Geelong injury list: Bailey Smith left off as Jake Kolodjashnij sidelined until back-half of the season

Bailey Smith required painkilling injections to get through his clash with his former side. Will he be ready to go face West Coast? Plus, it’s bad news for a premiership Cat.

Geelong has left Bailey Smith off its injury list despite his shin concern as premiership defender Jake Kolodjashnij is set to be sidelined until the back-half of the season.

Smith trained on Tuesday at GMHBA Stadium after he admitted post-game last Thursday that he received four painkilling injections.

The blistering midfielder said he only played because of his match-up against his former side the Western Bulldogs, with Geelong coach Chris Scott was unaware of the injury post-match.

The 24-year-old came out later than his teammates on Tuesday morning and ran a lap with runners on with a member of Geelong’s medical staff.

He then changed into footy boots and completed the rest of the session including drills, but he jogged with less intensity when his teammates lined up for sprint run throughs along the centre square.

The Cats did not put Tom Stewart on their injury list ahead of the Cats’ win over Collingwood in round eight, with the interceptor was ruled out later in the week and sidelined until round 11.

Connor O’Sullivan will be available to play after being managed last week and captain Patrick Dangerfield (hamstring) miss another week.

Jake Kolodjashnij’s injury wores have continued with the reliable defender to remain on the sidelines until the back-half of the season with a back concern related to his previous groin injury.

The 29-year-old has not featured at AFL level this season and managed just one VFL game before his back injury flared.

“Jake had been managing a groin injury through the first part of the year. Recently he returned to play however has developed back symptoms,” Mackie said.

“Our high performance and medical team should know more around a new return to play timeline over the next fortnight however our priority is to ensure that Jake is set up for to play consistently in the back half of the year.”

Injury-riddled ruck Toby Conway has moved from ‘TBC’ to ‘indefinite’ with the luckless tall increasing his training loads.

“Toby has progressed his training loads over the past month and has begun to integrate into football drills. Over the next fortnight our high performance and medical team will discuss the next phase of Toby’s rehabilitation and his return to play timeline,” Mackie said.

Cam Guthrie and Jack Martin both pulled up well after successful returns through the VFL last Friday, with both impressing in a half of gametime against Footscray.

Guthrie kicked a running goal and collected nine touches and Martin racked up 17 touches in a halfback role.

The injury-hit pair and Mitch Knevitt — who returned from a plantar fascia issue in the second half — are expected to increase their gametime in the reserves this week
