AFL 2024: Relive updates, SuperCoach scores for St Kilda v Western Bulldogs

Seven Western Bulldogs cracked the SuperCoach ton in a massacre of St Kilda at Marvel Stadium. Relive the SuperCoach updates and see our takeaways from the Dogs’ thrashing of the Saints.

SuperCoach AFL: Buy, Hold, Sell Round 6

The Western Bulldogs have eased the pressure of a noisy week by thrashing St Kilda at Marvel Stadium.

The Dogs set up the 10-goal win by kicking seven goals to one in the opening term.

Aaron Naughton kicked six goals while Marcus Bontempelli and Cody Weightman slotted three.

Bailey Dale was electric across half back with 39 disposals.

THE THREE TAKEAWAYS

GET HUGO GARCIA IN!

SuperCoaches across the country will need to manufacture a way to get St Kilda rookie Hugo Garcia into their side.

Garcia, who costs just $117,300, was one of the Saints’ best with 69 points.

He had a break even of just 3 points, which makes him all the more attractive to coaches looking to make a quick profit.

FIRST-QUARTER CODY

Cody Weightman finished agonisingly short of a SuperCoach century but it was set up by a characteristically hot opening term.

Weightman kicked three majors inside 10 minutes during the seven-goal-to-one first quarter.

He has kicked 14 goals this year and nine of them have come in the first quarter.

Weightman isn’t owned by many SuperCoaches due to his large break even (110) but if he continues to get close to 100, it could be a risk some coaches are willing to take.

BAILEY DALE GOES NUCLEAR

Western Bulldogs’ defender Bailey Dale will clock out of Thursday’s match with a case of leather poisoning after doing as he pleased across half back.

After being named as the Bulldogs’ sub last Friday, Dale gathered 39 disposals to finish with a whopping 176 SuperCoach points.

Dale has averaged just 68 points this year but almost tripled that to finish with 27 more than the next best on the ground.

The 75 SuperCoaches that traded him out this week will be close to pulling their hair out.

9:54: HORROR NIGHT GETS WORSE FOR SAINTS

St Kilda’s night has gone from bad to worse with an injury to substitute Dan Butler.

Butler, who came into the game at the expense of Zak Jones, has left the ground with a dejected look on his face while holding his right hamstring.

Butler has had just three handballs tonight.

9:46: BONT IS BACK

After a quieter night last Friday, Western Bulldogs superstar Marcus Bontempelli is back to his best.

Bontempelli has two goals to go along with his 21 disposals in the Bulldogs’ drubbing of St Kilda.

He, along with four other Bulldogs, have already scored 100 or more SuperCoach points.

9:31: 3QT — IT’S GETTING UGLY

The Western Bulldogs’ massacre of St Kilda is showing no signs of slowing down as the Dogs take a 71-point lead into the final change.

Aaron Naughton has six majors while Adam Treloar, Bailey Dale and Jack Macrae have brought their own Sherrin.

The Saints have had no answers for the straight-kicking Dogs, who are yet to miss from 12 set shots.

The Dogs also have the top eight SuperCoach leaders on the ground and are tracking for a huge list of centurions.

Dan Butler has come into the game for Zak Jones and Ryley Sanders is about to come on for Laitham Vandameer.

9:23: IT’S A SUPERCOACH BONANZA

The Western Bulldogs are lining up to fill their boots against a sluggish St Kilda.

Bailey Daile, Adam Treloar and Aaron Naughton have already crunched SuperCoach centuries while Jack Macrae, Marcus Bontempelli and Tim English are all on their way.

Another goal from Cody Weightman may also see him sneak over the line.

9:16: ‘ I WAS SAYING BOO-KU’

Western Bulldogs fans have coined a new piece of recognition for defender Buku Khamis but it wouldn’t be hard to confuse it for disgust.

The Dogs fans are holding the first syllable in Buku, making it sound like Khamis is receiving a frosty reception.

The defender has been excellent tonight, taking seven marks behind the ball.

9:10: GALLAGHER DOWN INTO THE ROOMS

Western Bulldogs’ young gun Harvey Gallagher has gone down into the rooms after coming off second best during some friendly fire.

Running back with the flight, Gallagher collided with teammate Rory Lobb.

He took a long time to get off the ground and has not emerged from the rooms since.

If Gallagher is to be subbed off, he will fall short of his break even.

Ryley Sanders is the Bulldogs’ sub.

9:03: HE CAN’T MISS

Aaron Naughton has kicked his fifth goal just two minutes into the third quarter.

The left-footer has 88 SuperCoach points, relishing in the absence of fellow forward Jamarra Ugle-Hagan.

9:03: THE MASSACRE CONTINUES

St Kilda’s Thursday night nightmare is rolling on, with the Western Bulldogs extending their lead in the opening stages of the third term.

Rhylee West’s clever snap has pushed the Dogs in front by 55 points.

8:56: IS ALL-AUSTRALIAN DALE BACK?

Western Bulldogs’ defender Bailey Dale is putting up his best SuperCoach performance for some time with 81 points at the main break.

The dashing defender has 15 touches, seven marks and a goal already, which is beyond his 2024 average of 68.

Is he back or is it just St Kilda letting defenders score again?

8:41: SAINTS’ PERFORMANCE UNREFLECTED

St Kilda had the best of the Western Bulldogs for 2o minutes during the second quarter but a heavy fade away late in the term has resulted in the Dogs adding to their quarter-time lead.

The Saints have averaged just 73 points against this year but have already let through 76 to the main break.

The Dogs led by 37 at quarter time and now lead by 49.

Aaron Naughton has four majors while Adam Treloar has an impressive 86 SuperCoach points.

8:34: TRELOAR BURST SAINTS’ BUBBLE

Western Bulldogs’ midfielder Adam Treloar has popped St Kilda’s comeback bubble with a late second-quarter goal.

The Saints had kicked back-to-back goals and were making their way back into the match.

A late goal and then the follow up clearance from Treloar meant the Saints had nothing to show for their strong second quarter.

Treloar has 79 SuperCoach points.

8:27: GARCIA’S FIRST LIFTS SAINTS

St Kilda second-gamer Hugo Garcia has lifted his side by kicking his first AFL goal.

It’s also the Saints’ second successive goal for the first time tonight.

The lead still stands at 33 points but the Saints have had a much better term.

Garcia is an excellent rookie option at just $117,300.

8:21: DALE DELIGHT

Bailey Dale is running amok at Marvel Stadium, showing he’s certainly never to be the one handed Luke Beveridge’s substitute vest ever again.

Dale, after starting as the Dogs’ sub last week, has 13 disposals — with 10 kicks at 100 per cent — and a long-range goal halfway through the second quarter.

He also leads all with 68 SuperCoach points.

8:15: BONT IS BUILDING

Marcus Bontempelli is starting to heat up this second quarter with a couple of neat early possessions.

St Kilda is throwing everything at the Dogs to get back into this match, but the captain is leading the resistance.

Bontempelli has rocketed to 38 SuperCoach points from his 10 disposals.

8:04: QT — BULLDOGS BREATHE FIRE IN RELENTLESS OPENING TERM

The Western Bulldogs have come out breathing fire under the roof of Marvel Stadium, piling on seven first-quarter majors against St Kilda.

Both sides were locked at one goal apiece before the Bulldogs — led by forwards Cody Weightman and Aaron Naughton — catapulted to a 37-point lead.

Bailey Dale and Adam Treloar have been big SuperCoach ticks while it appears Ed Richards is filling Tom Liberatore’s inside midfielder shoes.

8:00: SIX STRAIGHT FOR SIZZLING DOGS

Aaron Naughton has put the Western Bulldogs up by 37 points in red time of the first term.

The Dogs have been relentless since St Kilda’s first goal and it’s largely been through three goals to each of Naughton and Cody Weightman.

Weightman has 57 SuperCoach points while Naughton has 47.

7:49: FLEA HEATS UP

Cody Weightman has slotted two majors in as many minutes.

His first came through a free kick and his second came from his forward craft, sneaking away from Liam Stocker.

He’s kicked 13 goals this year and eight have come in the opening term.

7:48: FULL HOUSE

Ross Lyon’s defend-first game plan is on show early in this one, with all of St Kilda’s 18 being inside the back 50.

It didn’t work however, as a free kick resulted in Cody Weightman kicking the Dogs’ second.

Adam Treloar leads all players with 28 SuperCoach points.

7:40: ED REPLACES LIBBA

It appears Ed Richards is going to tackle the Tom Liberatore role as the Western Bulldogs’ inside midfielder.

Richards, known for his ball use across half back, has ventured into the past two centre bounces.

Richards has a SuperCoach break even of 89 this round.

7:32: NAUGHTON ON THE BOARD

Aaron Naughton has got the Western Bulldogs off to a strong start with the first major of the night.

Naughton is one of many Bulldogs needing a good outing and he’s made the perfect start.

7:30: TICK TOCK

The AFL is tracking down the American sport path with the start time of matches becoming more of a guideline than a rule.

Tonight’s match started two minutes late, following a trend of a handful of games already this season.

6:43: ROSS BACKS BEVO

St Kilda coach Ross Lyon has backed the under fire Luke Beveridge, showing his support behind the premiership coach on Fox Footy’s pre-game coverage.

Lyon said he was failing to understand the pressure on the Dogs.

“I am not understanding the noise and the beef around them ... I am really concerned about what’s coming tonight,” Lyon said.

6:33: FINAL TEAMS, SANDERS THE SUB

Luke Beveridge has thrown another spanner in the works of more than two thirds of SuperCoach sides by naming rookie Ryley Sanders as the Western Bulldogs’ substitute.

Sanders was subbed out last week and responded by showing disdain towards the decision.

“Not many of us really enjoy the sub factor, especially the subbing out aspect, but it’s a steep learning curve for Sando,” Beveridge said this week.

“He’s going to be such an important player for the football club and he’s learning all the time.

“Part of that is understanding that from time to time he may be that guy who comes off the ground, so we’ll work through it with him.”

Dan Butler will be St Kilda’s sub.

Neither side has had a late change.

The Western Bulldogs are confident star forward Jamarra Ugle-Hagan will return for their round 7 clash against Fremantle as he returns home to south-west Victoria to work through family concerns.

Ugle-Hagan will not play in the Dogs’ clash against St Kilda on Thursday night after sparkling form against Essendon and has officially been listed as missing through “personal reasons”.

He remains in good spirits and trained well this week but has been given time away to return home to address a private family issue.

The Dogs will give him all the time he needs and will not pressure him to return.

But with a nine-day break leading into their away clash at Optus Stadium he is likely to be back at the club next week.

The Dogs again overlooked All Australian Caleb Daniel, who will play in the VFL once more on Saturday.

They are attempting to reinvigorate his season and will again play him at half back after he had 26 possessions last week, hitting 16 of his 17 targets by foot.

Bailey Dale was the sub last week and received less than 40 minutes of game time, and with the Dogs preferring not to pick a player as the sub twice in a row he is likely to start the game.

Top ten pick Ryley Sanders is a candidate to be the sub with the Dogs keen to keep him in the senior side despite quieter form in recent weeks.
