Super Rankings: Star defenders Mark Blicavs and Harris Andrews rocket up the list

MARK Blicavs has been a revelation since being moved to the backline. But the squeeze will soon be on with Harry Taylor and Lachie Henderson set to return. Who will be pushed out? See who else is firing in the latest SUPER RANKINGS.

IT is not often two full-backs occupy two lofty positions on this list.

But Harris Andrews (Brisbane Lions) and Mark Blicavs (Geelong) waltzed in after their negating roles on the weekend.

How do you ignore Blicavs, the former steeplechaser who kept Coleman Medal fancy Ben Brown goalless on Saturday?

Blicavs’ form as a key defender will create a selection headache for Cats coach Chris Scott very soon. When Harry Taylor and Lachie Henderson are both fit, who misses out? Blicavs has to play there and Jack Henry would be stiff to miss out, so it will be an interesting call by Geelong’s match committee.

As for Andrews, he is on the list for the second week running. Last week he kept Brown to two goals despite North’s abundance of entries and on Sunday he was best-afield against Essendon.

Is there a better spoiler in the game? Perhaps not. After the bye Andrews will likely play on Jeremy Cameron and if he takes another scalp the All-Australian selectors will have to take notice.

Blicavs’ little bald mate, Gary, has put the footy world on notice. How many times will observers question Ablett, only to be made to look foolish very quickly?

Ablett’s 310th game was his best for the season and his last-quarter goal on the run was vintage Gaz. Ablett has been No. 2 for two consecutive weeks now, and has probably picked up another six Brownlow Medal votes.

This week he is preparing to take on the premier, Richmond, at the MCG in front of about 85,000. Meanwhile his old club, Gold Coast, is in a potential wooden-spoon playoff against St Kilda in front of about 10,000.

Gee, it’s good to be home.
