FORMER Richmond captain Chris Newman will not line up against Melbourne tomorrow.

The Tigers today withdrew Newman from their team with groin soreness.

Matt Dea will replace Newman against the Dees, while David Astbury has been added to the emergencies list.

CARLTON will unleash exciting forward Troy Menzel tomorrow against Port Adelaide at Etihad Stadium.

Younger brother of luckless Geelong forward Daniel, Menzel had an interrupted pre-season batting niggling injuries.

He has been a standout in recent weeks playing for Carlton's VFL-affiliate Northern Blues.

Menzel had LARS reconstructive surgery on his knee as a 16 year old.

The Blues have also axed Shaun Hampson for Sunday's match.

Chris Yarran (hamstring), Eddie Betts (suspension) and Ellard (hamstring) will also sit out.

Richmond welcomes back captain Trent Cotchin after a week out with knee soreness while Melbourne has made five changes.

Demons ruckman Mark Jamar will take on the Tigers alongside No.4 pick Jimmy Toumpas and and co-captain Jack Trengove.

Melbourne will be without mature-aged recruit Shannon Byrnes, Colin Sylvia (suspension), Dean Kent, Jake Spencer and Jack Viney.

Collingwood remains hopeful Dale Thomas will miss only two matches, but can give no guarantees about when he will return to AFL football.

Thomas met with his specialist and the clubs medical staff yesterday where he was told to scale back his training to allow his troublesome right foot to recover.

It is hoped that rest might settle Thomas' issue down.

The 25-year-old midfielder will miss Saturdays blockbuster game with Geelong and the following week against Sydney both at the MCG after pulling up sore at training this week.

The Cats have been strengthened by the return of Joel Corey, while Josh Hunt and Luke Ball will both play their first matches for 2013.

He must play VFL, but the Bombers will welcome back Brent Stanton and Paddy Ryder for tomorrow's clash with Brisbane Lions.

Thomas remains no certainty to return against Lions at the Gabba in Round 10, with his availability dependent on how much work he can do in the meantime.

Collingwood director of football Geoff Walsh said the medical advice was that cutting back on training might allow his foot to settle down.

"The medical opinion is that if Dale has his training scaled back, the load-bearing work reduced for a couple of weeks, then the ankle should settle and he will be able to resume full training,'' Walsh said.

Asked if Thomas was a certain starter for the Lions game on May 31, Walsh said: "It depends on how (much) he does in those two weeks.''

Thomas had scans on his ankle after leaving the training track early on Wednesday.

Walsh said it was the first time Thomas had felt sore since his comeback from pre-season surgery.

Thomas underwent surgery on the same ankle in the off-season, which delayed his start to 2013.

Thomas, who becomes a restricted free agent at the end of the season, has played four AFL matches this season, spending much of the past fortnight playing off half-back.

It was the second injury blow for the Magpies this week, with Alex Fasolo ruled out for the rest of the season with a fracture of the navicular bone in his right foot.

Richmond was dealt a triple blow with Ivan Maric (ankle) joining Shane Tuck and Chris Knights as sidelined Tigers.

But Trent Cotchin and forwards Ty Vickery and Aaron Edwards headline six possible changes ahead of the Tigers' clash with Melbourne on Sunday.

The Dees have lost Jack Viney (toe) and Shannon Byrnes (wrist) along with the suspended Colin Sylvia, but they have named Mark Jamar and Jack Trengove.

The Western Bulldogs swung four changes ahead of their crunch clash with Gold Coast, recalling mature-age recruits Brett Goodes and Koby Stevens along with prized draftees Jackson Macrae and Jake Stringer.

Carlton will again be without star Bryce Gibbs. The Blues have also lost Chris Yarran, Eddie Betts and Dave Ellard ahead of Sunday's crunch duel with Port Adelaide.
