The AFL world has been rocked by the sudden death of Adam Selwood at just 41 years old.
One of four brothers to play AFL football, Selwood played 187 games for West Coast after he was selected in the 2002 draft.
He played in the 2006 Eagles premiership side that beat Sydney in an all-time grand final classic.
His tragic death comes just months after his twin brother Troy Selwood died at 40 years old.
During a service at Geelong’s GMHBA Stadium in February, Adam led the tributes for his twin, who he described as “full of life, full of love, full of wisdom beyond his years”.
“Having an identical twin is a both a rare privilege and wonderfully complex,” he said.
“A twin is more than a sibling. They are a constant presence, a built-in mate.
“He was my mirror, my fiercest competitor, my greatest ally and the one person who knew what I was always thinking.”
He said writing Troy’s eulogy had been the “hardest thing” he had ever had to do, but reflecting on their life together had “brought moments of comfort and moment of joy”.
Adam made a post on his LinkedIn last month, calling for help fundraising for a charity “committed to educating, engaging, and empowering young people to become mental health leaders and help prevent youth suicide”.
“Following the heartbreaking loss of my twin brother to suicide, I have made the decision to take on the HBF Health Run for a Reason Half Marathon. My goal is to raise $10,000 in support of zero2hero,” he wrote.
“This cause is deeply personal to me, and this run marks an important step in my own healing journey, as well as an ongoing commitment to raising awareness about mental health and suicide prevention across the country.
“Your support would mean the world to me. Every donation, no matter the amount, makes a real and lasting difference in the lives of young Western Australians and is deeply appreciated by myself, my family, and the zero2hero community.”
He was due to run the half marathon next Sunday, having raised more than $21,000.
Born in Bendigo, Adam moved to Western Australia at the age of 18 after being drafted to the West Coast Eagles in the 2002 AFL draft.
After retiring in 2013, Selwood transitioned into the Eagles’ coaching ranks, where he guided the club’s midfield for four seasons.
From 2016, he was part of West Coast’s female football program, with the club fielding a team in the AFLW competition in 2020.
Scott Selwood was due to be at the MCG for Collingwood’s clash against Adelaide on Saturday as a senior assistant coach for Craig McRae’s side, but he has been granted personal leave.
Former West Coast coach Adam Simpson paid tribute as news broke on Saturday morning.
“I don’t know what to say. It was a pleasure to work with Adam briefly,” he said on SEN.
“It breaks your heart.”
