AFL trade news 2023: All the latest ahead of the exchange period

With the season officially done and dusted, trade talks are heating up. Get the latest news and whispers on Tom Doedee, Zac Fisher, Liam Henry, Ollie Wines, Dev Robertson and more.

St Kilda will attempt to lure Fremantle’s former top 10 pick Liam Henry with a future third-round pick as trade and free agency discussions ramp up post-grand final.

Henry is St Kilda-bound after choosing Ross Lyon’s side over Hawthorn, but the Saints are determined to retain their full 2023 draft hand to continue adding elite young talent.

The Dockers will ask for at least a future second-rounder for a player taken at pick 9 in the 2019 national draft.

But given he is their only departing player of any note, they can wait until deep into the trade period to attempt to secure a better selection than any early St Kilda offer.

St Kilda has picks 12, 32 and 51 but will be hopeful of at least an end-of-first-round compensation pick if Jade Gresham departs for the Dons.

Dev likely to stay in Brisbane

Brisbane is confident Dev Robertson will sign a new short-term deal after proving to the 22-year-old in a 16-game fourth season, it is prepared to hand him senior matches.

Robertson will sit down with his management this week after parking talks through the finals to concentrate on winning a premiership.

West Coast is a strong suitor for a developing talent who kicked a goal from 13 possessions in the grand final – so a player genuinely undecided about his future has the option of signing a one or two-year deal.

Will Ashcroft’s brother Levi, draft-eligible as a Brisbane father-son next year, had 26 possessions and a goal in another classy display in an under-17 futures game on grand final morning.

It is great news for the club, but another reminder to Robertson the Lions midfield will be hard to break into in coming seasons.

Blue’s trade request imminent

Carlton expects utility Zac Fisher to ask for a trade to North Melbourne this week, despite no formal request at last week’s exit interview.

Fisher had been keen to stay but has been made aware his chances will be limited at the Blues, so the 25-year-old is getting his head around a move to Arden Street.

Dylan Stephens is also expected to find his way to the Roos, who have been handed three extra end-of-first-round picks over the 2023 and 2024 national drafts.

A deal of four years, with a fifth-year trigger, would give Fisher financial security after being dropped multiple times by the Blues this season.

Carlton’s list spot crunch was shown last week when Lochie O’Brien was delisted, despite having a contract for 2024, which meant he was paid out by the Blues.

Doedee race heats up

Collingwood and Brisbane continue to push hard to secure the signature of Adelaide free agent Tom Doedee ahead of free agency opening on Friday.

The Lions are considered favourites but Nathan Murphy’s latest concussion in the grand final – with Jeremy Howe 33 – is another reminder to the Pies about their need for another key-position defender.

Clubs believe his asking price could be as high as five years at $600,000 a season.

Not a lot in Wines trade talk

Geelong is not expected to pursue Port Adelaide Brownlow Medallist Ollie Wines despite a report over the weekend from SA radio personality Stephen Rowe.

The Cats are open to offers for their top 10 pick but Wines, who has three more years remaining on a significant deal, is not believed to be a priority after a quiet season in which he was pushed out of the centre square.

Flynn set to cash in on ruck merry-go-round

West Coast leads the charge for GWS free agent Matt Flynn but the long list of clubs keen for ruck back-up puts him in a position of strength.

Clubs believe Todd Goldstein will land at Collingwood but Essendon, St Kilda, Geelong and Melbourne are all looking for back-up rucks.

Flynn had a strong start to the season until Kieren Briggs took over, with his free agency status hugely appealing to the Eagles.

They are keen to preserve their entire draft hand and have even threatened to drag Hawthorn small forward Tyler Brockman through the pre-season draft if the Hawks are unrealistic in their trade requests.
