dangerfield at $495k. But $533k is still good buying, if you have the cash. With a breakeven of 32, do it this week, though.

Tom Hawkins (Geel) $460,200

3-round average: 92
Hawkins bounced back – eventually – after two poor weeks with six goals and 108 points against the Bombers. And there could be similar numbers in the run home with the Cats taking on Carlton, Fremantle, Richmond and North Melbourne in the next four, before three games at the Cattery. And that’s without any more fixture changes.

Jordan De Goey (Coll) $407,200

3-round average: 100
Need a straight swap for Jarman Impey – we’re talking to the dollar – or a very cheap upgrade for CCJ, De Goey might be worth taking a punt on. In the Queen’s Birthday clash with the Demons, De Goey, who is once again in the midfield with Jamie Elliot back in the side, equalled his career-best disposal tally of 32, before hitting the same mark against the Saints on Sunday. So that makes it two consecutive KFC SuperCoach tons - 115 and 114 - either side of the one-game suspension.

Lance Franklin (Syd) $449,400

3-round average: 98
As you can see, we’re slowly getting more risky. Ignoring the night Hawthorn jumped the Swans at the SCG – Franklin finished with 47 – he’s posted scores of 130, 90, 95, 130 and 113 since Round 9. And Buddy has booted 20 goals, and played a direct role in eight others, in the past six matches.

Mason Wood (StK) $356,500

3-round average: 100
Desperate times call for desperate measures in KFC SuperCoach. And, no offence to Mason, but this would be a desperate play. The numbers are there, however. Take out the injury-affected 16-point score in Round 12 and the former Kangaroo is averaging 103 points in his four full games since returning to the senior side. Wood has tallied a combined 59 pressure acts, 25 score involvements and 21 tackles, while also booting six goals, in those four matches.

Paddy Dow is showing promising signs. Picture: Quinn Rooney/Getty Images

Paddy Dow (Carl) $291,700

3-round average: 88
If Coleman-Jones is out and you just can’t afford to upgrade him, Dow has showed some promising signs in the past fortnight. The young midfielder, who struggled under the weight of expectation of the KFC SuperCoach community at the start of the year, was the star of the first half against the Dockers, recording 16 disposals, six clearances and 83 KFC SuperCoach points in the opening two quarters. He managed just six more disposals for the rest of the match, however, and finished with 84 points after his first-half was scaled back. But it followed on from an 88-point performance against the Crows the previous week. He finally looks confident at the level – can we be confident?

Wait a week on …

Zak Butters (Port) $501,200
Breakeven: 143, Average: 103

The young Port Adelaide star made a surprise early return to footy on the weekend, tallying 21 disposals, two goals and 133 KFC SuperCoach points in the SANFL. Power coach Ken Hinkley all-but suggest Butters will be straight in for the clash with the Demons but, with a breakeven of 143, you can afford to give him a week to get up to speed.

There’s also Josh Dunkley ($634k FWD) to keep an eye on, especially if you are playing for league glory. The Bulldogs expect the star midfielder back playing “the next 2-3 weeks” Dunkley’s price tag, and breakeven of 93, however, could put him out of reach for many. But given his scores of 113, 132, 132, 117, 148 and 132 before the injury, the 24-year-old could be huge point-of-difference come KFC SuperCoach finals time.
