AFL 2024: Relive updates, SuperCoach scores and analysis from Super Sunday

A point of difference Saint dazzled while one popular trade-in megastar flopped. See the SuperCoach takeaways and relive all the action here.

Horne-Francis running riot for Port

Point of difference SuperCoach options are the talk of the town following a Super Sunday that dished up plenty of surprises.

In the first clash of the day, Port Adelaide eased the pressure on coach Ken Hinkley with a nail biting win over St Kilda, before Carlton flexed its muscle against Richmond to surge to a 61-point win.

In the final game in the west, the Eagles welcomed back Harley Reid but were trounced by a Hawthorn side surging toward September.

See our SuperCoach takeaways and relive the analysis below.

The Three Takeaways

SINCLAIR SHINES

Dual All-Australian Jack Sinclair had an unusually subdued start to 2024, averaging 99.5 over the first 12 rounds. But since then he has exploded after being settled at half-back, putting up scores of 147, 135 and 143 in his past three games - topping the 30-disposal mark in each outing.

That slow start, and an awkward round 15 bye, has resulted in Sinclair being in just 6 per cent of SuperCoach teams. But if you can find the cash and a spot in your defence (or midfield), he could be a huge point of difference for the final eight rounds.

CHARLIE FLOPS

Charlie Curnow maintained his record of kicking at least two goals in every game this season, but it took until the dying minutes to get his second after a superb defensive effort from unheralded Tiger Ben Miller.

Traded into more than 6000 teams this week after booting five goals against the Cats, he managed only seven disposals and three marks for the day. Another reminder basing trades off the fixture is risky business.

HAWTHORN PODS DAZZLE

The perks of taking a punt on point of difference SuperCoach options were laid bare as the Hawks handed West Coast a shellacking Perth.

James Sicily and Dylan Moore have been somewhat popular trade-in options this season, but both sit in less than 10 per cent of teams and went nuclear against the Eagles.

Sicily ($544,100) notched a massive score of 142 despite sitting out the majority of the final quarter with a shoulder issue while Dylan Moore - who has had an up and down season - strung together one of his most consistent performances all year.

Left-field ryck option Lloyd Meek - who is in just 2.5 per cent of teams - was the game’s highest scorer with 145 points. Despite scores in the 70s in his past two outings, Meek had managed four tons on the trot prior to that and was still priced at over $500,000 heading into Sunday’s game. Very well played to the 90 coaches who traded him in.

FT: HAWKS CRUISE TO VICTORY

Hawthorn cruised in the second-half to claim a comfortable 61-point victory over West Coast in the west.

Turning to SuperCoach, point of difference ruck Lloyd Meek starred to reward his owners with a whopping 145-point effort.

Despite sitting out most of the last quarter with a shoulder injury, James Sicily also racked up a monster 142 points

Dylan Moore was another Hawk who impressed, scoring at an even clip across the entire game to rack up 134 points in what was a great nod to his consistency. Will Day was also strong with 104 points.

For the Eagles, Jeremy McGovern dazzled to reward his 7.9 per cent of owners with 132 points.

In his return from suspension Harley Reid hit the wall in the second half and finished on just 80 points, while Marcus D’Ambrosio was solid for those that have held onto him to finish with 91 points.

West Coast’s Elliot Yeo - who sits in over 10 per cent of teams - was below his best with 64 points.

6:56pm: GOV THE LATEST CASUALTY

West Coast’s Jeremy McGovern is now leaving the field in discomfort with what appeared to be an injury to the hand or wrist region sustained sliding for the footy in a marking contest.

It’s one of a number of injuries to key players in this clash, and if he plays no further the part the floodgate could open with Hawthorn already leading by 62 points and over eight minutes still to play.

6:51pm: SHHHH

West Coast’s defence fell apart and any number of Hawks could have finished the goal, but it was Jack Ginnivan who almost made a meal of it and ended up drop-kicking the ball through from close-range.

The polarising Hawthorn forward extended his side’s lead to 57 and wasn’t afraid to give it to the rowdy Optus Stadium with ‘shush’ celebration as he put his finger to his mouth.

He was the second Hawks small forward to do so today after Nick Watson used the celebration in the second term.

Ginnivan now has two goals for Hawthorn, along with Dylan Moore and Mabior Chol.

6:45pm: HAWKS INJURY UPDATE

Despite a likely dislocated shoulder and comfortable Hawks lead, James Sicily is going to soldier on and play out the final term.

Will Day also survived a concussion scare on the cusp of three-quarter-time and attended a centre bounce early in the fourth term.

3QT: EAGLES-HAWKS SUPERCOACH ANALYSIS

Hawthorn is putting West Coast to the sword to take a 39-point lead into three-quarter-time.

James Sicily is facing a shoulder concern but the Hawks skipper has been electrice with 127 points to his name already.

Popular Eagle Harley Reid slowed down with just 17 points in the third term, but he’s still on track for a respectable total with 70 points all up.

D’ambrosio on the other hand enjoyed a strong third term for the Hawks, netting 31 points to jump to 76.

Dual position player Elliot Yeo has struggled with just 49 points, while Dylan Moore has had a brilliant game, netting 30 points or more every quarter to bring up his ton with a term still to play.

6:35pm: MORE INJURY CHAOS

Will Day and Jeremy McGovern were both seen in the hands of trainers on the three-quarter-time siren as more injury carnage ensues in Perth.

James Sicily is in the rooms with a suspected dislocated shoulder and Calsher Dear picked up a knock to the ribs before being subbed out for Hawthorn.

For the Eagles, Matt Flynn was subbed out with an ankle injury while Jake Waterman went down to the rooms earlier with a knee complaint.

6:31pm: SICILY INJURED

Another injury has struck at Optus Stadium with Hawk James Sicily the latest player to head down to the change rooms. Sicily could be seen leaving the field in pain with a limped arm, and Will Schofield speculated that it was a dislocated shoulder on Fox Footy’s coverage. It would be a major blow for Hawthorn if its skipper could play no further part, but also James Sicily’s 9.1 per cent of SuperCoach owners given he had 126 points inside three quarters.

6:16pm: DEAR SUBBED

Despite a rib complaint, Hawthorn’s decision to sub out Cashler Dear was tactical as Harry Morrison entered the game, reported Kath Loughnan on Fox Footy.

6:15pm: EAGLES MAKE SUB

Fox Footy’s Kath Loughnan reported boundary side that Matt Flynn has been subbed off by West Coast with an ankle injury, while Jake Waterman is battling an issue with the back of his knee.

It means Ryan Maric will enter the clash for West Coast.

6:11pm: INJURY CARNAGE

The talls are tumbling in the west as injury carnage wreaks havoc on both sides.

West Coast has Jake Waterman who landed awkwardly in a marking contest for the time being and is down in the change rooms.

The Eagles are also without Matt Flynn who could be seen in significant pain while being treated by physios on the interchange. Commentators on Fox Footy speculated it to be a lower leg issue.

The same contest that wounded Flynn also saw Hawthorn’s Calsher Dear leave the field after he appeared to cop a knee to the ribs.

Expect some subs to be activated very soon.

FT: BLUES WIN

In the end it’s a 61-point margin as the Blues build their flag credentials, with Sam Walsh and Patrick Cripps huge in the midfield.

But the Tigers were far from disgraced, with the match largely decided in a 10-minute burst at the end of the third quarter when Carlton turned a six-point lead into a 45-point advantage.

One surprise Richmond winner was defender Ben Miller, who topped the SuperCoach ton while his opponent Charlie Curnow finished on 54 with the help of a second goal in the junk time in the final term.

HT: EAGLES-HAWKS SUPERCOACH ANALYSIS

Hawthorn survived a late Eagles fightback to take a 17-point lead into the main break in a low-scoring Optus Stadium affair.

Dylan Moore continued his stellar match to reward the 7.1 per cent of coaches that have forked out for him with 71 points to the half. He’s been scoring consistently with over 30 points coming in each quarter so far and could be on track for a big day.

Point of difference ruck Lloyd Meek is leading all comers with 87 points in a massive return for the 2.5 per cent of coaches that own him.

Despite some poor kicking Harley Reid is on track for a score that will put a smile on the face of coaches that have stuck with him through suspension, as he has 53 points.

Hawthorn’s Massimo D’Ambrosio is also performing well with 45.

5:42pm: THE WIZARD STRIKES

That was a much-needed goal for both Hawthorn and Nick Watson.

‘The Wizard’ struck in the shadows of half-time for his first goal of the match. It was timely given West Coast had kicked two of the past three and were closing in on the Hawks.

Warson had also missed a chance for goal earlier, marking his 16th behind of the season to go with his six goals.

5:35pm: HARLEY FAILS TO FIRE

Harley Reid hasn’t been at his best early in this clash against the Hawks, missing several targets. He was awarded a free kick from 40m out and failed to convert, missing slightly to the left.

Despite the poor kicking the young star has look good in the contest. The Eagles goal kicking has been poor however and they have six behinds but just the one goal.

5:34pm: BLUES ACTIVATE SUB

Adam Cerra has been subbed off in what looks like some man management from the Blues. George Hewett comes into the game midway through the final term with another win locked away.

3QT: TIGERS-BLUES SUPERCOACH ANALYSIS

This has gone from a close contest to a blowout in the blink of an eye.

Richmond closed the gap to six points midway through the third term only to watch Carlton pile on the next six goals, five of them coming in an eight-minute blitzkreig - started by the controversial Harry McKay mark.Sam Walsh was huge that term, adding a goal of his own, while Tiger defender Ben Miller is playing the game of his life keeping Charlie Curnow to just four touches, one goal and 31 SuperCoach points.

5:21pm: CHOL SOARS

Mabior Chol flew for a spectacular hanger in the second quarter of Hawthorn’s clash against West Coast.

The Hawks look a class above early and have a comfortable lead.

5:15pm: NO TIME NEEDED

The Eagles were goalless for the entirety of the first quarter against Hawthorn but it took just 17 seconds of the second quarter for them to nab their first.

It came via Jamaine Jones who coolly converted as he was streaking towards goal.

QT: EAGLES-HAWKS SUPERCOACH ANALYSIS

Jeremy McGovern flourished in the opening stanza with the Eagles backline under the pump to shoot to mind-boggling 67 points at quarter-time. He’s on track for over 200 if he can maintain that form.

Popular Hawks forward Dylan Moore also enjoyed a strong start to finish the quarter on 39 points while Will Day has 31.

Eagles young gun Harley Reid made a solid start in his return game from suspension with 20 points, while Hawks winger Massimo D’Ambrosio had 18.

5:10pm: DUSTY OUT

Richmond has made a big sub call with champ Dustin Martin putting the tracksuit top on before three quarter-time. Dusty looked a bit sore coming to the bench. Sam Banks is into the game.

Meanwhile, the Blues have skipped to a 29-point lead with three goals in five kicks. One involved a touch of lucky with Harry McKay converting after marking a ball that looked like it was clearly deflected off Nic Newman’s boot.

5:05pm: WET WEATHER FOOTY

The rain is coming down at the G, making this an even tougher arm wrestle.

It’s one goal each for the second half with Richmond’s defence - including first-gamer Jacob Blight - holding firm in the face of a wave of Carlton inside-50s.

Blight has 37 SuperCoach points in his first game while Dan Rioli has bolted to 94.

5:04pm: ALMOST HARLEY

Harley Reid nearly delivered the Eagles first goal in spectacular fashion with a booming drop punt from the 50m arc. The Optus Stadium crowd rose and you could hear the anticipated excitement, but it wasn’t to be, with the ball sailing through for a behind.

The Eagles are yet to kick a major and have work to do early. Hawthorn leads by 16.

4:45pm: HAWKS STRIKE

Hawthorn has kicked the first goal against the Eagles at Optus Stadium as the final clash of the day gets underway.

The opening goal of the day came courtesy of Changkuoth Jiath.

4:35pm: HALFTIME

Need a POD in defence?

Nic Newman is in just 2 per cent of SuperCoach teams but he’s on track for a huge score today, with 17 disposals, eight marks and 93 points at halftime.

It’s not totally out of the blue. Newman has scored over 100 in four of his past five games before today, and can go big – he has scores of 148 v Collingwood and 147 v Sydney this season.

4:25pm: CHARLIE MIA

More than 6000 SuperCoaches traded in Charlie Curnow this week ahead of what looked like a tasty match-up against Richmond.

But Ben Miller has done a ripping job so far on the Coleman Medallist, who has just three disposals for the game closing on halftime.

One of them was a goal and another a goal assist, helping him to 30 SuperCoach points.

4:17pm: MILESTONE MAN

Zac Williams boots his second goal in his 150th game to give Carlton some breathing space.

There’s a new round of position changes coming in SuperCoach this week and Williams is locked in to become a DEF-FWD after his successful move to attack since round 8.

4:10pm: TIGERS NOT LYING DOWN

Liam Baker, Tim Taranto and Jacob Koschitzke have answered the Blues’ challenge.

Toby Nankervis is the forgotten man in the SuperCoach ruck club but he’s been in red-hot form lately, with a five-round average of 124.8, and he’s flying again today with 65 points midway through the second term.

4:02pm: BLUES GO BANG, BANG, BANG

Carlton has put a gap on Richmond with three goals in the first four-and-a-half minutes of the second term – via Lachie Fogarty, Matthew Owies and Elijah Hollands.

Nic Newman has jumped to 72 SuperCoach points.

3:50pm: QUARTER-TIME AT THE MCG

The Tigers are putting up a fight against their traditional enemy.

Patrick Cripps had a ridiculous first quarter – 14 disposals, three tackles, 60 SuperCoach points.

Charlie Curnow was a total non-factor until late in time-on when he marked outside 50 and unloaded to put Carlton in front. He has 20 SuperCoach points at the first change.

Tiger first-gamer Jacob Blight ($102k DEF) has started well with 17 points.

3:42pm: FULL TIME

A huge game from Jack Sinclair – he’ll be around $600k if you want to try to trade him in this week.

Aliir Aliir was huge in defence, demolishing Max King.

Jack Steele came home strong to finish with 95 points, and it could have been more if a shot from 50m with five minutes left had not fallen just short.

3:35pm: PORT HOLDS ON

A big tackle from Mitch Georgiades on Jack Steele has won Port Adelaide the game.

He missed from 25m out but eating up 30 seconds was enough to wind down the clock and end a three-match losing streak.

3:32pm: WE’VE GOT THE CLOSE ONE

Port is clinging to a one-point lead at Marvel Stadium with under two minutes remaining.

3:24pm: BLUES OPEN SCORING

Carlton has first blood at the MCG after capitalising on a horror turnover from Tiger veteran Kamdyn McIntosh.

Patrick Cripps was the beneficiary and he hands off to Sam Walsh who makes no mistake.

3:17pm: ARIE STEPS UP

He’s had a quiet game but Arie Schoenmaker has absolutely hoofed one from inside the centre square to the teeth of goal – where Jack Higgins picks up the scraps and levels the scores with 13 minutes to play.

3:11pm: WHERE’S DAN?

Half-backs have made a habit of putting up big SuperCoach totals against St Kilda this year but Dan Houston isn’t cashing in today.

He’s had 13 touches and sits on 50 SuperCoach points early in the final term.

Meanwhile Saints sub Cooper Sharman has narrowed the margin to seven points.

3:05pm: THREE QUARTER-TIME

Two big late blows from the Power give them the edge at the final change.

Sinclair, Butters and Rozee slowed a little that term but Jason Horne-Francis was enormous.

2:55pm: SUBS ARE LIVE

Both teams have activated their subs late in the third term.

St Kilda has subbed off Tom Campbell (tactical), replacing him with Cooper Sharman.

Todd Marshall is off for Port Adelaide, with first-gamer Will Lorenz on the field for the first time.

Meanwhile, Power second-gamer Logan Evans has broken the third quarter drought with his first AFL goal – after a rare kick-in clanger from Jack Sinclair.

2:53pm: POINT FOR POINT

After going goal for goal in the first half, it’s been a battle in the third term.

Both sides have kicked 0.3 for the quarter, with the Saints the latest team to blow an opportunity – Mitch Owens gathered near the boundary line and found Max King in the goalsquare, who threw it on his boot under pressure and sprayed it to the right.

Anthony Hudson: “They’ve found another way to miss.”

2:25pm: MARSHALL LAW

The late inclusion of Tom Campbell has allowed Rowan Marshall to spend more time forward, and he’s been St Kilda’s most dangerous forward with three goals, and he just missed a shot for a fourth after a big contested mark.

He needs some help from the Saints’ other forwards. Max King has one mark and one behind while Mitch Owens is also playing forward and has just two disposals for the game.

Jack Higgins has looked lively at times but is yet to kick a goal.

2:24pm: CARLTON LATE CHANGE

The Blues have dropped a SuperCoach bomb, making a late change for today’s game against Richmond.

Tom De Koning is out – ending his insane run of close to best-on-ground performances that delivered SuperCoach scores of 131, 140, 146 and 176 in his past four games.

Marc Pittonet is the late in.

The Blues say: “De Koning will miss today’s game due to soreness as a result of last week’s clash with Geelong. He is expected to be available next week against Greater Western Sydney.”

Richmond is unchanged.

The starting subs will be Sam Banks (Richmond) and George Hewett (Carlton).

2:18pm: HALFTIME

These teams can’t be separated after two entertaining quarters.

Jack Sinclair has been everywhere and Zak Butters and Connor Rozee are both flying for Port Adelaide.

One player finding the going a bit tougher this week is Arie Schoenmaker. The young Saints defender was super impressive on debut two weeks ago, but so far he has just eight disposals and 25 SuperCoach points.

Halftime Saints v Power SuperCoach leaders.

1:59pm: A TALE OF TWO JACKS

The Phantom has pulled one of the great trade moves this round, bringing in Jack Sinclair as a POD premium for the run home.

Sinclair is coming off scores of 147 and 135 in his past two games, and he is on his way to another huge total with 14 disposals at 100 per cent efficiency and 70 SuperCoach points – and we aren’t even halfway through the second quarter.

It’s a different story for Jack Steele, who has battled his way to eight disposals and 26 points.

1:45ppm: QUARTER-TIME

Some big SuperCoach names at the top of the leaderboard – a nice change from many of the games in round 16 so far!

Marcus Windhager has his work cut out following Zak Butters, who has an impressive ratio of five disposals and six contested posssesions plus two tackles and a goal.

1:40pm: ROZEE’S HOT START

Port Adelaide captain Connor Rozee was traded into more than 18,000 SuperCoach teams this week, and he’s delivering so far.

He’s racked up 11 disposals in the first quarter and 38 SuperCoach points – not bad for $410k.

1:31pm: ‘WHAT A JOKE’: UMP PINGS PORT

Rowan Marshall kicks the Saints’ second – and ends a run of four straight Port Adelaide goals – after Jordon Sweet becomes the second player in a month to be penalised for not giving the ball back to the umpire.

After being tackled by Marshall in the Saints’ forward 50 the umpire called a ball-up, and Sweet gave the footy to teammate Ollie Wines.

By the letter of the law he has to give it to the umpire, and Marshall was happy (if perhaps a bit surprised) to accept the free kick.

Jordan Lewis wasn’t happy with the call on the Fox Footy coverage. His analysis: “What a joke”.

1:20pm: BUTTERS’ PERFECT RESPONSE

This is how to ease those nerves! Perfect ruckwork from Jordan Sweet and Zak Butters is showing no signs of being bothered by a Marcus Windhager tag – he’s the leading SuperCoach scorer on the ground with 26 points.

1:17pm: SAINTS ON THE BOARD

St Kilda has the first goal of the game via Hunter Clark.

Very early but you would be nervous if you were a Port Adelaide fan, the Power have already coughed up a couple of bad turnovers coming out of defence.

1:11pm: WE’RE AWAY

Marcus Windhager has gone straight to Zak Butters for the opening bounce – no huge surprise there. Butters has let his frustrations show when given close attention in recent weeks, how will he respond today?

Jack Steele and Jason Horne-Francis are going head-to-head in the centre square.

The starting benches are:

St Kilda: Tom Campbell, Paddy Dow, Arie Schoenmaker, Darcy Wilson, Cooper Sharman (sub).

Port Adelaide: Travis Boak, Logan Evans, Ollie Lord, Ollie Wines, Will Lorenz (sub)

12:20pm: LATE CHANGE

The final team sheets are in and the Saints have left out Seb Ross for today’s clash against the Power. His replacement is back-up ruckman Tom Campbell.

Port Adelaide goes in as named.

The starting subs are Cooper Sharman (St Kilda) and debutant Will Lorenz (Port Adelaide).
