IT’S the eternal trade debate — what is Player X worth at the trade table?

With trade negotiations officially underway and a host of big names up for grabs over the next fortnight, list guru Gary Buckenara looks at the 10 names set to dominate headlines.

What should Essendon have to give up for Jake Stringer and should Melbourne really have to pay two first-round picks for Jake Lever?

GARY BUCKENARA: WHAT REALLY HAPPENS IN TRADE TALKS?

ADAM COONEY: THIS COULD BE MAKING OF STRINGER

JAKE LEVER (Adelaide)

What’s he worth? Pick No. 10 and a second-round pick or young player

Bucks says: Two first-round picks is overs, but Lever is one of the best intercept defenders in the game. He’s up there with Eagle Jeremy McGovern.

JACK WATTS (Melbourne)

What’s he worth? Second-round pick

Bucks says: Watts is yet to deliver on his potential and has never really dominated a season. He’s coming off a disappointing one and his consistency is questionable.

AARON FRANCIS (Essendon)

What’s he worth? Second-round pick

Bucks says: Francis is yet to prove himself at AFL level despite being taken with pick No. 6 in the 2015 draft. His work ethic was always the knock on him and it remains the query.

JAKE STRINGER (Western Bulldogs)

What’s he worth? Top-10 pick

Bucks says: Despite his off-field issues, a player of Stringer’s calibre demands a high price. Has X-factor, is dynamic and an All-Australian and premiership player at 23. Players of Stringer’s ilk don’t come along very often.

JARMAN IMPEY (Port Adelaide)

What’s he worth? Late second or third-round pick

Bucks says: He was in and out of Port’s side this year but offers pace and can go into the midfield. He’s a C-grade player.

Hawthorn and the Western Bulldogs are interested in Jarman Impey.

ANDREW GAFF (West Coast)

What’s he worth? Top-15 pick

Bucks says: Good player who runs all day and racks up the disposals. One of the Eagles’ best.

CHARLIE CAMERON (Adelaide)

What’s he worth? Top-20 pick

Bucks says: Elite small forward with pace and exactly what Brisbane Lions need.

ADAM TOMLINSON (GWS Giants)

What’s he worth? Pick between 15-25

Bucks says: Not a true key-position player but has big upside. He has a big engine, uses the ball OK and his best footy is ahead of him.

JOSH SCHACHE (Brisbane Lions)

What’s he worth? First-round pick plus a second-round pick or a player

Bucks says: Brisbane would demand two first-round picks as he was pick No. 2 and key forwards are so hard to find. Still believe he will be a very good player despite his early-career troubles.

BRYCE GIBBS (Carlton)

What’s he worth? First-round pick

Bucks says: Very good player and coming off one of his best seasons, but he’ll be 29 in March and has limited time left in the game. A pick anywhere in the first round is fair.

Bryce Gibbs is still a contracted player at Carlton.
