Jack Macrae stays atop Herald Sun Super Rankings but Ando and Robbo can’t agree on weekly No.1

A COUPLE of the game’s superstars couldn’t make the top three this week as JON ANDERSON and MARK ROBINSON cast their eye over the best performances from Round 8 of the AFL season.

THE depth of Round 8 was highlighted by the fact that we couldn’t find room for a pair of guns named Jack Macrae and Trent Cotchin in our top three.

But how do you ignore “bolting” Ben Ronke, Robbie Gray’s six goals in the Showdown or Ben Cunnington’s record-breaking 32-contested possessions?

For the record my colleague Mark Robinson wanted Gray at No.1, basing his reasoning on the quality of the game and the fact that he was the catalyst in Port’s remarkable third quarter recovery.

But I refused to budge on Ronke, yet another product of that proud footballing school of St Bernard’s, or the Snow Dogs as they are affectionately known.

How many third gamers in today’s AFL world will boot seven? Hopefully it’s the start of big things to come because the game always requires young stars.

Cunnington is the best fisherman to play the game since the days of Rex Hunt, an old-style country footballer who thrives on the contest.

Gray is an older star, one who is a match winner, a player born for big moments.

And then there is Macrae who could easily be rivalling Nat Fyfe for the Brownlow lead, although he remains an unknown in terms of umpire recognition.

Rounding out the top five is Cotchin, who in a normal week could have been No.1, such was the complete nature of his game.

In terms of consistency this year, Fyfe and Macrae have appeared most often here as will be highlighted at season’s end when we select our very own All-Australian team based on these weekly rankings.
