They were school mates, teammates and best mates.

And perhaps fittingly, Carey Grammar duo Matthew Rowell and Noah Anderson ended up being selected by Gold Coast Suns with picks one and two in the 2019 national draft and soon became housemates.

It is not every day that a school has two players taken in the same AFL draft, let alone with the first two picks.

However, the talented pair were long seen as two of the standouts in the draft class that year.

While injury has restricted Rowell over his first two seasons, the midfield bull burst onto the scene at the top level in 2020 and polled nine Brownlow Medal votes in the space of three games.

Anderson, the son of former Hawthorn and St Kilda forward Dean Anderson, played every game for the Suns in his debut season in 2020 and continues to develop as a player on a wing.

By the time their careers are finished, Rowell and Anderson could prove to be two of the best ever players to come out of Carey Grammar.

However, there are a list of others whose achievements at the top level still sit ahead of them for now.

At the top of that list is Hawthorn midfielder Tom Mitchell, who won the Brownlow Medal during a blistering 2018 season.

The ball-winning onballer is also a two-time Hawks best and fairest and a two-time All-Australian.

Mitchell finished his schooling in Western Australia, but had attended Carey Grammar for his first three years of secondary school.

Andrew Gaff missed West Coast’s 2018 premiership, but is a 200-game Eagles player, two-time All-Australian and club best and fairest winner.

Other Carey Grammar products over the past 50 years include Melbourne midfielder Jack Viney, Collingwood All-Australian defender Darcy Moore and Western Bulldogs 2016 premiership player and two-time All-Australian Jack Macrae.
