GWS Giants vs Collingwood: Key SuperCoach takeaways, full scores from opening round

A leg injury to Nick Daicos has thrown SuperCoach into a spin four days from round 1. Should we jump ship? Here’s what we learned from game two of opening round.

Friendly fire sees Briggs badly injured

Collingwood and GWS players made their case for SuperCoach selection on a day that didn’t go as many Magpie fans expected.

The Giants got the early jump on the back of a Finn Callaghan masterclass and Collingwood was playing catch-up all day. And things went from bad to worse when Nick Daicos limped off after halftime.

Here are the five big SuperCoach takeaways from game two of opening round. Scroll down to replay all today’s action.

DAICOS DANGER

Nick Daicos started the day in almost 65 per cent of SuperCoach teams but that number is a big watch now. Tagger Toby Bedford wore Daicos like a glove but the Pies superstar still managed a 50-point first half before an awkward landing in the third quarter forced him from the field for several lengthy stints, and to full-forward when he was on the ground as he limped away from contests. No doubt he’ll bounce back, but an early price drop looms, along with a round 3 bye. Is there a better way to spend $631k?

FINN ON FIRE

Is this the year of the $400k midfielder? After Will Day sent SuperCoaches into a spin on Friday night, Finn Callaghan ($441k) looked on another plane as he shredded Collingwood’s midfield with 33 disposals (at 85 per cent efficiency) and two goals. The pair join popular starting options Clayton Oliver and Adam Cerra in that awkward price bracket. Worth noting Callaghan’s price won’t change until after the Giants’ round 2 bye.

ROOKIES DO ENOUGH (WE HOPE)

None of Ed Allan, James Leake or Conor Stone shot the lights out but, like Ben Paton on Friday night, they all put enough on the board to all but lock in a start in round 1 – and potentially in thousands of SuperCoach teams. Allan is too pricey for most at $194k but the two Giants are both priced at $119k – Leake in DEF and Stone up FWD – and both look like solid bench picks after finishing with 64 points apiece.

KEEFFE LAMB TO RUCK SLAUGHTER

Lachie Keeffe manfully stepped into the ruck when Keiren Briggs was stretchered off in the first quarter, and was promptly annihilated by Darcy Cameron, who won the hitouts 37-12 and picked up 22 disposals to Keeffe’s eight for a 164-46 SuperCoach smackdown. Briggs will miss at least next week and a glance at the fixture reveals the Giants are up against ... Max Gawn. Oh boy.

PERRYMAN MAKES HIS CASE

Playing against his old club, Harry Perryman did what I suspect he’ll do most weeks this year – work hard, gather plenty of the footy (27 disposals) and score well in SuperCoach. He was on track to crack the ton for most of the afternoon but by the last quarter no Collingwood player was scoring apart from Cameron. Priced at $417k, Perryman will make money, but can you pick him ahead of players like Matt Roberts and Jayden Short at a similar price?
