AFL round 10: Sydney defeats Carlton by 16 points, full SuperCoach takeaways
Almost 1000 coaches who traded Adam Cerra were left smarting after he was Carlton’s clear standout in Friday’s loss to Sydney. See the full SuperCoach takeaways here.
Sydney’s topsy-turvy season reached a new high with a stunning fourth quarter seeing them run over the top of Carlton.
Horrendous and slippery conditions at ground level made for an ordinary spectacle with goals coming at a premium as neither team could get a run on.
That was until Brodie Grundy brought the house down, kicking on the run from 50m just 59 seconds into the final term to give the Swans their first lead since the first quarter.
From that point on they looked like the Swans of 2024, kicking five of the six goals in the final term.
Even when Charlie Curnow tried his best to inspire a fightback with his third goal of the match, Sydney hit straight back with interest to secure just their fourth win of the season with a morale-boosting 11.12 (78) to 9.8 (62) victory.
HERE WE GO AGAIN
A week after the Lachie Schultz concussion saga and the issue of when to stop play will again rear its head following another nasty incident.
Aaron Francis bore the brunt of a marking contest between teammate Brodie Grundy and Carlton’s Harry McKay, with friendly fire leaving Francis dazed on the ground in Sydney’s defensive 50.
The physio immediately rushed to his aid, where he received treatment for 90 seconds as he lay on the ground before play finally stopped once the Swans rushed through a behind after the ball had travelled up and down the field.
Unsurprisingly he failed his HIA, taking no further part in the contest at halftime with a concussion and subbed out for Oliver Florent.
BLUES SEE RED
ARC has the power to waste minutes looking at blurry images for goal attempts, but not be called upon when there is clear doubt in a goal-scoring opportunity.
As Heeney tried to kick infield, his attempt was blocked by the boot of Mitch McGovern and was ruled out on the full.
Replays showed it was a howler from the umpires, with the ball cannoning into the ground after McGovern contacted it.
The call stood and Heeney was given a tough attempt from the boundary line, which he slotted from the tight angle to further enrage Carlton fans.
SWANS IN TROUBLE
Justin McInerney will come under the microscope of the MRO after a bump gone wrong in the first quarter.
Jack Silvagni was in a vulnerable position when McInerney came steaming past, collecting him high.
He’s not the only one, with a careless bump from Joel Amartey collecting Jordan Boyd in the head in the final moments of play.
Boyd was forced from the field after wearing a shoulder to the face.
