OUR EXPERTS REVEAL THEIR STARTING SUPERCOACH TEAMS

PICK A SUPERCOACH TEAM IN ONLY FIVE MINUTES

THE TACKLE: ROBBO’S ROUND 1 LIKES AND DISLIKES

ROOKIE BIBLE: THE CHEAPIES YOU MUST PICK IN SUPERCOACH

FREMANTLE v NORTH MELBOURNE

No late changes.

Injuries: Ed Vickers-Willis (knee), Conca (finger)

Heroes: Plenty of coaches were scared off Nat Fyfe by a pre-season elbow injury and he played with it strapped on Sunday. It didn’t stop him racking up 32 disposals, a goal and 147 SuperCoach points, despite spending a decent chunk of the last quarter sitting on the bench. The game’s other hero was Kangaroos first-gamer Bailey Scott, who joined the illustrious first game, first SuperCoach ton club.

Villains: It was a dirty day for just about every North Melbourne player but Docker David Mundy is in our sights after he let teammates share the spoils of a massive win. Mundy’s 73 points was his lowest Round 1 score since 2007.

Hot take: At quarter-time it looked like Todd Goldstein was the ruck we all should have picked instead of Brodie Grundy or Max Gawn. He reached the half-century early in the second quarter but couldn’t maintain the rage, finishing with 100 — a respectable score but far from enough to settle the ruck debate. If you’ve got him, well done, but don’t rush to trade out the two big guns just yet.

GWS GIANTS v ESSENDON

No late changes.

Injuries: Harry Perryman (concussion)

Heroes: Stephen Coniglio had a day out at Giants Stadium — 31 disposals, seven tackles, three goals added up to a massive 154 SuperCoach points. In all eight Giants scored 100 or more including popular defender Lachie Whitfield and mid-price midfielder Tim Taranto.

Villains: If you had any Essendon players in your team it wasn’t a good day. Adam Saad (105) and Dylan Shiel (100) can hold their heads up but there wasn’t much else to smile about. Premiums Zach Merrett (67) and Devon Smith (79) were both well below par.

Hot take: Do we need to find a way to get Coniglio into our midfields again? He’s been on fire for all of 2019, scoring 140 and 123 in his two JLT Series games then taking the Bombers to the cleaners today. Can he keep it up when Josh Kelly and Callan Ward return from injury?

Saint Matthew Parker enjoyed his first AFL game.
Saint Matthew Parker enjoyed his first AFL game.

ST KILDA v GOLD COAST

No late changes.

Injuries: Ainsworth (knee), Swallow (knee)

Reports: Jade Gresham (StK) for rough conduct on Wil Powell.

Heroes: Jack Steele made up for a slow start with a huge second half to finish with 115 but the real SuperCoach story was Matt Parker. The $117,300 forward rookie was in everything early and managed to score 87 despite kicking two shots at goal out on the full. More like that and he’s in for a very healthy price rise.

Villains: Hands up everyone who started Sam Collins on the field? The mature-ager seemed a safe bet even at a pricey $188,900 for a rookie but he failed to deliver in his first game as a Sun, scoring just 27 points. Another Gold Coast rookie Chris Burgess scored just one more point.

Hot take: If Collins flops again next week and you’re looking for a cheap replacement down back, a couple of Saints put in solid early auditions. Callum Wilkie ($124,900) scored 70 off 11 disposals at 100 per cent efficiency, and Irishman Darragh Joyce ($123,900) managed 67 despite giving away five six kicks.

WEST COAST v BRISBANE LIONS

No late changes.

Injuries: Nil.

Reports: Liam Ryan (WC) for striking Darcy Gardiner.

Heroes: Who says the JLT Series doesn’t mean anything? Dom Sheed carried his amazing pre-season form into the home-and-away opener, scoring a game-high 144 points — that makes it 144, 134, 144 from his past three matches. Lachie Neale churned out 127 in his first game as a Lion.

Villains: Some players looking for value in the ruck put their hopes in West Coast’s ruck partnership without Nic Naitanui. But somehow Nathan Vardy (23) and Tom Hickey (36) were both in the bottom-four scorers on the ground. Jack Petruccelle’s 44 points were also underwhelming for a popular rookie pick.

Hot take: Predictions the Lions would be a team on the rise look justified, and that’s great news if you picked the likes of Neale, Harris Andrews (117), Dayne Zorko (112) and Alex Witherden (97) in SuperCoach. Stef Martin took the No.1 ruck role over Archie Smith after all, but still scored just 82.

Marcus Bontempelli was back to his best against Sydney.
Marcus Bontempelli was back to his best against Sydney.

WESTERN BULLDOGS v SYDNEY

No late changes.

Injuries: Suckling (ankle).

Heroes: How does The Bont do it? One day we’ll calculate how many of his points come from being in the right place at the right time to kick a goal when the game is in the balance in the dying minutes, but it’s a lot. His 158 points was huge while 132 from Jack Macrae and 131 from Jake Lloyd was about par for their high starting prices.

Villains: Lance Franklin is always a risky proposition but can when he’s on, he can scorea lot of points in not much time. Both aspects of his game were on show on Saturday night when he had barely registered a score until three-quarter time but finished with 55 after almost getting Sydney over the line. Still, not ideal if you spent $543,500 on him.

Hot take: Tom Liberatore’s 75 points would have disappointed some owners but stick with him. His 28 disposals and eight clearances (offset by four clangers and a disposal efficiency of 60 per cent) suggest he’ll be well worth the modest $300k investment.

ADELAIDE V HAWTHORN

No late changes.

Injuries: Doedee (knee), Douglas (ankle), Shiels (finger).

Heroes: Much has been made of Hawthorn’s steals at the trade table, but what about drafting James Worpel at pick no. 45? The tough on-baller plays like he has been out there for years and was close to best afield in his 13th game with 27 disposals, four marks and two goals. Those stats equated to 110 SuperCoach points. Jack Gunston (103) and Jaeger O’Meara (105) were also prolific for the Hawks, while Rory Sloane (155) and Matt Crouch (138) were top scorers despite being on the losing side.

Villains: Adelaide's forward line had the yips in the last quarter and three of the Crows main targets in attack scored 56 or less. Spearhead Josh Jenkins finished with 54 points, with co-captain Taylor Walker (50) and small forward Eddie Betts (56) did not exert much influence.

Hot take: Many coaches spent days upon days stressing about which players to select in the tricky F3 and F4 positions. Expect James Worpel to fill either role in far more than the 11.5% of sides he currently features in by the time prices change at the end of Round 3. He showed against Adelaide he has the finishing class to complement his tenacity around the ball.

MELBOURNE V PORT ADELAIDE

Late change: Jordan Lewis (hamstring) replaced by Tom Sparrow.

Injuries: Marshall (concussion).

Heroes: Justin Westhoff, available this year as a Ruck-Fwd, was the star for the Power with five goals and 149 points. Tom Rockliff followed up his return to form in the JLT Series with 43 disposals and 138 points, while Travis Boak (Fwd-Mid) had 119 points. Hard not to be impressed by first gamer Willem Drew, who scored 103. Christian Salem (139) was the pick of Melbourne’s players, while James Harmes scored 103.

Villains: We can bank on Max Gawn and Clayton Oliver for 100s most weeks, right? The star Demons pair were below their best against the Power as Gawn scored 87 and Oliver 71. It was the first time since Round 22, 2017 one of Gawn and Oliver hasn’t scored 100.

Hot take: Tom Rockliff is back. We wondered after the JLT Series whether he was teasing us when he had 42 possessions, nine clearances and two goals against North Melbourne. Rockliff answered that question with a display typical of his days with Brisbane Lions when he was a popular SuperCoach pick. He needs to be considered at $405,900 before prices rise after Round 3.

COLLINGWOOD V GEELONG

No late changes.

Injuries: Nil.

Heroes: It would have taken a brave coach to predict Rhys Stanley would eclipse Brodie Grundy in the SuperCoach scoring battle. Stanley was the dominant big man on the ground and his total reflected this as he managed 108 points. Tim Kelly showed his value as a Fwd-Mid pick with 106 points, while Luke Dahlhaus (102), Sam Menegola (101), Harry Taylor (100) and Mitch Duncan (100) were the other Cats to hit triple figures. Adam Treloar (102) was the only Magpie to reach that mark.

Villains: Well played if you started without Brodie Grundy. He’s all but certain to plummet in price come Round 3 after scoring 81, his lowest total since Round 17, 2017. There’s no point panicking after one round, because if you picked the most expensive ruckman in the game you planned on holding him for the season. It’ll be a huge bonus if you can pick him up cheaply after Collingwood’s Round 13 bye. Jordan De Goey looked out of sorts in attack, edging to 59 points after he showed signs of life in the second half. Geelong young gun Jack Henry was the lowest scorer on the ground with 17 points.

Hot take: Thedominant school of thought suggested it would be unlikely Tim Kelly, Sam Menegola and Patrick Dangerfield could be top-six forwards come season’s end. On the evidence of Friday night, when they totalled 106, 102 and 97, it is clear that trio is more than capable of accumulating big totals despite sharing points in the same team.

CARLTON v RICHMOND

No late changes.

Injuries: Rance (knee).

Heroes: Hats off to The Phantom who stuck to his guns and picked Blues recruit Nic Newman at $394,100 in defence. He collected 26 disposals (21 of them kicks, including a brilliant goal from the boundary line) and a game-high 134 SuperCoach points. Patrick Cripps rewarded the almost 70 per cent of players who started with him by scoring 126 while Toby Nankervis topped the Tigers’ scoresheet with 127.

Villains: Noah Balta made his way into a lot of teams on Thursday and looked like an inspired selection when he kicked a goal in the first quarter. But he had little impact after that and finished with just 18 points.

Hot take: We got our first loophole lesson of the season. Cripps was a popular VC choice but some coaches opted to roll the dice hoping Brodie Grundy, Max Gawn or Patrick Dangerfield would top his 126 points. Oops. Round 1 is way too unpredictable for risks like that.

SUNDAY TEAMS CONFIRMED

Stuck on who to pick for your last rookie forward spot? Fremantle might have provided a solution. The Dockers have named mature-age small forward Lachlan Schultz ($117,300, Fwd) recruited from VFL club Williamstown, to debut against North Melbourne.

Bailey Scott ($117,300, Mid) has been named on a half-forward flank for North Melbourne, although first-round pick Tarryn Thomas has been named as an emergency.

Mature-age recruits Matt Parker ($117,300, Fwd) and Callum Wilkie ($124,900, Def) will play their first games for St Kilda, while Nick Hind has been overlooked.

Zac Clarke ($142,600, Ruck) has been left out of Essendon’s team to face GWS, while Giants draftee Jackson Hately ($148,800, Mid) was named an emergency.

CARLTON V RICHMOND

Heroes: He’s the second most-popular midfielder and Patrick Cripps showed why with a bullocking display which yielded 126 points. He kept the Blues in the contest when Richmond threatened to blow them away in the opening term. Nic Newman rewarded the 7.4% of owners who stuck by him despite a below-par JLT Series with a game-high 134 points. You’d be thrilled if you’re in the 3.3% of teams who opted to pick Toby Nankervis instead of Brodie Grundy and Max Gawn after the Tigers ruckman amassed 127 points. Mid-priced defender Bachar Houli had 112 points and Dustin Martin finished with a flourish to record 109, equal with Blues young gun Zach Fisher.

Villains: Carlton’s small forwards had a tough night, with bargain-basement rookie Michael Gibbons scoring 35 points and Alex Fasolo 26. Key targets Mitch McGovern (44) and Charlie Curnow (44) didn’t fare much better. The 5.8% of sides with Alex Rance will have sleepless nights this week as they wait to learn the severity of his knee injury. Rance was on 36 points when he was helped from the field.

Hot take: Patrick Cripps is going to be hard to topple for the mantle of the No. 1 Supercoach midfielder this year. Cripps averaged 119.4 last year and his first game of 2019 suggested he’ll go close to that mark if not better this campaign.
