JACOB Weitering’s impressive debut in Blues colours has assured him a senior berth in Carlton’s season-opener against Richmond.
The scoreboard was largely irrelevant as Carlton went down to Essendon by 60 points at Ikon Park, but Blues fans would have gone home excited after the No.1 draft pick delivered a performance that belied his inexperience.
The 18-year-old showed outstanding composure in defence to finish with 19 disposals, nine marks and 99 SuperCoach points.
Zach Tuohy was the highest ranked player on the field with 133 points from 18 disposals and seven marks, while Nick Graham (109 points from 24 touches) stood up in the absence of several Carlton stars.
But it was an otherwise dirty afternoon for the Blues at their spiritual home as Essendon ran rampant with Brendon Goddard (131 points), Zach Merrett (124) and David Zaharakis among their best.
Goddard booted three goals, which included a supergoal, among his 15 possessions and Zaharakis lead the midfield with a game-high 28 disposals.
No.4 pick Darcy Parish (74 points) was hard at the contest after he was introduced in the second quarter and can also be pencilled in for Round 1, and Mitch Brown, likely to be in most backlines, was also a standout with 104 points.
Meanwhile, Fremantle star Nat Fyfe reinforced why he should be first picked in everyone’s team with a dazzling 26-disposal, two-goal performance that generated 138 points.
Tommy Sheridan was equally damaging with 128 points from 28 possession and Michael Barlow backed up from last week’s 131-point effort with 19 touches and 92 points.
For the second week Matt Crouch was among Adelaide’s best, gathering 26 disposals and 117 points.
Rory Laird (121), Richard Douglas (117) and Rory Atkins (103) also posted big scores for the Crows.
