Sam Newman spotted out and about with high-profile ‘friend’

Sam Newman has been spotted with a high-profile lady, setting rumours flying the four-times married star has found love again.

Geelong AFL great Sam Newman has tried to hose down whispers he has found love with a new companion.

The former Footy Show star, 77, has been seen at a number of events around Melbourne in recent months alongside fitness guru Sue Stanley, as the Herald Sun reported.

Asked about the possible romantic links, Newman was keen to quell any suggestions of a relationship between the high-profile pair.

“I am very happy to say I am a friend of hers and she is a friend of mine, but that is it,” Newman said.

“She is a girl friend of mine and that is two separate words: girl friend, not a girlfriend.”

Stanley has been a regular guest on Newman’s You Cannot Be Serious podcast.

A fitness world champion among a variety of athletics achievements, Stanley was inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame in 1998 and was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for services to sport in 2020.

“Sue is a good friend of mine,” said Newman, who has been married four times.

“If she has a function to go to and she needs someone to go with her, I go, and vice versa.

“I have been to a few things with her and she has been to a few with me, but that is it.

“We are companions and (the dating rumours) is just not true.

“I am her handbag and that is it.”

The duo attended this year’s Sport Australia Hall of Fame function and were among the guests invited to newsreader Peter Hitchener’s 50th anniversary party in Ringwood in late October.

Newman has previously addressed the rumours on his podcast.

“We have made tongue-in-cheek comments about it,” he said.

Newman went through a devastating loss in 2021 when his wife Amanda Brown suddenly passed away at their Docklands home at age 50.

The couple had been together for 20 years before officially tying the knot in November 2020.
