AS talented as the Gold Coast Suns and GWS line-ups might be — despite their respective ladder positions — one can‘t help but wonder … ‘what if?’
This weekend the Giants, 11th on the AFL ladder after a stunning form reversal in Adelaide last week, host the 15th-placed Suns coming off arguably their most disappointing effort of the year.
It’s a far cry from the ‘dynasty’ talk many AFL fans were sprouting about both clubs not too long ago.
SUPERCOACH: JUMP THE LADDER DURING THE BYES
These are teams that were given unprecedented draft concessions as the League tried to ensure their expansion franchises took the fast track to competitive football.
Sadly, many of the players selected with those generous concessions are now wearing different jumpers.
A look through a list of the two teams and the players that have departed reveals more than its share of talent.
The two clubs aren’t alone when it comes to trading away talent.
But whether their departures have been a result of the ‘go-home factor’, their club moving them on for list-build reasons, players not living up to expectation, lucrative offers from rivals or other unforeseen reasons, the two clubs have farewelled plenty.
As they meet this weekend, we take a look at the men who could very well have been in action at Spotless Stadium on Saturday afternoon, but for whatever reason will be in a different jumper.
Who’d win this clash? We reckon the former Giants have the Suns covered for depth, but the Queenslanders’ midfield sure would make it interesting.
