Raft of rule changes revealed for 2023 AFLW season

While the league and players remain at loggerheads in relation to the length of the season, a host of rule changes for the upcoming AFLW campaign have been green-lit.

The AFL has given the green light to a raft of rule changes for the upcoming AFL Women’s season.

As the league and players remain at loggerheads in relation to the length of the season that will start on September 1, the AFL has on Thursday written to clubs to confirm four rule changes and a shift for the match review system.

The contents of the memo penned by acting general manager of football Laura Kane — seen by the Herald Sun — are set to be announced on Thursday afternoon.

Under the move, quarter length will be increased to 15 minutes plus time on, with the length of quarter breaks reduced.

In a bid to decrease congestion and ramp up scoring, boundary umpires will move 10 metres inside the boundary line for throw-ins when between the 50 metre arcs.

An interchange cap of 60 will also be introduced.

Runners will not be allowed to enter the field of play more than three times between the start of the quarter and the last three minutes of the quarter, for a maximum of 90 seconds.

They can enter the field after goals.

Fine structures for low-level classifiable offences and fixed financial sanctions have also been adjusted under the changes.

With the season just eight weeks away, the league is steadfast that the upcoming season remain at 10 home and away games and has formulated a fixture that it is ready to release pending player approval, though the AFL Players’ Association had been pushing at least 12 home-and-away games as it eyes full-time professionalism by 2026
