AFL 2024: All the SuperCoach takeaways and analysis from Super Sunday, round 22

It could’ve been one of the all-time highest scoring rounds ever, but the SuperCoach gods had other ideas as carnage ensued. Check out the key takeaways and relive all the action.

Hawthorn players talk SuperCoach!

Carlton’s season is on the brink after a disastrous loss to Hawthorn.

The Blues were beaten by 74 points and suffered a string of injuries with Charlie Curnow (ankle) the biggest name to go down.

The win catapults the Hawks into the top eight at the Blues’ expense after a huge swing in percentage.

In the second Sunday game St Kilda out Richmond to the sword with a 8-point triumph at Marvel Stadium, and Adelaide cruised to a 39-point win over the Western Bulldogs.

Discover our SuperCoach takeaways and relive all the analysis below.

The Three Takeaways

CHARLIE NIGHTMARE

Selecting any player in SuperCoach based on their upcoming fixture is always risky, and that risk is doubled with key forwards. But even coaches who were cursing Curnow’s 33-point return last week comforted themselves by looking ahead to a meeting with West Coast in round 23.

This is the team Curnow played twice in 2023, for returns of 186 and 178 SuperCoach points. That meeting is now in extreme doubt after Curnow went down with an ankle injury against the Hawks - when he had just 17 points to his name. At least he kicked a goal early when the scores were still close.

PUNT ROAD BUTCHERS

Richmond has not been a SuperCoach relevant team in 2024, but they could be next year with the team likely to include a bunch of top-end draft picks and bargains returning from injury. But the Tigers need to get a kicking coach over summer to avoid their scores being crucified like they have been this season. Check out the kicking efficiency from these Tigers on Sunday - Toby Nankervis 57 per cent, Tim Taranto 56 per cent, Shai Bolton, Hugo Ralphsmith and Seth Campbell 50 per cent, Jacob Hopper 37 per cent, Jacob Koschitzke 33 per cent. Yuck.

DALE DISASTER

It was too good to be true. Scores of 2700 beckoned for plenty on Saturday as popular players boomed across the board, but many coaches came crashing back to reality on Sunday, particularly the 23,271 that own Bailey Dale.

He fell a whopping 75 points of his projected score of 120 with just 45 points. It was his second lowest score of the season - a 12 when he started as the sub in round 5 takes the cake - in a very uncharacteristic showing. He only had 14 touches from 85 per cent time on ground.

He had been showing some inconsistencies having twice dropped below 80 in the past five weeks, but he’d also passed 120 twice in that time.

It’s too late for most - if not all - so we have to simply ride the wave.

FULL-TIME CROWS V DOGS

The Crows maintained their strong lead to cruise to a 39-point victory over the Western Bulldogs at Adelaide Oval.

Turning to SuperCoach, Reilly O’Brien continued the trend of rucks dominating this round with a game-high score of 119.

Marcus Bontempelli also recovered from his poor start to finish with a respectable total of 117 points.

Jordan Dawson didn’t disappoint his owners with 105 - which plenty would take given his patchy form of late.

Bailey Dale was very underwhelming with just 45 points in a disaster for his owners.

ENGLISH GOAL

It was nothing more than a late consolation goal for the Bulldogs, but it was a saving grace for over 55,000 SuperCoaches that own Tim English. After a quiet three quarters it has lifted his score to a respectable 86.

CURTIN GOES BANG

Dan Curtin has taken a great mark and converted to kick his first career AFL goal. It extends Adelaide’s lead to 52 points and the Dogs hopes of a miracle comeback are dead and buried

WALKER SUBBED

Taylor Walker has been subbed out after copping a stray Tim English hand to the face late in the third term. Walker could be seen with a bloodshot and puffy eye on the bench.

It means Zac Taylor is subbed into the game and has gone straight to the centre square.

THREE-QUARTER-TIME CROWS V DOGS

The dominant Crows kicked away to a 41-point lead late in the third term. It would take a miracle comeback for the Dogs to comeback from here, and they may have just blown a crucial chance to secure a finals berth with two round to play.

Popular SuperCoach midfielders Adam Treloar (79 points), Tom Liberatore (86) and Marcus Bontempelli (84) have all been slightly above par thus far.

Tim English is below his best with 57 while a disaster looms for Bailey Dale owners as he has just 34 points.

NAUGHTON MANAGED?

Talk about an eyebrow raiser, Aaron Naughton has been subbed out of the game for Caleb Daniel. The Crows inistsed to Fox Footy boundary reporter Kath Loughnan that Naughton was simply being managed.

Interesting time to manage players given the Dogs trail by 30 with their season on the line.

CHORUS OF BOOS

Crows fans are livid at Adelaide Oval. A Liam Jones tackle on four-goal star Darcy Fogarty was rewarded by the umpire with a hold the ball free kick despite Fogarty appearing to handball it legally.

Less than a minute later play was halted after Taylor Walker went down clutching his head. Replays showed Tim English catching him in the face with an open falm. The Adelaide faithful took exception to both incident.

FULL-TIME AT MARVEL

Saints do it easy in the end after kicking 8.5 to 2.7 after halftime.

Rowan Marshall kicked three goals straight to finish as the leading Saint and one of eight over 100 SuperCoach points.Daniel Rioli tried his heart out.

CHIEF WOULD BE FUMING

For all his strengths - and there are many - Marcus Bontempelli just reminded us that he isn’t perfect after all. Hard to believe - right?

As was pointed out by Mark Ricciuto on Fox Footy’s coverage, the great Jason ‘Chief’ Dunstall was likely blowing up deluxe at his TV after Bontempelli attempted the dribble the footy through a vacant square from the outside of his boot. He was 40m out on the run and had nothing but clear air between himself at the goals. I’m sure we’ll be hearing about it on tonight’s episode of Bounce.

Given majors have been at such a premium for the Dogs it was no doubt a moment their spirited leader would love to have again.

Meanwhile, Darcy Fogarty slotted his fourth major to extend Adelaide’s lead and Tim English has returned to the field after an injury scare where he hobbled off.

TRIPLE TREAT

We’re just minutes into the second half but Darcy Fogarty has joined Ben Keays as a triple goal-scorer today for Adelaide against the Dogs. He converted his latest set shot with ease to put the Crows back out to a 26-point lead.

It comes as an injury cloud has formed over Tim English who was seen hobbling from the field.

WOEFUL GOALKICKING

Some more woeful goalkicking has cruelled Richmond in the final term. The Tigers have kicked 0.4 including a Jack Graham miss from the top of the goalsquare and Dion Prestia running into an open goal under no pressure from 25m.

The Saints, meanwhile, have added 2.4 of their own as a string of players break the 100-SuperCoach point barrier including Rowan Marshall (119), Jack Sinclair (112), Tim Membrey (106), Josh Battle (106) and Paddy Dow (100).

CAN’T STOP HIM

It was so uncharacteristic we knew it couldn’t continue.

Marcus Bontempelli took Rory Laird forward and cashed in with his second consecutive goal - either side of the half-time break.

He now 66 points and in the blink of an eye is the matches leading SuperCoach scorer. What a player. If you have the ‘C’ on him it’s time for a nice, big exhale.

HALF-TIME CROWS V DOGS

Marcus Bontempelli - as he so often does - stood tall when the Western Bulldogs needed him. On the cusp of half-time he nailed a set shot to deliver the Dogs their fourth goal of the afternoon.

Set shot accuracy has marred the Bulldogs who have kicked 10 behinds and trail by 26 points. It’s been a long-standing issue they’ve suffered and have been kicking at just 39 per cent accuracy in front of goal.

The late major papered over the crack of a disappointing first half for Bontempelli who has been uncharacteristically quiet by his tremendously lofty standards with 51 SuperCoach points and 10 disposals. In what could be one of the highest scoring weeks ever in SuperCoach, he threatens to derail the round of those that captained him.

Ben Keays has been the top SuperCoach scorer after his outstretched toe-poke goal and has 62 points.

Dogs ruck Tim English is below his best with 40, and popular Dog Nick Coffield has 25 points.

Defender Bailey Dale is on track for a disastrous score with just 21 points in the firs-half.

THREE QUARTER-TIME AT MARVEL

The Saints extend their lead to 24 points with a quarter to go. Around the ground it’s a fairly even contest - the Tigers lead the inside-50s 37-35 but are killing themselves with some horrendous kicking going forward.

Daniel Rioli has ticked over 100 SuperCoach points at the final change with Rowan Marshall (96) not far behind. Jack Sinclair (80) was a bit quieter that quarter.

COSTLY MISSES ADD UP

It’s been a rough old opening half for the Western Bulldogs and they haven’t done themselves any favours kicking 10 behinds with just three majors to trail by 32 on the cusp of half-time.

RICHARDS BLOODIED

Bulldog Ed Richards has been taken down to the rooms to get a cut on his head patched up as he was bleeding heavily. He’s expected to return to the game.

SAINTS SWING SUB

St Kilda has activated their sub with Angus McLellan making way for Jimmy Webster to enter the game. The change was tactical

ALARM BELLS FOR DOGS

The Western Bulldogs are playing for a spot in the top four and the Crows aren’t playing for much, but you wouldn’t know it.

Adelaide has skipped to a 26-point lead midway through the second term and some of the Bulldogs’ biggest stars have been unusually quiet.

TIGERS BACK IN IT

Shai Bolton kicks Richmond’s third goal in a row and the margin is back to seven points.

That’s his second to move to 41 SuperCoach points. Daniel Rioli leads the way with 82.

QUARTER-TIME

Does this crazy round have another final twist?

A great start from the Crows, who have a 22-point lead over the Dogs at the first change.

Not sure many would have had Mark Keane for highest SuperCoach scorer, he’s in just over 2000 teams.

Matt Crouch (9) and Adam Treloar (8) are the leading disposal winners early.

WHERE’S BONT?

A slow start for the champ with three disposals and 15 SuperCoach points as we approach quarter-time in Adelaide.

KEAYS OFF TO FLYER

Ben Keays is no stranger to controversial goal umpiring calls, but this one went his way – after he demanded a review.

He has two goals and 30 SuperCoach points as the Crows get an early jump on the Bulldogs.

HALFTIME AT MARVEL

It’s all about looking for green shoots for the Tigers now and Sam Banks is having a breakout game at half-back.

His career best in 18 senior games is 18 disposals and he has 17 at halftime today.

IZAK’S BACK

Izak Rankine is straight into the middle for his first game after a four-match suspension.

And he wins the first clearance to help set up a Bean Keays goal against the Bulldogs.

SAINTS KICK AWAY

St Kilda has kicked the last four goals at Marvel Stadium to put a gap on Richmond.

Tim Membrey has been the star so far with two goals and 63 SuperCoach points.

FULL TIME AT THE MCG

Big win for the Hawks and they have taken Carlton’s spot in the eight in a disastrous day for the Blues, who lost Charlie Curnow to an ankle injury.

With games to come against Richmond and North Melbourne, the Hawks are going to be hard to knock out of the finals.

No massive SuperCoach returns in this one, the big news was Curnow’s nightmare 17-point return.

FINAL TEAMS FOR CROWS v DOGS

No late changes for the last game of the round. Zac Taylor (Adelaide) and Caleb Daniel (Western Bulldogs) are the starting subs.

QUARTER TIME

An entertaining contest at Marvel Stadium, with not a whole lot on the line at least when it comes to the top eight with neither team featuring in September action this year.

Jack Sinclair continuing the trend of defenders scoring well against Richmond, while Daniel Rioli is having an underrated season at half-back for the Tigers.

TIGERS BITE BACK

Jacob Bauer kicks a goal to level the scores 19-19 at Marvel Stadium. His inclusion for his first game of the season today takes to 42 the number of players used by the Tigers in 2024.

West Coast, North Melbourne and Adelaide have used the next most with 39, while Sydney has used just 31. No coincidence where these teams sit on the ladder.

BAD NEWS BLUES

More of the same from the MCG, with Carlton players beginning the cramp - but with no spares on the bench there’s nothing they can do. The Hawks still have boundless run, but aren’t making the Blues play on the scoreboard as Jacob Weitering valiantly continues his sisyphean task down back.

SAINTS OUT OF BLOCKS

The second game of the day is underway at Marvel Stadium and St Kilda has the first two goals against Richmond, via Cooper Sharman and Tim Membrey.

HAWKS SUB OFF DAY

Big tactical move by the Hawks at three quarter-time, putting Will Day on ice and bringing on Luke Breust for the final term. Day finishes with just 34 SuperCoach points.

THREE QUARTER-TIME

Wow, did we just see Carlton’s season unravel in that quarter?

Hawthorn kicked another 4.5 to 1.1 to extend its lead and close the percentage gap on the Blues in eighth place.

Carlton looks totally rudderless and the big story of the day is an ankle injury to superstar Charlie Curnow.

Football manager Brad Lloyd: “He’s pretty sore. He’s battled with it for a few weeks not but it’s too early to tell (if it’s season over).”

Jack Martin has a hamstring strain and Lachie Fogarty is also done for the day.

CURNOW DOWN

Huge news unfolding here – Charlie Curnow is being carried down to the rooms in extreme pain after his left ankle gave way while trying to make a lead.

He punched the turf and looks a long shot to return. His day could be done on 14 SuperCoach points.

And will he be back next week?

UPDATE: Carlton has confirmed Curnow has ankle injury and won’t return. He was under a cloud during the week after rolling his ankle against Collingwood but was passed fit to play.

UPDATE (2): Now Mitch McGovern is off with a shoulder injury. This is turning into a disastrous day for Carlton.

Meanwhile, Jack Ginnivan snaps a goal from the boundary line and the Hawks have more than doubled Carlton’s score. Anthony Hudson says on Fox Footy Carlton’s season is “one the edge of oblivion”.

SAINTS LATE CHANGE

St Kilda has made a late change for its game against Richmond, and it’s a big one for plenty of SuperCoach teams.

Mattaes Phillipou (illness) is out, replaced by Paddy Dow.

HALFTIME

Massive job ahead of the Blues after a five goal to nil quarter from the red-hot Hawks.

Charlie Curnow is having another nightmare game despite kicking an early goal. At halftime his stat line reads two disposals, two frees against and 11 SuperCoach points. He’s in 19 per cent of SuperCoach teams, and 32 per cent of teams ranked in the top 10 per cent. Not what you want in a knockout final!

HAWKS ARE ROLLING

Jack Gunston slams another one through to make it five goals in a row for Hawthorn.

Carlton seemingly has no answers to the Hawks’ onslaught – and that percentage gap between eighth and ninth on the ladder is shrinking!

Jordan Lewis on Fox Footy: “Carlton are out on their feet.”

HAWKS GET A BREAK

Carlton is on the back foot and the Hawks are right on top in the first half of the second quarter.

Lloyd Meek wins a 50m penalty for a late spoil from Mitch McGovern and makes no mistake to jump to a 19-point lead.

Sam Walsh has one disposal for the quarter and Charlie Curnow’s sole contribution since quarter-time is a free kick against.

MORE BLUES INJURIES

Carlton has problems on the bench with Lachie Fogarty also done for the day with a collarbone injury, and Jordan Boyd being assessed for a hip issue.

CURNOW CALAMITY

Oh no! Huge missed opportunity for Charlie Curnow who gathered in space 40m from goal and paused to weigh up his options ... for way too long and was run down by James Sicily.

QUARTER-TIME

Hawthorn has a two-point lead after a cracking first quarter. Looking at SuperCoach scores, it’s a great start for the 2000 teams with Calsher Dear!

Of the more popular picks in action, Sam Walsh had six disposals at 100 per cent efficiency, while Dylan Moore (21 points) and Patrick Cripps (18) were solid.

Charlie Curnow has 12 points from one mark, one kick and one goal.

Meanwhile, Carlton has activated its sub at quarter-time with Alex Cincotta replacing Jack Martin (hamstring).

Quarter-time Blues v Hawks SuperCoach leaders.

CHARLIE ON THE BOARD

Last week Charlie Curnow went goalless for the first time in 66 games but he hasn’t wasted any time getting on the board today, snapping truly after marking a pass from Jack Martin in the forward pocket.

Carlton needed that after the Hawks kicked the first two goals.

OH DEAR

Calsher Dear has the first goal after marking 22 seconds following the opening bounce. Will Day and Lloyd Meek combined for the clearance.

Massive crowd in the house bathed in sunshine – it does feel a lot like September!

The ball hasn’t been in Carlton’s forward half yet but James Sicily is standing Harry McKay and Sam Frost has Charlie Curnow.

THE STAKES

Essendon’s shock loss means the Blues enter Sunday clinging to eighth spot. The Hawks can join them on 48 points with a win today, but would need a monster margin to overtake them on percentage.

HAWKS LATE CHANGE

Hawthorn has made a late late change for the first game of a massive Sunday.

The Hawks submitted their team sheet with no changes, but have now revealed defender Changkuoth Jiath is a late withdrawal due to soreness.

He has been replaced in the selected side by Harry Morrison, with Luke Breust to start as Hawthon’s sub again.

Alex Cincotta will start as Carlton’s sub – good news for Will Day, who copped the Toby Bedford tag last week.
