Hawthorn midfield recruit Tom Scully has moved to temper expectations surrounding his long-awaited AFL comeback after his debut for the Hawks was confirmed.

Scully was on Thursday night named in the Hawks’ final team for Saturday’s clash against the Western Bulldogs at the MCG — a year after his last AFL game for Greater Western Sydney when he seriously injured his ankle.

“I’ve certainly been waiting for this moment … there’s been a lot of commentary around when I would return and when I would play again,’’ Scully said.

“But, for me, I haven’t really been focused on that, I’ve had a pretty clear plan from the outset outlined by the guys here at Hawthorn.

“I’ve had great confidence that I would get back and this week is another step forward.”

Scully, however, said he was realistic about the level that he would be able to play at initially after a year out of the game.

“I’ve had a really good last six weeks in terms of my preparation in training,’’ Scully told the Hawthorn website.

“But I have missed 12 months of football, so there’s no doubt I’m probably not going to be at my very best.

“But I’ll certainly bring my best effort and play my role – I’ll be striving to do that as best I can.”

Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson said yesterday Scully was “fit and raring to go” for his debut at his third AFL club after ramping up his preparation in the past two months.

“He has spent the best part of the last six or eight weeks in performance phase now to get himself ready to play,” Clarkson said.

“We held him back deliberately last week and de-loaded him after a really good training block and he is really fit and raring to go.’’

The former Giant and Demon moved to Hawthorn in last year’s trade period after seven seasons at the Giants.

Clarkson conceded over the pre-season that there was “an element of risk” for the Hawks taking him on while recovering from a significant ankle injury.

Despite the uncertainty over his injury, Clarkson said the Hawks had not been surprised by Scully’s rapid progress since arriving at the club.

“It hasn’t staggered us because we did all our due diligence around his ankle at the time,’’ Clarkson said.

“We were able to get a look at all the scans and stuff that had occurred in the previous 12 months. He is such a pro.”

But Clarkson conceded Scully’s ankle was likely to require ongoing management in the future.

“He is always going to have some hiccups with that ankle because he has got an ankle joint now that has been subjected to a fair amount of trauma,’’ Clarkson said.

“So he’s recovered sufficiently from that to be able to still play some good AFL footy, but his training loads and playing loads are going to have to lower a little bit compared to what he is used to. So that’s a challenge for any player to get their head around.’’

Clarkson said fellow recruit Chad Wingard was a “week or two” behind Scully in his recovery from a calf injury.
