Thirteen things you might have missed during Round 10
BRIAN Taylor’s regular post-match segment was pulled on Friday night after Collingwood overran the Bulldogs. Why? Plus Brisbane’s banner fail and what could be the AFL’s worst tattoo. 13 THINGS YOU MISSED THIS WEEKEND
AFL News
Don't miss out on the headlines from AFL News. Followed categories will be added to My News.
JUST how observant were you during Round 10?
It was hard to miss Melbourne rocketing into premiership contention with a win over Adelaide, Essendon getting its season back on track and North Melbourne taking another step towards finals.
THE TACKLE: ROBBO’S ROUND 10 LIKES AND DISLIKES
SUPER LADDER: COX PUTS FINALS WITHIN REACH FOR PIES
But did you also catch a few of the off-Broadway highlights from the weekend?
From the lack of Roaming Brian to an Eddie McGuire clip and the story behind Nathan Buckley’s beard, here are the 10 things you missed in Round 10.
WHERE WAS ROAMING BRIAN?
It has produced some of the best (and most awkward) football moments of the season.
But on Friday night, fans were left empty for the first time this year. Where was Roaming Brian?
Well it seems the Magpies aren’t big fans of the concept and informed Channel 7 they wouldn’t be taking part after their win against the Bulldogs.
“Collingwood don’t like doing the roaming part. They don’t like that so they’re not up for it,” Brian Taylor explained.
Based on his next comment, it was clear a rather flat BT wasn’t rapt with his former club’s decision.
“You’d think they’d be able to conjure up something for us but they chose not to. That’s their right.”
On Sunday, BT was roaming further than ever, delivering pre-match commentary from Alice Springs before the Melbourne vs Adelaide game.
PIE THROWS HIS WEIGHT AROUND
Collingwood didn’t assign a tagger to Jack Macrae on Friday night but Adam Treloar wanted to make sure there was some physical pressure on the Bulldogs ball magnet.
This effort in the second quarter didn’t quite go to plan but given the Pies outscored the Dogs 81-22 from this point and Treloar finished with 40 disposals to Macrae’s 30, we’re not prepared to say it had no impact at all.

DOES CLARKO REALLY RUN THE AFL?
Eddie McGuire isn’t one to hide his feelings. And during the opening term of the Richmond and St Kilda clash on Saturday, the Collingwood president delivered a sneaky whack to Alastair Clarkson and Gillon McLachlan for their now infamous coffee catch-up.
In commentary for Fox Footy, McGuire was calling the action when Dustin Martin was pinged for a dubious blocking free kick during the first quarter.
Clearly unhappy with the umpire’s decision, McGuire let rip.
“I don’t think it (the free kick) was there at all,” he said.
“They are red hot on blocking at the moment. Alastair Clarkson (is) showing that he does run the AFL. You have a cup of tea with Gillon McLachlan and you can change the entire rules.”
DON’T CALL IT A COMEBACK
The Barunga Bullet himself, former Tiger Relton Roberts, dominated in his East Kimberley Football League debut over the weekend.
Playing for the Waringarri Crows, Roberts finished the match with four goals and was ultra-lively up forward.
With things going so well at Tiger Land, we are watching this space as to a possible rookie list spot for Roberts in 2019.
‘IT SHOULD HAVE ITS OWN INSTAGRAM PAGE’
Move over Max Gawn. There is a new top beard in the AFL.
In recent weeks, Nathan Buckley’s beard has been causing plenty of chatter on social media.
Finally, after the club’s win over the Western Bulldogs, he was ready to divulge the secret behind it.
“There is a particular part of our game that…we just needed to sharpen up our intent on it,” he explained on SEN.
“The players, if they keep a clean sheet on it then the coaches weren’t allowed to shave. If they let a goal up then the players weren’t allowed to shave.
“Since we have brought that in a month ago, there has been three clean sheets.”
Given the Pies are back in the eight and playing their best football in years, Buckley is in no hurry to move away from the beard. In fact, he wants to take it global.
“Do you think I should go social with it? It should have its own Instagram page. I think the people should speak about what I should do with it.”
#WINNIG
The Brisbane cheer squad is the latest to feature a one-metre high spelling blunder, calling on the team to kick a “winnig score” against the Swans.
The Lions’ social media team took it with good humour, tweeting a photo of the banner with the caption “we all make mistakes”.
Unfortunately, Twitter users have good memories and some Collingwood fans were quick to remind the Lions of their dig at Collingwood after its “tonihgt” banner blooper earlier in the season.

WHY WE LOVE EDDIE
If you needed any more evidence that Eddie Betts is a champion person as well as a champion footballer, here it is.
Even though his side had just been smashed by 91 points, Betts was determined to thank all the local fans who turned out for yesterday’s match in Alice Springs.
Betts spent more than 30 minutes after the game taking selfies and signing autographs for fans.
In total, he would have spoken to more than 100 supporters.
Game long over, belted by 15 goals, yet Eddie Betts has spent the last 30 minutes taking selfies and signing autographs for every single waiting fan. A few hundred down, and a few to go. No one going home empty handed. #AFLDeesCrows pic.twitter.com/lnqC6FhvEC

#ASKINGFORAFRIEND
Everyone involved with the Collingwood Football Club breathed a sigh of relief on Saturday afternoon when it was announced Mason Cox had avoided suspension for his bump on Jason Johannisen.
Instead the big American was handed a $2000 fine by the Match Review Officer.
However, the decision left Cox a little bit confused about how much he should make the cheque out for.
“Is that in Aussie dollars or USD? #AskingForAFriend”, he tweeted after the decision.
With our dollar currently buying .76 US cents, hopefully for Cox’s sake the AFL agrees local currency will get the job done.

OPEN THE AFL TATTOO FILE
There are some interesting tattoos in the AFL and this one from Bailey Williams is right up there.
Williams’ leg art saying “Wheres my daddy” was snapped by AFL Media photographer Michael Wilson on Friday night.
Hopefully one day we find out the story behind it.
YOU CAN’T SAY THAT
When you win the medal for best on ground, you can usually say anything you want in the post-match interview. Anything except … that!
Young Magpie Tom Phillips made the cardinal sin on Friday night when he dropped an f-bomb after being presented with the Charlie Sutton/Bob Rose medal.
Phillips took to social media after the game to suggest an appropriate punishment.

IS THIS THE WORST KICK OF THE YEAR?
If one kick can sum up a club’s season, it was this one from Jarryn Geary on Saturday afternoon.
With the Saints down by 13 points going into the half-time break, Geary had the chance to hand his side a serious momentum boost if he could nail a torpedo from 70 metres out.
The result was well, pretty much what we’ve come to expect when the Saints have a set shot for goal.

POTENTIAL STREAKERS TAKE NOTE
Players aren’t the only ones struggling with congestion on the footy field.
It seems the problem has also spread to the security guards at GMHBA Stadium.
Following Geelong’s win on Saturday night, at least 25 security guards took it upon themselves to patrol the centre square.
Overkill? Maybe, but the move has sent potential streakers back to the drawing board.

THE WHITFIELD WIGGLE
The Giants’ season has gone off the rails but it hasn’t dampened the spirits of Lachie Whitfield judging by this video filmed before Saturday’s clash against Essendon by teammate Zac Williams.
It was an interesting way to celebrate your 100th game, but we’re tipping the mood wasn't quite as jovial after the 35-point loss.
